I'm over Spiderman (since the last one ruined it for me big time).
Giant Robots are the new black in Hollywood. As long as they are done right...FINE BY ME!
Maguire Making Robotech
Could this be the end for Spider-Man?
by IGN Staff
September 7, 2007 - Tobey Maguire may be swapping his Spidey suit to climb inside a giant robot. Casting more doubt on Maguire's future involvement in the continuing Spider-Man film franchise, it's been announced that the actor is producing and may be taking a leading role in Robotech, a live-action flick based on the popular anime series from the 1980s.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights to the property after a lengthy negotiation, and Maguire will reportedly produce the adaptation under his Maguire Entertainment banner.
"We are very excited to bring Robotech to the big screen," Maguire told THR. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."
There's no director attached to the project, but the script is set to be penned by Craig Zahler. Zahler is best known in industry circles for penning a well-received, but as-yet-unproduced script, The Brigands of Rattleborge -- a dark, violent Western picked up by Vertigo Entertainment.
Warner Bros. is envisioning Robotech as a high-profile summer blockbuster.
THR calls the film a "sprawling sci-fi epic," and reveals that it takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots. Maguire would presumably play one of the pilots.

^^ yeah but Hollywood has fucked up shit before so I'm still worried!
Look at war of the worlds, they put a shit load of money, got Tom cruise and had a script that was already pretty much written being that the first movie was made and what happed to that??!!
So I kinda just want them to leave it alone because I am such a fan of the series that I will be really disappointed If they fuck this up.
BTW love the new avatar!

Sounds awsome, Ive been a fan of Robotech since I was YOUNG! I have the whole series on VHS and have some of the random made cartoons not made by the original creators.
Im sorry but Zero was not as good as Macross Saga (with rick hunter & skull squadron). My favorite series is still the New Generation. I have watched it a million times over and over. Something about it just brings me back to childhood.

Robotech Casting Call
Who will star in the live-action giant-robot adaptation?
by IGN Staff
September 7, 2007 - It was revealed today that Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire is producing and also might be taking a lead role in Robotech, a live-action adaptation of the classic anime series from the '80s. With Transformers a huge box office hit, does it come as any surprise that giant-robot movies are suddenly getting greenlit all around town? But as any anime fan worth his weight in manga will tell you, Robotech isn't just any giant-robot tale. So who should be cast in the live-action version of the tale in order to maintain the proper feel of the classic saga? Read on for a macro look at our Macross picks…
(A quick note: Obviously there are three ways you could go with a Robotech film, owing to the three different anime series that have been created based on the title. In this case we're going with the tale of the "First Robotech War" -- also known as the original series, titled The Macross Saga.)
The Humans
Captain Henry J. Gloval
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907082529989.jpg
The Character: Henry J. Gloval is the captain of the SDF-1 Macross (that stands for Super Dimension Fortress One), the chief spaceship used by the human heroes of the series. Gloval is of foreign descent (Italian or Russian depending on if you're watching the Japanese or English-dubbed version of the anime), a former submarine captain who oversaw the refit of the Macross, which originated as an alien spacecraft which crashed to Earth and was commandeered by humanity. As skipper of the SDF-1, the seasoned Gloval sees much action over the course of the series, including many battles with the alien giants known as the Zentraedi.
Casting Pick: Clint Eastwood is a natural for the part of Gloval, a born leader whose grace under pressure, experience, and calm make him an inspiration to the younger officers around him. Plus, Clint has already left the planet Earth before in Space Cowboys.
Rick Hunter
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090218101.jpg
The Character: Rick Hunter is a key character in the Robotech world. When we first meet him, he's young and innocent, but he of course has an innate ability as a pilot -- which is quickly put to good use in the first episode, as he visits Macross Island to watch the launch of the SDF-1 and winds up fighting against a Zentraedi invasion in a Veritech fighter (i.e., a giant-robot suit). After this incident, he winds up joining the Robotech Defense Force and becomes one of their ace pilots -- though a key aspect of the character is his anti-war feelings and his need to reconcile them with the realities of a war that must be fought.
Casting Pick: This seems in all likelihood to be the role that Tobey Maguire will take if he in fact does act in this film. From the wide-eyed innocence of the early Rick to the more experienced and darker character that he grows into, Maguire has already proven his capacity in both types of performances in the various Spider-Man films.
Lisa Hayes
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090219851.jpg
The Character: Lisa Hayes is the flight control operations and executive officer of the SDF-1. She comes from a military family and is the daughter of Admiral Donald Hayes, one of the key figures in the development of Robotechnology. As Captain Gloval's first officer, she saves the ship on a variety of occasions -- as when she created the "Daedalus" strategy during a battle with and major win against the Zentraedi near Saturn -- but she always leaves time for her romance with Rick Hunter. That's when she's not battling with the other object of Rick's affections, Lynn Minmei, that is.
Casting Pick: Keira Knightley can do romance and action, as we've seen in films like Pirates of the Caribbean and King Arthur. And she can be tough as nails, too, even while hiding a softer side that her lessers don't often see. Sounds like Lisa Hayes through and through.
Lynn Minmay
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090219101.jpg
The Character: Unlike Lisa, Lynn Minmay is conceited, girlish, and flashy. Rescued by Rick Hunter during the Zentraedi attack on Macross Island, Lynn -- who had always dreamt of being famous -- becomes a celebrity onboard the SDF-1 Macross, a singer and a movie star. Additionally, her music is a cause of great confusion for the Zentraedi, and ultimately it is her singing which helps to bring an end to the first Space War. She is the girl who ended a war by singing! Her romantic triangle with Rick and Lisa, however, is far less straightforward.
Casting Pick: Amanda Bynes, that youthful bundle of hotness, is Lynn personified. Plus, she recently proved that she can sing in the film version of Hairspray, and her comedic stylings, honed over the years on Nickelodeon and her WB sitcom, would fit with Lynn's personality too.
Amanda Bynes as Lynn Minmei??!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they need to stick to a hot Asain chick not a comedic white girl!!!
Keira Knightley as Lisa Hayes though is a good choice.

