View Full Version : So my passenger side window shattered after my alarm was installed...

Today, I had my car alarm installed with a power door lock motor on the passenger side. When I opened the hood today while I was parking on a hill, the passenger side window shattered as I was opening it (note that it did not shatter as I was closing it).
I'm afraid I'm pretty much screwed, and will have to stomach the cost...
On top of this, when I got my car back I noticed a scratch in the dash that I talked to them about, and I hate being a pain in the *** -- but I've got some pretty bad luck.
How could this have happened? What should I explain to the shop that installed it? How much does it cost to repair a passenger side window professionally? What should I do?

tell the shop they fucked up....they better cover the cost of that, get an estimate from your insurance get a second estimate and a professional place and get the shop to fix it

Thanks for the quick response, man. Why would insurance cover it, though? Do I say it was vandalism?

No, don't say it is vandalism. Just get some quotes around on how much it would cost to replace. Make sure you talk to the shop as soon as possible. If they give you a hard time, get a lawyer if it's a problem to you.
For me personally, I would talk to the shop and just ask for a refund for the install costs. Then I would go to the junkyard and take a passenger window. You can replace that window in about 5 minutes with no problems. The hardest part for you is going to be getting all of the broken glass out of your door. I had to replace my passenger window when some punk busted it out. That was like 8 months ago and there is still glass coming out from the door panel haha. Good luck man, keep us posted.

I'm having a hard time proving that opening my hood can cause the passenger side window to shatter.
I'm beginning to think someone BB gunned me.

I've replaced a few windows on different cars, its pretty easy... As mentioned try and pick one up from a junk yard... But first try and contact the shop to see if they will refund your money for a bad install or try and figure out how your window really broke... Keep us updated with what you do, but if it comes down to you replacing it yourself its easy, the hard part is trying to get ALL the glass gone...

S13 door glass can be replaced in 10 minutes flat with a screwdriver and a 10mm socket. Easy. As for why it broke, that's pretty weird, I'd pull the panel and see if the actuator was binding up somewhere near the glass.

Talked to the shop, they were like opening the hood has nothing to do with the window.
Bought the window for $65 at a junkyard, installed by my uncle. I dunno what an actuator is.

the motor arm that makes the window go up and down. on 240s, as with any old car the motor starts to die and sometimes sputter and cause all sorts of shenanigans

No, the actuator is the power lock motor they installed in the door. If it binded up or was tight against the glass, it could have caused it to break. At this point though there's no need in pursuing it.
