I’ve been wanting to get a more tune friendly replacement than a v6 stang, and my mom is basically buying it from me as her daily driver. So I don’t remember where, but I got turned on to the 240 line and I’ve been drifting around the net soaking up information for a couple months.

Nothing definite but I might swing by a local private party s14 for sale tomorrow, and start checking out other 13’s and 14’s in my area soon. So I was wondering if there are any trademark things (bad things, good things, whatever) that I should look out for that I might not have picked up on yet. I’d probably bring whatever I was serious about to a Nissan specialist for a look over also.

Once I get whatever I get I plan to do most things myself because I just like to work on things.

Of course I’m only looking for manual, non-vert. I’d prefer a fast back to a coupe but that’s out the window if I'm looking past an s13 anyway. I also live in central Florida.

2 things I can think of off the top of my head are rust under the spoiler on Fastbacks, and mileage, esp on 89-90's. Timing chain is weaker iirc. I suggest getting a newer 240 well KA24DE as apposed to the single came (mine sucks). Look out for HICAS on S13's, you will regret it ( I dont have it luckily). I will edit my post tomorrow when I am more awake. Hope this helps a little so far. If you have any other specific questions feel free to PM me. Welcome to the boards also

s13 (my preference):
-Check drivers seat for wear; unzip the back and check the
bolts holding the back rest on for weld cracks.
-Check under the car for frame rust.
-Check the hatch for rust under the carpet
-Look in the rear wheel wells for rust holes at the bottom corner of the front of the well (where the panel mates to the well) This is indicatative of a leaky roof.
-Check the speedo cluster (well known failure)
-Check the t/c rods for ooze
-Make sure power windows are ok, especially on drivers side
-Check dimmer switch.

None of these (except for excessive rust) are too expensive to fix (and the seat is free w/ if u have a welder) but are known issues and should be factored into to the price.

BTW, Best 240 ever in my opion: 90-91, NO-HICAS!

If you hear a clunk from the back when shifting, the rear sub-frame bushings are toast. Those are a PITA to replace (and expensive!.

Why would anyone regret buying a SuperHICAS car? Factory LSD, ABS, bigger rear sway bar... if you guys can't handle it, don't project it onto this poor guy SuperHICAS itself makes the car more stable too.

Edit: after some consideration, I can think of three situations where HICAS would not be a benefit:

1. SR swaps, since you need to source the proper power steering pump - extra cost and hassle.
2. serious drifters, if such a thing exists... and I'd say almost noone in the US qualifies.
3. serious racers, serious enough to have a car that is not driven on the street.

I don't think it's a case of people not being able to "handle it" whatever that means, but rather that I didn't feel a noticable improvement in the car, the cost is likely to be higher, and cost of replacement parts.

If you're happy w/ it then I'm glad, but this guy asked for advice and that's what we've given him...

That's fine and dandy, but some of these posts make it sound like he should avoid it like the black plague when in fact it does make the car more pleasant to drive, particularly if you don't plan to modify it.

The cars are old enough now that the way the car's been maintained and driven probably makes more of a difference in handling anyway.

I gave him advice too. The 'handle it' crack was just a joke, it seems like 4WS scares people or something by the way people talk on here.

I was always under the impression that the HICAS on our cars was very poorly made/designed compared to the HICAS found on Skylines...

The main difference between the two is that the GT-R's setup is tied into the center differential (I THINK), and IIRC it has dual-channel ABS versus the 240SX's single-channel ABS.

This adds up to it being somewhat more effective on the GT-R. But, the 240SX system is still a nice piece, better than a passive 4WS system.

All in all its effects are very subtle. It's the suspension tweaks, ABS, and LSD that make it worth it.

You can't count wear items on a 12+ yr old car as reasons not to get one. Engine problems are one thing, but jeez, go spend $50 on new brake pads and fluid (that noise is your car's way of telling you they're toast).

The exhaust costs a bit more to fix, but again, it's 12 years old.

Sounds like you're having little trouble with the engine, so is it really that bad?

Oh, that would explain it.
What exactly do you mean by expensive?
