Help me get my KA tranny back in... PICS!

I pulled the tranny out to replace the clutch... But I can't get it back in...
I'm doing this in my garage and by myself which sucks but I'm going to get a friend over to help me maneuver the tranny around as soon as possible...

I pushed the pilot bearing into place but how far does it need to go into the block/crank?... Right now I have it flush but maybe I need to push it in farther?... I checked that it fit the main shaft on the tranny and it was perfect...

The clutch was installed with a clutch alignment tool ofcourse...
I've tilted the motor back as well...

For the last two days I've been benchpressing the tranny off of my chest and stomach to get it into place but it just won't go in... I've been using the jack and tried to lift it from the front and the back but it just won't go...

It seems like the pilot bearing has such a perfect fit with the main shaft on the transmission that you can't be off by 1 degree...

I also have solid engine mounts if that makes a difference...

Anybody got any ideas or tricks... I've done this with my SR a couple of times but the truth is that I didn't check for the pilot bearing...

Did you use a clutch alignment tool.


40 bucks ill come help you out with it and well get her done.


Use a Breaker bar braced against the crossmember and the oil pan (ONLY IF YOU HAVE GREDDY ON SR)

you have KA, you need to find another way to move the engine at an angle down and back.

only need like 1/2 inch of movement like this.

or about 10 degrees of angle change.

do you think by chance that the pilot bearing got ( I dont know know what to call it, mushroom head?) where the outer part of it is kind of smashed in. Thats what happened to mine just sand it down a little bit and it should slide right in.

Steve, I PM'd you... It might just be a matter of another good hand in there...

I did use a clutch alignment tool...
The pilot bearing is brand new from Nissan and is not mushroomed at all...

What helped me get my transmission back in was flipping it upside down (so the shifter is pointing down), then getting the input shaft in, then rotating the transmission around.

Couldn't get it to go on in the normal orientation.

I bought some longer M10x1.5 bolts and pressed the tranny and engine together...

But now the tranny spins when the motor is on...

I'm wondering if the pilot bearing is too tight on the input shaft!?... Will that be OK once the car is on the ground?

Lol. Ran into this problem when tryin to complete it for the Falken Drift Showoff here.

Anyway, you basically have to make sure your T.O is on correctly and pushed back, because one bump and it falls off, so you'll have to make sure it stays on.

Next, when puttin the tranny back on the shaft, make sure it fits inside the hole. The shaft will sit sometimes on the pressure plate, but you dont want to do that, or it'll bend those fingers. It works better with two people (in my place i did it myself so its doable).

When you have it in place on the shaft then, you literally have to shake that tranny til it goes on there so that the teeth'll meet together and the tranny will slide right on. Make sure its lubed up too, without it, its hard.

Try that and see if that helps.

I got the tranny on but when I shift it won't go into gear...

It is as if I am not pushing in the clutch but I am...

I bled the clutch and can feel pressure and see the slave cylinder open and close...

to get it in the normal orentiation you need to draw the tranny in it took me a while the first time but i got it once you get the splines lined up your all set then insert the bolts to the tranny and draw it in works every time

how did you store the tranny? standing up?

try adjusting the linkage underneath the dash. and for getting the tranny in i always found lostening the motor mounts so the motor can tilt back made getting it in a ton easier.

just stick a wood block and jack up the front of your motor.

then he-man the tranny in.
dont forget to lube the shaft.

and.
put it in.
if it doesn't go in, use persuasion with nuts and bolts.

when did i say anything about bigger bolts.

use stock bolts.
just get the tranny in so the bolts reach.
then tighten them so there is no gap.

voila.
done many that way already, no problems.

anyways..
reading > me. didn't see you already mentioned you got it in.

check your T.O bearing.

if your slave is working fine and you can start it, only thing would be the t.o bearing and the fork.
in order for the tranny to spin, your clutch would have to be engaged, which seems like the problem.

That is going to suck if he has to take the tranny off again. I've done it before and putting it back on sucks bad.

Make sure all the obvious stuff is done, like making sure it's all the way on. The tranny is filled with fluid.

You didn't mention if it was running when you tried either, so if it wasn't then try that. If the tranny isn't spinning then it's hard (if not sometimes impossible) to get it in gear cause the sleeve can't line up the gears and engage.
