View Full Version : Just bought a Volvo 240...

So my neighbor just sold me his 1992 Vovlo 240 4 Door for $100. It runs fine and has all power options. Body is in great shape as well, factory "vomit" yellow paint :)
I am curious though as to what kinda of aftermarket backing the car has. I've done a few searches and come up with a few turbo add-ons and V8 Swaps but nothing for cosmetics.
Any info regarding my new "240" would be great.
P.S. I still havent forgotten about my 95' 240SX, there is no comparison between the 2 240's haha.
Thanks in advance!

Dude for a hundred bucks you just bought a car that will probably never die. Ever see Fifth Gear, what they did to the Toyota Hilux? Try some of that shit and see if you can make it stop working. How many miles are on it?

I wouldn't mod it...but you can put in some shiny new OEM parts for maintenance purposes.

Yeah I agree with SimpleS14. It would be best to do the routine maintenance stuff with it but, I know I would end-up trying to do some performance oriented modifications to the car hahaha.
Just curious, any pix?

Thanks for the input guys!
I'll snap some pics tomorrow. It's in great shape, i just wanted to toss on some factory fog lights and the rear tail light has a small crack. I noticed some clear lenses on Ebay, but Egay tends to have some shit stuff, so I'll stick with factory. I also like the dual glass lensed headlights of the earlier models, so i might swap them in and HID that set up...it's tough to see at night with the stockers.
I've seen alot about V8 swaps and swapping factory turbo motors, but at the same time i have to keep reminding myself that this is my "reliable" car now...so i suppose i should take everyones advice and leave it be...just maintain it.... :( I'm just not used to having an unmodded car, hahaha.
...Maybe some Bilstein shocks all around and drop is a hair, with some cheap 18's??? hahaha...the modification bug never dies with me :rawk::)

Thanks for all your info guys!!! I'm currently researching how to swap out the factory cassette deck...some wiring issues from what i've seen. I am also picking up a set of factory bosche fog lights and a modest tint job for the new 240. I figure that a set of springs and shocks are in the near future, along with a factory turbo add -on are soon to come as well.
This thing is in mint condition so i figure i have to show it some respect. :)

Well the turbo add on is factory, so no T4's here. Just the factory I believe T3 with a sidemount. The factory turbo models were supposed to have about 170hp vs my 110 with obvious tuning capabilities to the turbo set-up. I just want a little more pick up and parts seem to pretty easy to come by.

congrats you just bought a indestructable tank! lol Seriously your safer than shit driving a Volvo . Though it will not impress in power or handling department it will safely deliver you and your occupants to where ever you may go. If it gets hit you will most likely not get hurt.

There were no 240 turbodiesels in the U.S.; just diesel. I used to own one for 3 months until I sold it. Still miss it, what a tank it was.
Congrats on the purchase nonetheless, even though it's a one month old thread.

I could have sworn I was able to find one once. I probably just assumed it was a turbo diesel and not just a diesel. I tried finding a diesel one in the area here and had 0 luck. Hard to find old cars in Florida.

The 700's had the D24T, whereas the 240 Diesels had the D24.
Both of them are VW engines, by the way.

Sooooo, I was searching some stuff about factory turbo parts from Volvo's and stumbled on my old thread! :)
I feel bad. I had no idea that my thread went on for another month long after i posted in it last. Jeez this was from last October. Well thanks for the info haha (i'm a little slow sometimes) :)
But might as well use an old thread to ask: Does anyone know the specs on a Turbo from a early 90's Volvo 740 Turbo? And is the IC worth nabbing (decent air flow) from the same junked car?

i'll tell you this much. my dad had a 740 turbo, and at the time (mid 90's, i was like 10), i always thought it could haul ass. it started having issues with the turbo, actually (leaking oil or something) and he traded it for an 850, which was super slow.
and here's some info
B230FT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_B230_engine): 2.3 L inline-4, turbocharged (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbo), 160 hp ('85-92 740 Turbo **NOTE: '90-92 models produced 162 hp**)

It´s a Volvo 240. It doesn´t know how to die. It´s the Chuck Norris of cars.
Weld the diff and there you go. :bigok: You can put any small truck turbo on it, forget coolant and oil and it´ll still run (ketchup).

It would seem i left out some vital info on my post. I do own a 91 Volvo 240 and yeah it would seem that it is destroyable! :)
My real question is that I was at the scrap yard and noticed a few 740 Turbo models floating around. I also own a S14 that I am still trying to turbo charge. I was holding out for a T25 but a Scrap yard turbo it only like $45!! Also I noticed they come with a decent size FMIC, is that worth trying on the S14???
Thanks for all the help guys!!

I don't want to "mod it" to any extreme. Just some factory Turbo wheels and I'm ordering some KYB GR-2's and a mild lowering spring set. I'm installing the CD deck this weekend, and other than that...well i'm good with that. :)

Well, if you get bored, a 740 motor drops right in, then you have a turbo brick
turbobrick
04-13-2008, 11:05 PM
You should search the junkyard for wheels. Any wheels on the rwd cars will work on your car. A good choice is the hydra, its 16x6.5 +25, its fairly common and comes on all 940 turbos and some of the newer 740 turbos. Its what I'm currently running my cars.
Although, you can fit a 17x9 with a zero offset in the rear without fender modification, not sure about the front.

I highly recomend a set of ipd sway bars. Get them before lowering springs.

Honestly, I baught it as my reliable daily. So i was not trying to do any motor swapping or turbos. Although the very first weekend i had the car I made a run to the local junk yard and found a 740 turbo...had me very tempted. :)

Turbobrick: Ive searched, all i can find is sets of 3 wheels for the turbo model rwd wheels( i guess some people only need 1 :( ), and a few newer sets from fwd models though (i'm assuming the offset would be off)

Wheels can sometimes be hard to find. I lucked out when I went to the junkyard and got a good set of 16's. They're out there, but it may take a while to find a good cheap set in rwd offset, which is like 25 or less.
For sway bars you can check turbobricks.com for a used set. Or if you want to buy them new you can go to ipdusa.com
