Hi fellow Zilvians here is my rb25det swap project. Let me start off by saying thanx to Gary at www.sykoperformance.com without Gary's rb swap kit this project wouldnt have happened. Also, a big up to Ali and Eric at Machine Tune in Gardena, you guys are upmost professionals.

First of all everyone thought I was crazy for getting rid of my sick sr20det swap but I wanted to try something different, not that it hasnt been done before but I was seeking what everyone wants MORE POWER. Out came the sr20 and project "mini me" started. I call it mini me because this is the closest I will ever come to owning a Skyline in the states.

Now there's alot more to this project than I will list at this time only because I want to focus on the Syko Performance installation kit. This kit was alot of fun to work with because of it's ease and perfict fit. This kit requires the use of the r33 front crossmember. The only difference between the r33 and usdm 240sx crossmember is that the r33 motormount pads are located further forward. This is what makes the kit have the factory like fit unlike other kits out there that use the usdm crossmember and adaptor brackets. Also, when comparing the r33 stock mounts and the Syko mounts, the Syko mounts locate the motor about 1.00-1.25" lower and 0.5-1.00" further back for better weight balance. In addition the Syko mounts are polyurathane so the motor doesnt twist during acceleration.

Now before people start asking me how much did it cost you have to ask yourself are you going to half-ass it or do it right the first time? To do it right you got to spend the money and by that I mean prevenative maintenance. Things like timing belts, spark plugs, waterpump, clutch (etc) are much easier to replace while the motor is out of the car and reduces down time. Sure you can do these later but in the long run it will cost you more. I will list the items I used for the complete swap but for now here's the Syko Performance kit...

This is the motormount on the passenger side. Both the mounts are labeled so you dont get them mixed up during install. Notice the relationship between the 2 crossmember mounting holes and the motormount pad itself.

Driverside mount.

usdm steering rack on the r33 crossmember fits perfict.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/DSC03953.jpg

Now here's the turbo elbow thats included with the kit, notice how much room is provided for the steering shaft. Other kits do not address this issue! People that have used other rb swap kits out there have used the Greddy replacement elbow and beat it with a hammer to clear the shaft but who wants that, not me. The Syko elbow bolts up to sr20det down pipes so your existing exhaust will not need to be modified.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/DSC03955.jpg

All ready to go in, r33 crossmember with Syko mounts. This is a chance to see, even though the new mounts lower the engine in the bay, you won't be dragging the oil pan. Looking good!
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/DSC03956.jpg

The motor/tranny is sitting on a moving dolly so we can move it around for...that's right you guessed it, we are installing it from the bottom. I've talked to Gary on this one and he said after doing this swap many times that it's better to go in from the bottom. Installing from the top is not impossible but is much more time consuming. It took 15-20 minutes for the 4 of us and a lift to get the crossmember bolted in place. Not once did my freshly painted engine bay get scratched.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/DSC03980.jpg

Almost in.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/DSC03981.jpg

After we got the motor in place it was time to mount the tranny brace. As you can see the Syko tranny spacers utilize all the chassis holes for a secure fit. The tranny brace is from the r33 clip but you can use the usdm 240sx automatic one as well. For this kit you need to get a driveshaft from www.driveshaftshop.com They have the P/N of this driveshaft on there site in steel or aluminum and ship quick. As a bonus you can see how my hydraulic e-brake is spliced into the rear brake line, thanx Earl's!
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/DSC03989.jpg

For cooling I used the s14 factory replacement rad with FAL 2500cfm slim fans. It's a tight fit with only .25-.5" clearance between the fanmotor backing plate and power steering pully but it doesnt rub at all and the car runs cool.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/DSC04002.jpg

Things not pictured are the powersteering lines and Syko front swaybar spacers. You can use the stock high pressure line but I recomend a custom braided line from Earl's because after time the soft line will tend to kink due to the 90 degree banjo fitting. As for the swaybar spacers they are simple, they space the bar about .75-1.00" lower to clear the oil pan, easy stuff. Also, I highly recomend a power steering cooler because the usdm 240sx super long hard return line that goes from one side of the car to the other and back is used for cooling and does not fit with the r33 crossmember. I used a stock 350z power steering cooler spliced into the soft return line which works well.

