If you bought an SR20DET in japan w/ tranny n everything, would it be a lot cheaper? I lived in Okinawa, Japan for about 3 years n everything was a lot cheaper over there, but I never looked into engine swaps cuz my rb20det was just fine.

rb20det? why not jus keep that instead of gettin the sr? better yet get the rb25det :-)
Dude are you fucking dumb?
Why did you even think of the sr engine?<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>?<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>?<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>???

To answer your question, yes it would be alot cheaper to buy it there. Find out how much it would cost to ship it and add that onto what you pay for the engine and then determine if it's cheaper. Okinawa isn't that near a military base? What branch were/was in?

Okay ppl, just to clear something up here. I "had" an rb20det, but that was in a skyline gts-t over in japan, not in a silvia k's or 240sx. I wish I had a rb20det in my 240 right now, but that would cost me 2 much n I can't even begin to think to doing that kind of mod to my car right now. I think I'm going to look into the sr20's over there b/c I know one of my friends there still said u could get a decent one on a wrecked silvia for like 1k, but I wanna look into it more before I make a bold statement like that. By the way, I'm not in the military, but my dad is. There are a lot of military bases over there in okinawa, I think the cheap, fast cars over there was the best part though. It's an island, so cars, especially used cars, weren't as expensive as in mainland japan. Peace.

Well, SR20s are getting relatively more expensive "by the day"...
even w/ the consideration of the shipping fees and importing fees and all that stuff, the main problem is that the engine is in high demand.
from an economics standpoint, as the demand goes up... so do the prices for products that are in minimal supply.
Unless Nissan comes out w/ an engine that is better than the SR20 that is relative to its power and performance, expect the SR20 to be expensive on North American shores.

it costs ~$3000 (not including installation either!) for an S13 SR20 in Canada... that's crazy stuff... now imagine the price of an S15 SR20 if a canadian were to purchase it.....

yeah, the prices r pretty crazy. i still think i might do it down the road if i don't turbo my ka, n that's b/c i've only got 21k miles on it. i wish i could find a used turbo kit in good condition, that'll be the day.

Shop around, you might get a better deal. OR come to the US and buy one here, they should run a lil cheaper.

hey people(particularly you blankflip),
i AM in okinawa right now with the marines on camp foster(i'm sure you know where that is), anyway, i have been on the mad hunt for an SR20 and it's a bit harder than i thought it would be. CA18DETs are pretty common though. I myself am getting the SR20 but if the CA had more parts support in the states, I would get it instead because it's quite a tough little engine. what base were you on blank?