You know my problem with Hollywood re making these movies is that they don't ever seem to stick to the originals. In transformers at least they used the guy who did the original Optomus prime voice which I respected. But come on, Gloval is suppose to be russian and dose Amanda Bynes look anything like Minmei?

Honestly I don't haver a problem with Hollywood making some changes to things here and there. I understand their stance on the whole thing. They need to make money and they need to make it mainstream. There's no getting around that so matter how much us fanboys complain. But, like I said, I don't have a problem as long as the over-all movie is good. They changed some things about TF, but it still rocked because they put the right people in charge of it.
I can't wait to start seeing some movie designs.

It will suck monkey balls just like Transformers. That movie was just a random summer movie with the name of a classic cartoon on it. The designs were lame, the actors sucked, the story was nonexistant, the dialogue was pathetic.
Robotech won't be much better. Robotech is already the bastardization of three anime series; this is gonna be the bastardization of a bastardization. If crap could crap, it would look like Hollywood versions of classics.
If you want to see animated Valkyries ("veritechs"), download Macross Zero. The CG and mecha design will rape anything they can do for the Robotech movie.
Or worse, they'll try to design a new Valkyrie, and it will be a gaudy, overdone, hideous thing that appeals to the masses who don't have anything better to do.

there are others that didn't either
i've been a transformers geek for a while, through the dead period in the 90s and on
i have a shitload of their toys, owned, bought, sold even more. Went to Botcon before Hasbro hit it big. Lived through Beast Wars. Cried through Beast Machines. Laughed at Robots in Disguise. Jumped with joy over Binaltech and TF Classics.
Hasbro's just cashing in on the name with the casual fans while spitting on the hardcore. The TF name is oversaturated.
I still have a bitter taste in my mouth over Hasbro's involvement with Dreamworks and how they fucked up the comic (the first time it came back)
If the TF movie were named "Gobots", i wouldn't give two shits...because it wouldn't matter. But they decided to rape my favorite franchise as a childhood, so they can die for all I care.

I'm as hardcore and fanboyish as they come. I don't like that mentality. It's a "never happy with anything" point of view. I was happy they made the movie. I was happy with the new designs even. The story was a summer movie. What was it supposed to be, Shawshank Redemption The Notebook?
It's giant robots fighting. If you were looking for an intricate story, I think you were expecting a little too much. Fuck, I wouldn't even have wanted one.

It's older but I think that Macross Plus was a much better series, story wise, than Zero. Zero was mainly awesome eye candy.
But, meh, whatevers. I'll see it if it's good or decent - I have no expectations. And as far a giant robot movies go, I'm more curious about the upcoming (?) Evangelion movie.