I'm happy to report I've done 2 drift events with it already and the car kicks ass, the torque made drifting a bit smoother and the extra nose weight isn't bad at all. Stay tuned I will have a complete build list with extra parts also available from Syko Performance.

hope you had a good reason to put it in from the bottom...... cause it slides in like butta from the top and I save an hour dismantling/reassembling all the suspension stuffs and moving them out of the way. but everyone has their preference.

also i might HIGHLY suggest you get a bigger radiator ASAP! that factory one will heat soak fairly quick (just replaced mine after dealing with random overheating and 6hour drives that should have taken two but many cool down stops waiting for the engine to cool down)

but nice looking swap. and i would be interested in one of those coil pack covers.

and a third on the stock intake mani being gay. anyone want to give me a good one?

Thanx for your suggestions...to answer your questions

-Because the new crossmember needed to be installed along with the steering rack, plus I had access to a lift, we went through the bottom. All the suspension assy needs to be dismantled anyway with the new crossmember so we installed the whole thing as 1 piece. Went in like butta too.

-I've had no heating issues yet. The needle did start to rise a bit only because I was at the balcony in 90-95 degree temps drifting the crap out of it. After a rest it didn't happen the rest of the day. I'd like to mention that a vented frp hood is now installed to aid in cooling (plus it looks cool):D

To unicoladron-I may get some vid this weekend at Driftday El Toro, I'll keep you posted.

I agree with Tenchuu, you should get a new radiator. I have a greddy radiator,n1 water pump, and dual 12" fal fans, and I have never seen the temp gauge move up past where it normally is. But today i was driving through chino hills with an outside temp of about 100 degrees and the temp gauge started moving up pretty quick. Keep in mind that i was at cruising speed barely on boost at around 3k rpm. Blasting the heater for about a minute solved the problem. I think if you were at the track in this heat, you would probably overheat after a lap or two of mashing the throttle.

s13coupedrfter
09-04-2007, 03:04 AM
250sxdet-Your statement makes sense and thanx for the suggestion. For now the car is great. I think a problem with rb swaps is the lack of space between the radiator and the front of the motor. There's no place for the hot air from the radiator fans to go. Even with the n1 pump good fans and Greddy radiator the car can run hot even if your just cruising around. The key is to get that hot air out so the radiator doesn't heat soak. This is why I added a frp vented hood. After the hood I noticed the inside of the car is cooler (car is fully gutted and acts like a oven). At stop lights I can see the hot air rising out the vents so the hood is working.

Also, what is your fans rated at (how much cfm's)?

Here's a shot to give everyone an idea of how low the motor sits. For those worried about the extra nose weight, it's really not bad at all. Almost half the weight is in the tranny which is half way down the car. At the track the car felt great in the turns, it feels like the front end is more planted. During the swap I increased the front spring rate from 7kg to 8kg to compensate. The Syko kit helps with the balance well with the motor placement. The next upgrade in store is wide body and wider rims/tires to handle the power and increase cornering speeds. Look for a video link soon...

Here's a shot from Driftday Formula doughnut on the practice course. I will have a youtube link soon, just finished the upload but it doesn't show up on the search yet (youtube help said it could take up to 8 hrs).

The car ran great all day, this is the event in which I really started to get a hang of the new setup. While everyone was competing I had the 2nd gear practice course all to myself!!! I ran the course 8 times back to back and not once did the water temp needle rise. The hood really helps with the cooling and preventing the rad from heat soak.

I'd like to mention that I'll be doing a step by step oil cooler install on this thread so stay tuned.

nice clean build. I've got a question that hopefully someone can answer. I want to do a RB swap in my CA 180sx. Is a RB20 worth putting into sn S13? the only reason I ask is because I can't afford a huge RB25 build. Sorry to hijack your thread, just thought it'd be a good opportunity to ask.

you dont need the heatshield, the aluminum casing is enough. The heat shield is made for the old mounts and with the new ones will just cause vibrations to transfers through.

