Ok so for my project design class we need to do market research.

Basically, would you guys (who are avid bicyclists/ or not) purchase or be interested in an ABS system for bicycles? The ABS thing would either be put on new bicycles released into the market or also be available as an upgrade on existing bikes.

Thats all I got. Its kind of a lame project but it has to be a "group" decision, so I'm stuck with it.

My bike already has abs, my feet! No I wouldnt by it. The brakes on mt. bikes are fine as they are, plus leaving 10ft skid marks are all part of the fun.

i'm about as interested in ABS for my bike as i am for my car... not in the least :D

i really don't see the benefit, it would just be more moving parts, and it'd keep you from being able to slide to a stop when you really need to. that'd be a great way to fly off a mountain trail. maybe there'd be more of a road bike application, though...

I don't even like ABS on cars.

I ride my bike everyday.

I wouldn't buy it.

I think it'd be nice on mt. bikes since it's pretty hard to maintain balance with your wheel locked up going down a sketchy face with nowhere to drag your feet and unable to turn. Plus, you got that tree you don't want to wrap your body around. For a street application though, not so much though.

I'm just in the group. I think the idea is fucking dumb too.

*sigh* oh well.. stupid majority vote

sounds like an interesting concept, but the hardware/mechanisms required would end up weighing around half as much as the bike itself.

That said, it'd probably be best suited for mountain bikes, and as far as I'm concerned, it's not something I'd ever need.

i think the opposite would be true. on loose surfaces, locking up the brake allows you to stop faster. on hard surfaces abs is equal or better. on a mountain bike, you can still maintain control with the wheels locked. on a hard surface on a road bike, not so much.

no serious cyclist would ever use it though. it would add some pretty serious weight, like 10-20%. try telling as miata racer you're going to add 500 lbs to his car.

FYI - it's already been invented.

http://www.budbrake.com/faqs.html (ABS for bicycles)

Personally, I've never needed this. Going 60mph on ultrathin tires? Rear wheel skids don't really upset the balance that much. You can come to a hotdogging skidding stop while standing up or sitting down, or let off a little and save your tires.

Learn to keep control in a skid, it's not that hard and you can make it look really cool.

Yeah bikers are more worried about the weight of their bikes rather than adding something that they really wouldnt need.

This shit isn't for me. I don't even OWN a bicycle. I'm just in a group with a bunch of douche bags that think ABS on a bicycle is a good idea.

Even the teacher thought it was ok.. fuck.

Well you just conducted your market research evan, there isn't a market for it. I think the only people that would consider it are geriatric types. And cost is usually prohibitive for them. So unless you could make it for Walmart type budgets, I dont know if its feasible.

Well owning a mountain bike and being a bike rider, I laugh at the concept of an ABS system on a bike.
First off we get obsessed about excess weight. You guys trying to get the weight on your car down that don't ride bikes have no idea. We buy Titanium parts for our bikes for exhorbitant prices for the sake of weight reduction.
Second off Bikes really do not carry enough mass to warrant a ABS system in my opinion. We already have disc brakes and they fucking rock.
ABS systems where designed for the sake of the driver who has improper brake pedal control i.e. instead of modulating your pedal with your foot you just step on it hard. Most bike riders modulate there brakes with their hand automatically its something you learn when your a kid. In fact its pretty fundamental in getting the bike to stop quickly. ABS to take care of that for you? Somebody sounds like they want a job with D.O.T. or the N.H.T.A.

you should tell the leader of the group that you'll design the "abs" and just invent somethign where a rod get thrown into the spoke of the bike and tell them.. it just as effective.

opinion - abs on a bike .. cost/benefit, weight/benefit, no good. They dont even have them on motorcycles.

NemeGuero

Yes they do. BMW motorcycles have them all day long.

It's an option on 08 model Harley touring bikes, and standard on most Harley police bikes for the last 2 years or so.

Quiet you.

I see from the signature located at the bottom of your post that you have at least three highly polluting, environmental devastating "cars" powered by a highly inefficient internal combustion engine.

Shame on you. SHAME ON YOU!

How dare you kill the earth like that. HOW DARE YOU?

i do road races from time to time and I also did the bogus basin hill climb in idaho. but on all occasions I have had no trouble with my brake setup. I would try it but probably not buy it