Except I'm not unhappy with everything. I'm very, very happy with Binaltech; I loved RiD (car robots). I'm loving the TF: Classic series. The Beast Wars last couple seasons were friggin' greatness.
If it sucks, I'll point it out; if it's good, I have no problem being thankful and enjoying it.
As for "it's just a summer movie"...great. I didn't want it to be a summer movie. If they weren't going to do it seriously, then don't make a TF movie at all, period. I'm content with our classic animated TF movie and no sucky live-action movie...hell, TF has no business being live-action at all.
My general stance is any TF story that involves humans will suck by default, until I'm convinced otherwise. Hasbro was just appealing to the lowest common denominator here; that's their right as a business, but it shits on the hardcore fans that actually care about the name and image of the franchise and their memories of the show back in the days. I didn't wake up early before school each day to watch that show only to grow up and find Bumblebee pissing on someone.
I got nothin wrong with giant robots fighting. It'll never get old. I just don't want the TF name slapped on a show with UGLY giant robots fighting PRETENDING to be "transformers" as I know them. Could Megatron be any uglier? Why the fuck is Bumblebee a Camaro? Did they HAVE to partner with general motors?
ManoNegra:
Agreed. Macross Plus was the better story; Macross Zero was just pornography.

Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the only younger actors I feel who has any sort of charisma and strength to him. Everyone else is just trying to play hardguy and not doing it right.

Yea the stories kinda sucked but they were meant for a kid audience back in the 80's. The premise however is a very good one.
LOL I didn't want to post in the transformers thread but count me as one of people that thinks it's mediocre at best. I had just about every transformer toy growing up and I just didn't get into the movie.
More often than not when American studios take Asian hits they fuck it up because they hire people who don't know or don't care about the source material. Like what Bay did to Transformers. He admitted he knew shit about Transformers before doing the movie and only did it because of Spielberg, so it was just a paycheck to him. Therefore a lot of liberties were taken. Now compare it to Lord of the Rings where Peter Jackson was a huge fan of Tolkien and it was for the most part faithful to the novels.
Robotech........I dunno. I feel like it's gonna end up like transformers. Mediocre at best.

As a kid the story was pretty cool (and complicated for my small mind) but when i grew up I went back and used to rent the subtitled versions from a local place, then it turned into a lil more than things blowing up :P
I think this will take a lot than the Transformer movie because there was a lot more based around the characters and their interaction with each other (relationships, romance, etc.) That stuff was always cheesy as a kid, but hopefully they dont mess with it too much and make it ultra cheesy.
IMO even though a lot of people will disagree, they should take a different approach to the story (like a side story) instead of trying to pack an entire season into one movie. A lot of movies have done that and it just ends up being horrible

He admitted he knew shit about Transformers before doing the movie and only did it because of Spielberg, so it was just a paycheck to him.
Even if he wasn't a fan he stayed true to the TF series pretty damn well. I could ramble on ALL DAMN DAY with examples (Magatron: "You disappoint me gain Starscream.") It's Hollywood. They have to make money. That means changes need to be made. There's not enough fanboys out there for them to make enough money on movie's this big. Get over it. If you expect anything less from this movie, stop posting in here now and commit to not seeing it. Because it's not gonna be exactly the same. Bottom line.

finally a chance for elijah to be a pussy on purpose.
i think for the macross movie they should go more along the lines of macross plus. a self contained plot within the overall universe. it would be great if they made something well enough for it to be considered part of the canon by the fanboys.

I grew up on Robotech too. My opinion of it soured for two reasons: 1) Once I saw how badly they butchered the original series to make them into a semi-passable storyline it was hard to watch the chopped ones. 2) The people who licensed the original 3 series then started claiming that they had sole rights to the Macross brand. This is the reason we didnt see any macross/southern cross/mospedea games. Fucking assholes.
So the news of this is bittersweet because it means we get to see some mecha we rembember as kids on the big screen! But it also means that it's the bastardized storyline where we are fighting over batteries, and huge giants freak out about J-Pop.
As for Macross toys, I cut my teeth on a Transformers Jetfire toy that I later found out was a VF-1S. (God the transformers jetfire looked like poop compared to that toy) The next discovery was that the shit-tastic gobots were cutting corners with their models by importing mospedea models as the two main robots (good = plane, bad = motorcycle). Lo and behold t hey were transformable models of the Genesis Climber Mospedea Alpha Fighter and Lancer Motorcycle! It was such a nice find.
Anywhoo, here are some images I've created in the past that are Macross themed. It's nice to have people that like the same shit you do so I figure I'll share the love with my 240sx and Macross loving forum people. You all are free to cut them up and use em in your sigs or whatever. Just let people know that BoomZilla made them :)

