hi
i have a s13 w/ sr20 swap in California
i got a ticket for modified exhaust the other day, so i had to take the car to the state noise referee to check up the noise level....
i put back the stock exhaust......but the only problem is.....i have a SR20....they told me i would have to swap back to the stock motor and go back to recheck again....that is the only way i can do it......

does anyone here has the same experience? what did you guys do? anyone can give me some information on how to PASS it without swap back my stock motor?
can i just pay off the ticket without doing the correction on the ticket?
anyone knows any place can pass me on this?? PM me or email me at [email protected]

i need the information now......i only have less than a month before the court day......i need to know what i can do...if only swap back to the motor...i need to start it now to make it on time for my court day.......

please help me on this........HELP HELP

wait... be more specific, who told you that you need to swap back to a stock motor for them to check the noise? If it was the station that told you, I'd try my luck at another station... otherwise, just pay the fine for whatever it is.

My buddy has a ticket for modified exhaust, but the station never checked under his hood... they just did a quick sound check, and wrote him off, and that was that.

what is the violation code. If its just for sound then they have no business looking at your engine. As long as it passes 95 + or - 1.5 DB then you pass.

Just pay the fine. Done and done.

i'll check the violation code later tonight and post it up.....but the guy from the noise referee told me to swap back the motor and go back for recheck.. the first thing they did was pop my hood and say...."i don't think this car comes with this motor" they did not even run the test for the noise level......i went to the one in fullerton.....which one did you friend went to......please let me know....

so i can just pay off the ticket without passing the test right? just wanna to make sure.....

Vision Garage

yes you can just pay off the ticket which means you say Im guilty and I dont want to fix the problem. Ticket is around 475 from what i remember. From that point you are good to go until your next smog for your stickers.

djl601
09-20-2007, 12:57 PM
that's coo....maybe i should do that....should i try another referee station to see if i have any luck on passing it? or don't waste my time and pay it now....
what do you guys think?

Dude, $475 or a short drive to another station. It's worth at least goin to one more station. Or if you just have $500 you don't want, throw it away I guess.

djl601
09-20-2007, 02:46 PM
of course i don't wanna to pay for the ticket, that's the last option i have if really can't pass.....before i make another appointment with another location....i want to know ....they can't give me more tickets for having a SR20 at the referee station right? i don't want to go to another station, and they impound my car or give me more tickets........

which station do you guys have experienced with in socal? i need more information on the office locations......
thanks for all the help......

you don't have to go to a noise referee , just go to any SHERIFF station, give them your ticket, show them you changed your exhaust, pay $5, and be on your way... You don't have to go to some noise/smog ref. And especially don't go to a chp station...

You only need to pop your hood if your ticket has a modified emissions sticker. If not just tell them that you need to have your exhaust checked for a decibel reading. You can refuse to pop your hood since the ticket is only for exhaust. As for no plate, just pop the plate on, take it to your local pd. Go talk to the officer lady who is the secretary and she will go out, take a quick look and sign off your ticket.

I don't think they even popped my hood when they got me for modified exhaust.

It is odd no one, has yet to ask, him....What exhaust did you have on the car when you got the ticket?

Some aftermarket exhaust systems are street legal in California.

dude i got a "modified exhaust" ticket like 6 months ago... i put the stock exhaust back on and went to court... the judge just asked me if i fix the exhaust i said "yes" and my case was dismissed... my buddy had the same thing happen to him... but the judge asked a sheriff to check it out in the parking lot ... the sheriff just looked at it... ask him to turn it on... and sheriff just told the judge that it was fixed and the judge just charged him 10 bucks for court fees.... i would do that.. its a modified exhaust ticket not a "modified motor ticket... they have no business under your hood.... i hope everything works out for you!!

chester_ff7
09-21-2007, 08:32 AM
oh and the ticket that i had was for $680... just for the exhaust.... i wouldnt wanna pay that... and if the judge trips and makes you pay for it... ask for an extension, or payments.... heck dont pay! do community service!!

