View Full Version : My Letter to Super Street

This letter is in regards to the article in the October 2002 issue of Super Street entitled: Obsessive / Compulsive.
What would Freud say about this? I think he would begin to question Mr. Lieberman's sexuality.
Now I am not speaking on behalf of all Nissan enthusiasts, but myself being a Nissan enthusiast with very strong opinons, I feel that Craig Liebermans abomination of the Blackbird R34 GT-R is a disgrace to the GT-R badge.
Allow me to explain. The Blackbird which was built by Motorex was meant to be a special car. It was a supercar among supercars. Not something to be fooled around with. For one thing, Motorex put their own time, effort, and money into this car to give it it's own identity as the Blackbird. I find it hard to believe that the guys at Motorex intended for this car to be purchased only for the new owner to completely disregard all of Motorex's tuning abilities and completely change the whole essence of the vehicle. I would like to believe that Motorex created this car with its own menacing look and deep black paint scheme to be a monster from the moment of purchase and to remain in that state. But for some strange reason, Mr. Lieberman felt that it was his duty to take all of Motorex's efforts and flush them down the toilet and create the king of all rice rockets.
It was called "Blackbird" for a reason. Partly in reference to the SR71 Blackbird spy plane, known for its speed and menacing nature; and partly for the black paint scheme to match the already menacing look of the R34 GT-R V-spec. Why, then, did Mr. Lieberman take it upon himself to paint this car blue and add an array of stickers to degrade it's outward appearance? I mean come on, APC? NOPI? Moviecarz.com? Meguiar's? What's up with that? Since when does Meguiar's make parts for the Skyline? What the hell is going through your mind when placing these stickers on a car that commands such respect and prestige? I don't even think I want to know...
Oh and what's with the wanna-be Signal Auto stripe sticker across the sides of the car? If I was from Signal, I would be embarassed that anything that nearly resembled the sticker from my shop was to appear on the outside of this car. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do recall the stock V-spec front end looking much better than the kit that was thrown on this car. It is completely unnecessary, but then again, that is the essence of "rice", isn't it?
OK kids, heres a question for you: How many bottles of nitrous oxide does it take to make a Skyline GT-R fast? Does anyone know? Well, for those who are clueless, the answer is NONE. I don't know about you, but I think that the addition of 3 or 4 or however many bottles that Craig threw in there is a slap in the face to the RB26DETT's ability to create it's own power. As you may have already seen, people who know what the hell they are doing have been able to get over 900 horsepower from this engine fairly consistently without the use of nitrous. And what's with the K&N intake? I hope that was given to Mr. Lieberman for free, because everyone knows (or should know) that Apexi is the best you can get for your Nissan. Hey, is that a Veilside shift knob? Of all of the parts that Veilside makes, you chose to just use the shift knob? Oh wait, nevermind, he also has a Veilside oil filler cap so the poor shift knob doesn't feel so alone. How much horsepower does that cap give you, by the way? It's shaped like a turbo! I'm guessing +20 at all four wheels! When I saw the words Project Mu in the Fast Facts area, I thought to myself, "at least he did one thing right,". Boy was I ever wrong. Rather than going for a Project Mu brake kit, Mr. Lieberman opted to get "Project Mu simulated racing calipers for foot pedals,". Pardon me? I then proceeded to lose all hope for this car...
Looking at the props section, I couldn't help but notice the names APC, Meguiar's, and Edelbrock pop up. All very well respected parts makers for the Skyline GT-R, right? No, that's just me being sarcastic. Good thing there are no shots of the rear of the car, because if I would have seen a set of APC "altezza" lights in back, this letter would have been obscene enough to make baby Jesus cry. I mean, he could have at least used an APC shift knob in place of the Veilside unit; then his APC sticker would actually mean something. Either way, it's bad.
In conclusion, I find it sad that this car will be many people's representation of the Skyline GT-R due to it's starring role in the future sequel to The Fast and the Furious. Well kids, there is only one word that can describe this car. It's a three letter word that begins with G and ends with Y; and no its not gey, giy, goy, or guy. Mr. Lieberman, you have just been owned.
-Mike

if it was any skyline it wouldnt be such a big deal to me, but he took the Motorex Blackbird, which was something Motorex took their own time to build, and turned it into crap. he could have used any other skyline but he chose to do it to the blackbird, i think thats wrong...