^^ That one I did as an entry in a contest on macrossworld.com. There was this uber rare garage kit of a redesigned Mac II monster that appeared in the Japan-only Macross VFX II Playstation game. The original one from the series was a non-transformable mecha. The game desginers were like 'hmm it would be cool to have this huge guy be a playable vehicle, if only it could transform into a plane.' So the vehicle designer for Macross, Shoji Kawamori, got to work and redesigned it as the VB-6 Konig Monster. So thats the backstory, the front story is that some dude at on macrossworld.com procured a garage kit and re-molded it so he could sell them to US members that would otherwise never be able to purchase one of the $900+ kits. The original box for the kit was this shitty photocopy and a brown box. So the forum admins held a contest and the winning designer got a free re-mold of the kit. I didn't win, lol :(

I say dont expect it to be like the series. Itll probably be something kinda like transformers. Use the same main characters and idea for the movie but the plot will be completely off left field. They might use the main story but different ending. I see it being along the line of: Space fortress crashes, we find it, use it, gets attack by aliens, use the fortress to kick aliens ass, start loosing since we dont know wtf were doing, find a magic botton that transforms fortress into giant battle ship that blows everything out of existense, humans win and aliens die.

More casting from IGN....
From what I got from it, I believe these are just IGN's castings and are not the actors for the movie.
Roy Focker
The Character: An exceptional pilot himself, Roy Focker (no, not that Focker) is a bit of a rogue -- a womanizer and partier. A hero of the Global War, he went on to become the top test pilot for Project Valkyrie, which would be key in the implementation of the Veritech fighter. He also was the leader of the famous Skull Squadron. Roy has a history with Rick Hunter and was the one who invited him to the SDF-1 launch on Macross Island that eventually leads to Rick joining the Robotech Defense Force. Focker serves as a mentor to Rick, and his fate in the Macross saga has a profound effect on all his fellow officers.
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090217164.jpg
Casting Pick: Nathan Fillion of Firefly/Serenity fame isn't just a fan favorite, he's also great as a Han Solo kinda guy, which is exactly what Roy is. You know the type: an old softie who likes to have fun but will take a bullet for you too.
Claudia Grant
The Character: Claudia Grant is the second officer of the SDF-1 as well as the chief communications officer. She's also the love interest of Roy Focker, having shared a relationship with him prior to the series that is rekindled during The Macross Saga.
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090220210.jpg
Casting Pick: Zoe Saldana, who showed up in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and is currently shooting James Cameron's Avatar, is obviously on the rise in Hollywood (she was reportedly offered the role of Uhura, another communications officer, in the upcoming Star Trek redux too). Can't you just see her as Claudia?
Max Sterling
The Character: Max Sterling was stranded along with many others on the SDF-1 after the first attack by the Zentraedi, but the incident soon gave him the chance to join the Robotech Defense Force as a pilot. He proved himself as an ace Veritech pilot, and eventually meets his future wife Miriya -- an opposing Zentraedi pilot -- after defeating her in combat.
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907102626149.jpg
Casting Pick: Jake Gyllenhaal's quiet and unassuming personality will fit well with Max -- as long as the actor wouldn't mind dying his hair blue.
Ben Dixon
The Character: Like his friend Max Sterling, Ben Dixon became a Veritech pilot after the initial Zentraedi attack. Flying in the Vermillion Squadron under the command of Rick Hunter, Ben is an important part of the Robotech Defense Force family.
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907102625586.jpg
Casting Pick: Since Ben is often involved in comic hijinks, Knocked Up's Seth Rogen might be a good way to go with the character.
Dolza
The Character: The Supreme Commander of all the Zentraedi forces, Dolza is a militaristic extraterrestrial giant -- and a bad, bad guy. He is in charge of untold millions of vessels and soldiers in his role as Supreme Commander. He originally sends his officer Breetai to track down the missing SDF-1 Macross, which ultimately leads to the start of the First Robotech War. But after repeated attempts to recapture the Zentraedi vessel, and his discovery that exposure to humanity is corrupting his Zentraedi forces, Dolza attempts to wipe out all of humanity -- and almost succeeds (does devastating 95 percent of the Earth's surface count?).
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090220601.jpg
Casting Pick: Michael Clarke Duncan already is a giant, basically, and he can play a cartoonish evil leader well enough (see Daredevil for more on that). Add a bit of makeup and some visual effects wizardry and, before you know it, you've got your Dolza.
Breetai
