rebuilding an sr

ok, here's the problem. I have a sr20det that was smoking heavily. did a compression test and #3 cylinder had no compression. pulled the spark plugs and #3 was covered in oil. I think its the piston ring? I haven't had time to fix it so its been sitting about half a year, but now i've been thinking about fixing it myself. what would be involved in replacing the piston rings?

Disassembling the motor, buying new rings and putting it back together.
Your question is too broad.
Get your hands on the FSM and read up on the dissambling of the motor. Also plenty of SR build threads around.
Suggestion would be to find someone with experience to help you out or in the very least supervise your job.

best thing to do is like what ManoNegra get a fsm and read up just like i did and search everyones sr build thread for tips and other useful information. you must be pretty busy for it to be just sitting there for a half a year!

A lot more work then you are thinking. Even with the FSM you will definately need an experienced engine builder to help you out. Some things are just not said in the manual. Hope you have good tools as well.

whenever rings are replaced, the bores MUST also be honed. You could reuse the old bearings but youre already in there. I f you had no issues with the bearings previously and you see no signs of wear you can most likely get away with ordering the factory sizes based on the corresponding #'s you get off the crank and block. You will also require an engine gasket set and it's critical to machine the head for a good seal. As long as you find nothing else wrong or are willing to replace, your looking at around around 700, dont forget new fluids and filters!