I agree to an extent w/ GotDrift. Just get a random Skyline and do you rice not the Blackbird. It used to be the car of my dreams But also the car was purpose built, for a sheity movie, but purpose built none the less. So yes the car looks like crap and my first reaction when I learned that it was the blackbird I almost wept. Just imagine if they took your sister and dressed her up like a whore....that is the feeling that I got when I saw that SS article. Pretty sad that someone thinks that car is cool

Its not the only skyline on the planet let alone in that addition of SS. There are two other skylines that are very nice in the following articals. Take the stickers off that car and it would a very nice car, but you dont see anyone taking the wings off the batmobile do you? NO! Cause its a movie car... thats right, its soon to be a movie star.
Its not like he took the car from the goofs in cali and detuned it... Based off the artical he did take a engine producing a huge amount of horsepower to an even higher output(not always good though).
I look at the owner and I dont see a car enthusiest.. I see a guy with a lot of money that likes to show off to everyone around him and now as a "in" for movies.
Anyone newbie to the skyline is going to read that artical and either look up other skylines and see what they are all about( a tool to loose your license) or not like it at all and go back to there honda.

Eh fuck super street. Actually almost all the magazines for compact sports cars are pretty lame. Granted Sport Compact Car is pretty respectable, but the rest are just ughh. I've appropriately (sp) turned my life to car books. They seem to actually be worth my reading time and help me understand concepts of how things in or on a car work... as aposed to how to see some fucking altezza's be installed on a civic. Or how cool it is to put S15 headlights on civic's, MR2's, Accord's, Integra's, and whatever other cars I've seen them on (didnt list nissan's because that doesnt bother me AS much). Well Im done ranting, Id rather be reading anyways...

to start off...i agree with where you were going, but...
correct me if im wrong, but the kit on the car is the one the blackbird was built with
as far as respect for liberman....go to FA and look in the skyline section....a majority of the comments are in regards to the loss of respect for him
APC....umm....perhaps you didnt read correctly....APC.....he turned the car into a whore...a billboard/whore
whoever bad we feel it may be, the car was made for a purpose...a movie, and well even as entheusists it cought our eye....you bought the super street, you read the article.....typical guy who likes cars and watches movies is similar...when the ads come out guess whats gunna be all over em....and because they dont know any better they will think its awesome(which technically it is) they dont care about its sponsors, they see a cool car....hollywood sees money
a thing to note....since F&F the s2k has been through numerous paint changes....all i can hope is that after the movie the infamous blackbird will be restored to its origional visual state(i think the added power can stay )

GotDrift. I totally agree with you.
From growing up and living in Japan for the past 18 years, I've wittnessed the rebirth of the GT-R with the R32 and have followed the GT-R closely to this day. The GT-R is a representative, a model of excellence. An Image that the car enthusiast community has set by there own preceptions, thoughts and taste. It is also a car that, since was only sold in Japan, in a way carries a Japanese character and will hold to it no matter what country it is in. The GT-R is an expression of pure Japanese motorsports.
To see Mr. Lieberman's car equipped with NOS was utterly disgusting to me. When I think of NOS, the first thing that comes to my mind is "American". I too am an American and don't have anything against the US, but to see a GT-R raped by NOS makes me cringe. My opinion might be biased but I see NOS as "fake" or artificial power. The easy way to get power compared to turbo-charging. Then to see a GT-R clothed in all those "American" decals makes me feel even worse. Mr. Lieberman defaced the GT-R's name and image. To an extent, it is like putting stares and stripes onto the Japanese flag. It just wouldn't be right.
Try imagining this the other way around. What if a Japanese person bought a Corvette, a symbol of American ingenuity and automotive power to many people, and brought it to Japan. He then decides to put some Watanabe rims on it. Then goes and throws all these Japanese products into it. Say he goes with an Apex'i turbine and intercooler, has GP Sports fabricate a body kit for it, and to top it off, also has piping fabricated so that it comes out looking like a straight-through muffler. On the outside we can still throw on some stickers and decals, say like the blitz stripe the goes across the length of the car. Oh, and for the paint, let's paint it white, just like 70% of the cars in Japan.
I am sure almost all Corvette enthusiast and many ol' Joe's that just like cars would not take to liking this car too well or the person who did that either. They might even feel offended.
This is what happended with the car we speak of in this thread. It is a sad story and I hope it doesn't happen to any other great cars, no matter where they are.

