I did some searching and i found an old thread of Jeff240sx's asking about this.

From what I've read, I can either:

A. jack engine up

or

B. Lower the subframe

To me the subrame sounds easier but I'm not all that sure other the the four bolts I can see what else I'd need to take off.

I also question whether or not just removing the front sway bar will give enough access to remove it? Looking at this pic (which may be deceiving from the angle) I found while searching for sway bar info, looks like it should be able to slide forward if the swaybar is not there.

if you're just removing the lower oil pan (black stamped steel part) than you shouldn't have to drop the subframe

but if you're gonna drop the upper oil that bolts to the bottom of the block you might need to drop the subframe

Hmmm, I'm not even sure where the second oil pan is. Well I need to replace the lower one.

back the fucking truck up.

if your just removing the lower oil pan thats all you do:

just remove the lower oil pan.

The upper oil pan or aka Lower Casting can only be completely be removed by dropping the crossmember and putting jack stands under the engine tokeep it from falling onto the ground or something like that. This is only done if you have to replace the rod bearings or something insane like this.

there is a write up on ka-t.org
I loosened the sub frame bolts but left it on the end of the bolts. I also lifted the the engine. I had to remove the bolts for the tension rod and also the engine monts. I didn't have enough room to maneuver around the oil pick up so I had to take that off too. if I had to do it over again, I would have completely dropped the subframe.

It sure would help if we knew what engine this was....

OK. Got it. Thanks for the clarification.

Yup just like Steve said.

It's easy.

Except I'm an idiot and broke off one of the bolts.

When you take off the oil pan check for kiss marks from the oil pick up and if needed to or you just want to just bang from the inside out the bottom of the oil pan.

Mine has a GIANT dent in it from when I bought the car. I hope it's part of the leaking issue.

For the SR, drop it as you see it, there's no clearance issues.

On the KA there is only one oilpan, and it's full length of the block. Drop the front crossmember, just as I've detailed it a hundred times on here.

Support bellhousing with a stand/bottle jack.
Remove LCAs, pull steering rack loose.
Unbolt motor mounts.
Drop crossmember.

It's really only about a 20 minute job to get out. The swaybar clearance isn't the issue, it's the oil pickup that sits in the bottom of the pan.

Fuck, I searched like a MF and only found Jeff's thread.

And it is a KA. 20 min of work for you is like 2 hours for me. :Ownedd:

i think theres an easier way..
just jack up the rear,
unbolt the sway at the d-links.

proceed to unbolt the pan.
wiggle it out between the xmember and the motor.

not super hard, imo.
pita, yes.

or you can do it the way r240na said too :)

Dude, awesome. I was looking through the FSM and getting ready to get out my hoist and slingers. Wouldn't have even thought about the bellhousing. +Rep to you.

Good call^^

Also, you might need to take off the brakets that hold the sway bar and the bushing around it. That way you can wiggle it around to remove the bolts towards the front of the car. I'm not sure if its the proper way, but I hammered a flat head screwdriver into the corner of the pan to pry the bitch off. Don't forget to drain your oil before you do anything or else you end up with a mess.

I noticed the instructions on the first page said to use "Genuine Liquid Gasket" brand. Is Ultra Black ok?

At that point you may also consider pulling the motor to do other stuff as well. You're not doing much more work, if any, than pulling the motor.
