LONDON, England -- Fears were growing for former world rally champion Colin McRae after a helicopter crashed on land near his home in Lanarkshire, Scotland on Saturday.

McRae won the world rally championship in 1995 driving a Subaru.

McRae was the registered owner of the helicopter, reported Sky News. The 39-year-old is a licensed pilot and is known to fly regularly in the area.

Local police in Strathclyde sealed off the area around the crash and said they were unable to confirm how many people were aboard the aircraft which crashed in late afternoon in overcast and windy conditions.

A force spokeswoman would only confirm that one person was feared dead in the accident and that there were no survivors. Reports claimed that two people were on board.

Campbell Roy, a member of McRae's management team, told Scotland's Sunday Mail: "I haven't had anything confirmed and at the moment it's speculation. "I'm waiting to speak to the family to find out exactly what's happened."

McRae became the Briton to win the world rally championship drivers' title in 1995, driving a Subaru. He was also runner-up in 1996, 1997 and 2001 and was renowned for his aggressive driving style.

McRae hails from a well-known motor racing family in Scotland.

His father, Jimmy, is a five-time British rally champion and his brother, Alister, is also former British rally champion and competed in the world championship.

McRae is married with two children.

Man helicopters and small planes. They always seem to play a part in the loss of famous peoples lives. R.I.P. Colin McRae.

OMG! Thats horrible. I just read an article about him in 0-60 Magazine. He seemed like a really cool dude. He was working on a prototype rally car that would likely smoke every one in existence. And he had some badass toys too. I wonder what the cause of the crash was. I also read he was a bit of a stunter in the air too. Hope that didn't play a part.

Engine troubles of some sort seem to be the biggest suspect at the moment, some of his neighbours who knew the sound of the helicopter well said it sounded rough just before it. The route he took towards his house over the trees isn't the way he normally comes in to land too but it seems he realised he had to try ad get it down quickly....

Such a sad loss, a true legend and a great ambassador for both motorsport and Scotland, not to mention the others involved. The guy has been my hero since I was a little boy watching him driving balls out and usually crashing anything he could get his hands on. RIP big man