That would be sweet...I can see it now...Jun Hyperlemon Corvette..lol. You know what though? There are domestic companies that add forced induction to the corvette--although they wouldn't use the JDM turbo goodies. Also there are domestic companies that make body kits for the corvette--that's just a given. But I don't think any respectable domestic tuners add stickers to their cars for parts companies that deserve no respect (read: APC). Also they don't do shit like add a non-functional speed filling gas slot to the trunk. Craig Lieberman deserves no respect for what he's done to the R34. Even if a respectable Japanese tuning company did an all out corvette with a big ass blitz sticker on the side, at least the corvette would be using a blitz boost controller...or blitz exhaust...or something that had function.
Craig Lieberman--if you're reading this, my message to you is buy A CIVIC...or a FOCUS...the R34 (or any Nissan for that matter) doesn't deserve to be degraded with big ass NOS tanks, APC products, and other garbage. Go sell out to the crap companies with a different car--you're not welcome in the Nissan camp.

Heh, cool they actually typed it there. The only thing i think they are actually laughing at you in the reply. Something to the lines of "Who the fuck cares what some kid from cali says, when APC will give a shit load of money if there is their sticked on the main car?". Honestly though, performance and business are different things. Performance - is to make you car perform better. Business - to make money of selling "performance" parts to the people. When people don't know better they start buying crap like what APC is selling. And movies like F&F just make the number of those people bigger. It's all about advertisement. And what's a better advertisemsnt than 2 hours of showing your product and telling everyone how cool it is? And none of us have the money/power to change it. So just accept it the way it is. Hope the trend will die away some day.

I didn't read you post first time. But now that i did, i have a couple of things to add. NOS, or the actual term NITROUS, is used by most of hotrodders, not because it's a way to add cheap power, but because it's needed to avoid all the fucking lag their t-100s give em. Therefore i see nothing wrong with nitrous and the skyline in real life (think of using nitrous not after the turbo but before). It's is a cheating though when used on a n/a 120hp car.
As for the corvette with an apexi intercooler - that would be a skyline with 405/15/whatever wheels. That would be american. They didn't do nothing like that. APC is an american company but it makes crappy parts for japanese cars. And what other cars have (note have, not use) nitrous more often than our beloved hondas? So the whole americanizing of the skyline is i think bs. They did to it the same thing everyone here does to their hondas. So it's as "JDM" as it gets

Huh? What are "405/15/whatever wheels"? Please clarify. If your trying to say wide tread tires, I don't think any GT-R has wheels that wide, it wouldn't fit unless it is a GT-R specifically custom made for the track.

Quote

So the whole americanizing of the skyline is i think bs. Civics, NSX's, Integra's, Accords, any of these Hondas are sold in the US and Japan. Yes, the Manufacturer is Japanese based, but thats as far as it goes. When you speak of GT-R's, you think "are only sold in japan". Thats where it carries it heritage. When you think Ferrari, you think "Italian thorough bred"(yes, i know it's sold in the states). Its just a fact. When you say civic, the common thought amongst many people is "rice". I hate using that term but it's true. The above mentioned Honda's are American. When they were being built, the designers were probably thinking of a layout that suits Americans more as they are the primary consumers.
And whats with "JDM"? Thats a term people like you, in the states have used to label things. I am not trying to label the GT-R as purely "JDM" if thats what you think. Its the image, character, and heritage that the GT-R carries, that was polluted. I'm sure if you ask, many car enthusiasts in Japan would have the same sentiments. My opinions may be a bit biased as I've stated before, but no one has yet shown me why I should think otherwise.

