Dear Minu Im,
Thank you for contacting PayPal.
Thank you for providing this information to us regarding the chargeback
that has caused your account to become negative. We are in the process
of disputing this with the credit card company and this process can take
up to 75 days to complete. Since the transaction was for a service it
was not covered by the seller protection policy. Please allow up to 75
days from 08/24/07 for a response regarding the chargeback.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us again.
Sincerely,
Jane

When accepting payment, make sure everything is correct. I was scammed out of $900 by a member on these boards, so believe me, it can happen to you. I sent them ALL evidence I had including tracking numbers, screen shots of PM's, and emails and they simply used the loophole saying service isn't covered by the evidence I provided. I would really suggest you guys to use caution when using paypal especially when dealing with somebody you do not know. I would suggest all of you to STOP using paypal, but I know how easy and fast it is. It's really up to you. I refuse to let such a shitty service take 3% of my hard earned money for absolutely no protection from scam.
Just a friendly warning.

What 'service'?
When paying through paypal you can choose two options: 1. Service, or 2. Goods
He used service, but I never really thought much of it... well now we know why he used it.

So am I to understand that it was an item? If so, why isn't paypal acknowledging so and adjusting their reaction accordingly?
Shitty. I hope you get your money back, Ben.

one time i got owned, i was selling some bmw headlights for 600 bucks to a confirmed address over ebay and all that jazz. the guy pulled his money back and claimed that he returned the item to me, and i never got it. i should fly 3000 miles to his address and go own him.

This happed to me, and i even lost the paypal action like you did. call your bank and let them know the story and claim fraud. I've got my money back twice, once through ebay(pos shit service dpt.) and paypal. If you want more info pm me and i will let you know what to do in more detail. The first time i was ripped on a h22 motor for 1300 bucks, and the second was for a turbo 600 bucks. although it takes up to 90 days to get it back, by claiming it through your bank you will get it back, and they go after the guy.

back about three years ago, the YuGiOh movie was in theaters. with every ticket, they handed out a promo card. a friend of mine worked at a theater and they wound up with a couple leftover boxes of them, which he took. we used my account to sell them on ebay for about 1200 dollars, and i accepted payment via paypal. i received the money and we both immediately blew it all on online bullshit, paying out of my paypal account. a couple days later, the buyer did a chargeback, claiming she never received the cards. i disputed it, but in the end i wound up with a locked paypal account.
last year, i set up a new paypal account. everything was cool. then, after a while, it asked for my social for some reason or another, which i provided. paypal then linked the old acount to my new one, and now i have two locked accounts. and if i ever provide my social again, this will keep happening. and paypal is the only convenient method of payment for ebay, along with plenty of other places (i.e. forum classifieds, donations to this site, etc etc etc etc for infinity).
paypal sucks, i have to send money orders when i buy things on ebay now.

paypal sucks.
now they have your ss #, watch out, they will report you to a collection aggency, and they can fuck up your credit score.
the problem with paypal, they will protect up to what the other person has in thier account.
now say you send someone 100 dollars. then you dispute it.
if they spent 75, paypal will only give you back the 25 thats in the other persons account, and then tell you the 75 was unrecoverable.
they pulled that shit on me once, and now i only pay through paypal with credit card, if there is a problem, i just call the card company and do a stop payment. it has saved me once.

Damn, and I've been trusting paypal and it was my only way to make a money transaction other than cash. Now that this is happening to more and more people, I best be more cautious.
Thanks for the heads up n1sm0r.

The thing with being in law school is ...it opens your eyes to all the ways you can get fucked.
Here is Paypal's "forum selection clause (https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/UserAgreement/ua/USUA-outside#dispute-policy)":
14.4 Law and Forum for Disputes.
"Except as otherwise agreed by the parties or as described in section 14.3 above, you agree that any claim or dispute you may have against PayPal must be resolved by a court located in Santa Clara County, California. You agree to submit to the personal jurisdiction of the courts located within Santa Clara County, California for the purpose of litigating all such claims or disputes. This Agreement shall be governed in all respects by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict of law provisions."
Cool for everyone in California, because Santa Clara is not that far away.
But if you live in, say, Florida, it means hiring a South Bay lawyer and possibly physically traveling there (possibly more than once) if you want to sue Paypal.
Anytime you click yes to any agreement, check out where the forum selection clause dictates you go when you wanna sue 'em. You might end up in a court somewhere in Iowa or something.