Is it marked correctable ? 27151 a or b ?

27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.
Amended Sec. 10, Ch. 92, Stats. 2001. Effective January 1, 2002.

27150. (a) Every motor vehicle subject to registration shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise, and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device.

(b) Except as provided in Division 16.5 (commencing with Section 38000) with respect to off-highway motor vehicles subject to identification, every passenger vehicle operated off the highways shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained so as to meet the requirements of Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200), and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device.

(c) The provisions of subdivision (b) shall not be applicable to passenger vehicles being operated off the highways in an organized racing or competitive event conducted under the auspices of a recognized sanctioning body or by permit issued by the local governmental authority having jurisdiction.

I got a ticket in irvine for this same reason. Put the stock exhaust on, took it to the local UCSB PD. Had some guy come out and i revved the engine so he can hear the exhaust. Got it signed off. Took it to Irvine PD and they told me I'd have to take it to court. Took it to preliminary court where you can plead guilty or non guilty. I told the judge the ticket was marked correctable and I had it signed off by an officer at UCSB PD because thats where i went to school. Judge threw it out and i didn't even have to pay a court fee.

One time i was sent to a ref for modified emissions and modified exhaust. The checked the engine because of the emissions part but the exhaust they just put the sound metere up to it . I did a 94.5 had it signed off took it to court had it thrown out of court but had to pay a 20 dollar court fee, done.

Another friend got sent to ref for exhaust. Took it to a ref in LA. Only checked the decible reading. Done and done.

sounds like everyone had pretty good experience with the exhaust ticket.....but i don't know why the ref i went to give me so much trouble....i went to the one in fullerton college......if any one need to go....don't go there....

so which ref was that in LA?? do you have the location of it? so i can make an appointment for there.....

thanks

If the police sent you to the State ref they should have provided you with a 1800 number sticker on the back of your ticket. If they didn't i don't think you have to go to a ref. You can just go to any CHP. Just tell them you put your stock exhasut on and rev it .

djl601
09-21-2007, 01:13 PM
i did went to a chp at first.....they give me the 1800 number and told me to go state ref for check up......that's why i end up going to the ref in fullerton.....sucks....don't even go there....
i'll make an appointment to another ref location, and go to court to check how much that ticket really is.......I hope it's 133 like what WERDdabuilder (http://www.zilvia.net/f/member.php?u=30913) paid.....not 400 or even 600 as mentioned above.....

i'll update again once i have find out all the info....
thanks for all the help and reply......

wow. I still can't believe CA puts so much effort into petty bullshit like exhaust mods and engine swaps.

Vision Garage

wait for at first it was just a modified exhaust ticket. Then when you went to the CHP they turned it into a state ref only ticket? They like put the sticker on the back of your ticket?

wow. I still can't believe CA puts so much effort into petty bullshit like exhaust mods and engine swaps.

haha, correct me if im wrong...but indiana doesnt even have inspections...just registrations.

ny isnt so nice...no matter what the decible limit...if its aftermarket, its illegal. i even checked up on the state law after asking a cop about it. anything that makes it louder from when it left the production line, is deemed illegal here.

Still havent gotten a ticket for my N1, but have def. been hassled about it more times than i have fingers and toes. (7 if you count the thumb, jp.)

I work at a parts store, and get a pretty decent discount on parts. Also, i work at a garage part time, so i was thinking on buying a stock catback for the ka (im sr'd) and everytime i get a ticket for the exhaust..just throw the car on the lift, and change the exhaust real quick (if you show you got it fixed within 24 hours of getting the ticket, they dismiss the ticket on the spot. you just have to go to the police station and show them you got it fixed.) What do you guys think about this idea? i could prob get the exhaust for 100 bucks...and i'd be used many times over...but i dunno...any thoughts?