The jdm refrain was a sarcastic one. that's why i put it in "". What i meant to say is that it looks just like yer average honda that got the ever so pupular jdm image. I hate the jdm image. It's gay and i don't understand why people would spend money to make their car look jdm, even though noone in japan does what is considered jdm in the US
As for the GTR, last time i checked, motorex was selling the gtr for quite an amount of money. But they are selling them. So it's not only Japanese anymore. You can have a gtr in us if you got the money. It's just that your american joe has no clue what that car is, and people like us won't ever have money. And when we will, will buy something that is cheaper and performs better (i mean for 80K you can get a very nice brand new sports car). The gtr is being sold in this country, and people that live here do what they want with it. And if a bench wing is considered popular IN THE COUNTRY THEY ARE IN, they will do it (if they care) and you won't be able to stop them. And arguing is it JDM or not after that would be too late.
As for the wheels, i meant 40.5" wide tires mounted on 15" rims. The big ass american drag racing wheels.
Turbo and nitrous would both lead to the same results at the top end. Nitrous is forcing air in, and so does turbo. The rest depends on how big of a turbo/nitrous bottle you got, and how bullet proofed yer engine is. But unlike turbo, nitrous will give you boost whenever you want it and at whatever rpm. Not something that you can do with a huge ass turbo. But nitrous is more expensive though.

I think I'm on the same page with you on this part. I can understand if your from Japan and owned a car their. And when you come here you want to make your like your old car just because you liked it that way and thats what your interpreation of the car is. However, doing the whole "JDM" badges and stuff like that just because it is the popular thing to do is different. I see it as a trendy thing and that people do because they don't know what they want and find confort in something that is easily acceptable by people. Just following the crowd or hopping on the bandwagon but don't know why.

Yes. I know this. I should've stated this in my last reply. That is besides the point because what I mean is that it was a car built for Japan. You cannot make it left-hand drive. Take Kimonos for example. Kimonos are designed artfully and beautifully just as they have been for years in Japan. They have been shaped by cultural influences and Japanese taste. Yes, you can get them here too but if you cut it so that it exposes cleavage, add slits up the side to your upper thigh, and make it a ty-dye color, people who enjoy kimonos and understand them (I'm not trying to say I'm the GT-R guru here), will be taken back by it. That isn't what the norm is; and yes, there will always be those other few people who might like it. There are those little exception that people bring up to try and argue a point.
That is why I'm upset though. From where I'm coming, I just don't see why someone would do that. It makes me sick. But there will always be people with money that can do what they want. I'm not telling Mr. Lieberman to un-"NOS" his car and take the stickers off or anything because he can do what he wants. I'm just voicing my thoughts about his car. Mr. Lieberman can enjoy his cut up, ty-dyed GT-R.

Well, as i was saying nitrous in real life will belong on any car that is seriously into performance. But in the F&F movie, they will never use it. To add to that, half the cars in the first movie had like fake turbos. It's all about advertisment. And their goal is to make alot of money by spending as little as possible.
The F&F movie isn't targeted towards the people in japan. It's targeted towards people here who think park benches look cool, and the nos sticker gives you insane amount of hp. That's why they make hte GTR look that way in the movie. If you think about it, there is no way you are gonna portray how fast the car is in a movie. Even if it's really slow, using graphics u can make it run 12s. The performance only matters on the street, in real life. The best thing to portray in movies though is how "beautiful" (again with sarcasm) a car is cuz u can see that, and that's what will bring them money. And they could care less about what we (performance people) think/feel.
But yeah, i hate what they did myself. I just know i can't do anything about it, except getting the ripped version of the movie instead of going to the theater, so they won' be making money off of me

Yeah, I understand. But from being a fan of the GT-R for so many years, it is sad to see something like that done. I know that they are trying to sell the movie but it hurts to see GT-R dressed up for that movie. I'm sure if they had a Ferarri in the movie like the other cars, a Ferarri lover would not like it.
Hehe, as for the "park bench" wing, hehe, those are actually good. They were a great idea. Many people use them in Japan. I also wanted to put one on my 240 when I got here but after talking with people, the general concensus seems to be that they are "rice". Its sad to see such a great application destroyed by people who just want to use them to look cool. After hearing this and seeing so many Honda's with them, it changed my mine. Its sad because I really want to get one but they have been labeled as "rice" because of the many people who just want to make they're car look fast. If I moved back to Japan, where they are accepted, I know I'll get one .

Well, i got nothing against them. I mean they actually look cool on some of the cars. I'm pretty sure the C-West's carbon fiber wing that costs $1900 is as much performance as there can be, but seeing an $80 Bomz wing that's 1.5 wider than the car itself on a fwd civic... it can't get any worse than that.
