View Full Version : My tires are getting pretty bad, what should I get for 400
I am gona have to delay my suspension another couple months to buy new tires soon. What can I get for just every day driving that will work well in rain and dry (don't care about snow), will last a good while, and will be OK for agressive cornering...IE: autox should I be able to do it this comming season. I don't want super soft tires cauz I'll wear them out too fast, but I want something that will perform well...just good all around tires for my stock 16" rims for say 70-100 a peice.

I have no complaints with my Kuhmo 712's. They're holding up rather well through several autoX's, a full day open track event, and daily driving...all with a little extra camber. The insides are starting to wear pretty good now, though...but a cure is only an alignment away.

kumho cheap and best for the money other than that the yoko A520's are the 2nd best they have much more grip but you also are gonna pay a lil extra for that grip.
hmm yoko's in the front and kumho's in the rear = fun corners!

Dunlop SP Sport W-10's. Best gripping tires for the money and awesome tread pattern design.

How does the treadwear rating work? I've still got the tires that came on my '92 when I bought it used. They aren't too grippy (I can slide the rear easily accelerating in 2nd), but they still have a fair amount of tread on them. They are rated 420 treadwear. I'm thinking I'll just head to a tire shop when it comes time for replacement, 'cause though I'll pay more, I won't need to worry about doing my own tire rotations, alignments, and balancing.

I thought tires supposedly grip better on dry road when they're bald, just awful on wet roads. Is that wrong?

1) I'm getting the Kumhos next month. For the money, they seem to perform as well as tires costing about $30 ea. more. If you want to compare, go to tirerack.com, enter your size, then do the compare feature. People send in reviews that are then averaged for categories like treadwear, wet traction, dry traction, noise, etc. If you want to see the reviews, just click on that link.
misnomer - tread ratings vary, despite the number on the tire. A 420 rating should get you about 40K of mileage, but likely at a trade for performance. Most performance tires are at or below 300. For autox, the rating must be at least 160 (which is good for about 5K mi). But, I know RE730s (w/ a 300, IIRC) don't last as long as others w/ a 220 rating.
goodyear eagle are good dont get pirelli they wear out fast.

Bald tires are no good really, cause you have worn off all the tread, the tread is where the compounds that make you stick are, once that is worn out the compund can ofter times change, drastically comprimising your grup characteristics.... As for tread wear, depends how you drive, you like to drive, burnout etc... well just about anything will burn out fast. If you want a decent tread rating, look for something around 200-250. That will give you a decent wear (20k min) and and be pretty sticky, very much like the a520 tires... which are great tires by the way. Make sure you don't get anything under 100 though. I had a friend with those and we could actually make beads of rubber come off under hard cornering... not a good thing unless you like spending 500$ bucks a summer... or more!

Dunlop SP Sport 8000 excellent treadwear, i use them for time trials, they're pretty good in the wet, and they're kinda old so they're cheap, i think i got mine for like $350, or else if there are any left Bridgestone Potenza RE71 is an excellent gripping tire, wears out kinda fast but should be really cheap, i have personally used both these tires and would recommend them, any other Bridgestone Tire is also an excellent choice (all bridgestones wear kinda quickly though)

oh and absolutly DO NOT get low profile tires because you will get no traction in bad weather and part of your suspension is in the tires so it will ride a lot harder