For everyone telling him to just get it written off at the CHP office. As of July 2007, CHP doesnt write off modified exhaust tickets. They will tell you to call this 1.800 number and make an appointment so they can run the noise dosimeter test.

you dont even have to go to court. its just a easy fix-it ticket. im sure its "correctable". so that means either you can pay it correct(usually 10$ or so) or uncorrected like other fix-it tickets. you should have gotten a letter from the court saying how much it is if you paid the ticket correct or uncorrected. if you didn't, call the courts and ask them how much it is. trust...it will not be like 400$

edit: code: 27151(a)cvc modified exhaust, same violation i got. just follow what i did and you'll be good.

Vision Garage
09-21-2007, 10:51 PM
Yea CHP doesnt do anything like that anymore. They dont even like to write off plate tickets. Im just asking the OP if the CHP gave him the state ref sticker that says no officer signoff. the one for emissions testing.

Yeah, cali sux now if you get caught with SR. Its basically a huge fine, mine was $201 for modified emissions and $123 for modified exhaust. =/

anytime you get a ticket for exhaust, or smog, you MUST see a state ref, CHP doesn't sign.

YOU GUYS ARE ALL IDIOTS.... DO NOT TAKE A FIX IT TICKET TO A CHP STATION!!! AND ESPECIALLY NOT A REF UNLESS IT IS SPECIFICALLY STATED ON THE TICKET!!! Take the ticket to any local SHERIFF or POLICE department and have them sign the ticket off. The ticket also has a court date on it and a fine, BUT you don't have to do either if you get the ticket signed off before... And if for some off chance that station doesn't want to sign it off for you, just go to another place to get it signed off...

You don't even need to swap back your factory exhaust... all you need to do is pop in a silencer...

Ex 1: 1 month ago my sis in her wrx with hks hi-power exhaust got the same modified exhaust ticket in irvine. She put in the silencer went to an irvine pd station and got the ticket signed off and paid $5.

Ex 2: 1 year ago my cuz in her prelude with tanabe exhaust received same ticket. Put in the silencer, went to the eagle rock station and got it signed off...

Etc...

hmm i just got a ticket yesterday for noise violation..... my apex with rb20 is 2 times quieter then with the stock exhaust. but anyway i didnt get any sticker with a 1800 number. this ticket was in sherman oaks.

it just says to appear in court. do i just go to any local police station and have it checked?

SimpleSexy180

either irvine has not got the memo yet, but any exhaust tickets are handled by the state referee.

i got two tickets in june, one for modified and another for excessive noise (exhaust system not maintained, whatever) i went to my local police station and they slapped a referee sticker on the back of the ticket.

I made an appointment and for some reason they did pop my hood and check my oil? Although i didnt care because im KA.

anyway,

1. state referee does not dyno the car, they use a db reader and just rev your car to 4k. 95dbA (+/- 1.5dbA) to pass

2. apparently they do pop your hood and check your oil and shitt, which i dont get.

3. the fine is not that expensive. I think mine was like 160-90 uncorrected. This is in the Inland Empire Riverside area.

Just go to the noise shop and tell them to put in on the machine they have no business telling you what to do with your motor. They are supposed to check the noise level not tell you what motor should be in there. I'd take a ride to the next shop and tell them to check the noise level and do nothing else dont open my hood or tell me anything else besides what noise level my exhaust is making.

I have gotten the regular exhaust ticket sent to the LA ref, and then after that i got the ref ticket when he popped my hood and took pics and gave me a modified emission system ticket,

you can pay, even if it says mandatory court appearance,
just call the number on the back of the ticket,
hear your options, and request an extension, if you need to save up the money(if its a big ticket) my first one was under 200..the bigger(mod emissions) ref ticket was around 600,
ALWAYS PROCESS YOUR TICKET OVER THE PHONE!!!
its much esier, just pay it before the due date and thats it!!
oh i forgot to say i have an sr too..so you should be fine.