The Character: Breetai is the Zentraedi commander, second in the line of military power only to Dolza, who is sent by his overseer to recover his race's lost SDF-1 interstellar spaceship. A veteran soldier and leader, Breetai's experience nonetheless is not enough to defeat the humans who he encounters while on his mission. He is unable to understand the ways of humanity, and he eventually betrays his leader and joins up with his former foes after being deemed by Dolza as "corrupted" by the ways of mankind. It is with his help that the humans are able to persevere.
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090220929.jpg
Casting Pick: Clive Owen could bring the depth to this role that is necessary. An experienced military man and strategic genius, Breetai's inability to defeat his seemingly inferior foes would frustrate and confound him, and Owen's abilities as an actor would work well in such scenes. See Children of Men for another example of Owen watching events happen around him that he no longer has control over.
Khyron
The Character: Khyron is a genius but unstable Zentraedi commander. Also known as Khyron the Backstabber because of his Darth Vader-like penchant for attacking his own men, his Botoru Battalion was brought to the Earth solar system by Breetai to assist in the capture of the SDF-1 Macross. Arrogant and impulsive, and possibly insane, his successes in battle are tempered by his brutality and his recklessness, and he is often as much of a hindrance to Breetai's efforts as he is an asset -- putting his own forces in as much danger as he does his enemy's.
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090219460.jpg
Casting Pick: Someone who gives off that unstable vibe would be required for the role of Khyron, so why not go with a Heath Ledger or a Gary Oldman? They're both genre vets now (or in Ledger's case are about to be, thanks to the Batman films), and they can both play crazy like… well, like crazy!
Exedore
The Character: Sort of a Mr. Spock to Commander Breetai's Captain Kirk, Exedore is a comrade to the Zentraedi leader who provides advice, strategy, and scientific know-how. His title is Domillan, or advisor, and he is also the keeper of Zentraedi law, lore, and history, and as such he does warn his commander of the dangers of being contaminated by the human race. When the time comes that Dolza orders the destruction of Breetai's fleet, Exedore journeys to the SDF-1 Macross and proposes the truce that eventually leads to the defeat of Dolza and the salvation of humanity.
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090217695.jpg
Casting Pick: Exedore is physically deformed and hence will require some makeup prosthetics for whoever plays him, so the producers of the film could go with an unknown here to save a few bucks. Or they could just throw caution to the wind and cast Zachary Quinto, who's already playing a Spock-type guy in another big-budget film that's coming soon. (Actually, he's playing the Spock-type guy.)
Miriya Sterling
The Character: Miriya was the top pilot of the Zentraedi. Serving on a female-only vessel, she accompanied Breetai on his mission to recover the SDF-1 Macross from the humans. But after getting her Zentraedi butt kicked by the Robotech Defense Force pilot Max Sterling, she agreed to "micloning" and is shrunk down to human size from her original giant stature so as to go on a spy mission against the humans. Her real motive, however, is to murder Sterling -- the man who had defeated her. But in case you didn't notice by her last name, she winds up falling in love with and marrying him instead, and joins the Earth forces too.
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090218788.jpg
Casting Pick: Leelee Sobieski has a cold, hard edge that would work to sell the more threatening aspects of the character early in the tale, though her gentler side would come to the forefront as she gets involved in the more lovey-dovey aspect of the character.
Azonia
The Character: After Breetai proves unable to recover the SDF-1, Azonia is assigned by the Supreme Commander of the Zentraedi forces, Dolza, to take on the job. Alas, she proves even less able to complete the task than her predecessor, and her having to work with the unbalanced Khyron only complicates matters. Ultimately, she joins with Breetai and the humans to take on Dolza's fleet in one final battle.
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/818/818866/robotech-20070907090218429.jpg
Casting Pick: This is one of many roles that will probably get less screen time in a feature film than it would in a TV series or ongoing story, and as such an up-and-comer or unknown might be cast. How about Tricia Helfer, Number Six from Battlestar Galactica? She's surely itching for a shot at the big screen, appeals to the fanboys in spades, and can certainly play the part…
Wow, that's a perfect casting selection for Roy Focker.

Did they HAVE to partner with general motors?
seriously , WTF man, i grew up whatching the original G1 ( i actually have the complete G1 series iin a box set) and seeing the gayness of bumblebee not being a VW, Optimus looking like he was riced out, and megatron looking like something i pucked kinda killed the story for me,
Ravage looks like a cyclops on 4 legs, WTF, why is arcee 3 bikes, and why is the cop car not Prowl and on the good side...WTF!?