At the time it seemed like a good idea but your right. I'm too lazy to take it out and it's not posing a problem right now. Good eye though.

I'm doing Machine Tunes event this Sunday and I got a roll cage cam mount (thanx Gary) and a suction cup mount so I'll have some good footage.

As I mentioned before I'll have a oil cooler install coming very soon, it's going to be sick! Also, 5 lug conversion pictoral.

I'm going to do some more events soon, I just have to get a saturday off (I'm working 70-80hrs a week). Gotta support my drifting addiction somehow.

Sorry everyone about the footage I promised, bummed about the oil catch can thing but the car is back together and runs great!

I got a question about how much power streering line I used...about 6 feet (2) 3 foot pieces for the p/s cooler return line. High pressure line is braided maybe 2 feet.

Side note: the oil cooler upgrade/filter relocation used alot of -10 line=expensive. Will have up in a couple of hours.

s13coupedrfter

Finally here's the oil cooler project...

When I went to Earls I asked for the rb25det block fitting/filter relocation block and they gave me "nissan parts" indicating sr, ka and rb should use the same block fitting. I originally used the ka oil filter on the rb25 anyway so it should work with all. I first planned to use a sandwich plate without the filter relocation but I could'nt find any with -10 female ports so I decided with the block fitting and filter relocation set-up. I used -10 line because the inner dia. is the same as the inner dia. of the oil filter screw on bolt sticking out the rb block. Here's some pics...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/mt_drift2010.jpg

Here is the holding bracket I modified to hold my I/C, yup I'm mounting the cooler between the head lights in direct airflow. I used washers as spacers for now, later I'll machine some solid spacers
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/mt_drift2008.jpg

All mounted up.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/PB040235.jpg

Here's the lines going to the block.

All done.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/mt_drift2026.jpg

The project was alot of fun but went over budget. I ended up spending almost 600 bucks but all the parts are the best on the market. Setrab oil cooler and several trips to Earls added up quick. As for the performance I could'nt be more happy. The car runs cool with the temp needle just alittle lower than before. During runs the needle will go up to normal but never goes past the mark. You get what you pay for and I'm glad I spent the dough.

s13coupedrfter
11-30-2007, 11:18 PM
Here's the 5 lug swap, I used z32 rear hubs and Ichiba front s13 bolt on hubs. The 5 lug conversion was pretty straight forward unless you decide to use s14 front hubs then your going to have to drill/enlarge the holes on the coilovers that mount to the spindle and get s14 control arms (or install the s14 ball joint on s13 arms). For the rears I removed the axles to get access to the 4 bolts holding the wheel bearing. Then remove the brake assy/rotor. Once removed they should pop right off.

For the front you have to remove the brake assy/rotor then pop off the axle nut cap to get access to the axle nut. Remove the cotter pin and nut, wheel bearing will slide off the spindle with ease. Installation is snap, slide the Ichiba wheel bearing/hub on (don't forget the washer) and torque nut to 120 ft-lbs.

If your wondering which rotors to use I used s14 5 lug rears and the 95 maxima fronts (only if you have the jdm 180sx front brake swap) other wise use s14 front rotors.

what kind of wheels do you have on your S13?

s13coupedrfter
12-15-2007, 06:32 PM
I had sport max 002's 16x8 0 offset for awhile but the new wheels are 17x9 22/25 offset Lineas. Yesterday I installed 15mm ichiba spacers on all 4 corners and it looks sick. Also, I'm almost done finishing the body kit and will have pics soon. Happy holidays to everyone, thanx for checking out my post.

s13coupedrfter
02-28-2008, 10:31 AM
It's a uras knock off with 25mm front and 30mm rear over fenders. I sanded the inner lips to get an extra 5-10mm. I'm going to use 25mm spacers for the front wheels so the new offsets will be:

Front- 17x9 +5 offset 235/40/r17 -4 degrees camber
Rear- 17x9.5 -21 offset 235/40/r17 -1 degree camber

My battle with blow-by has been won with my victory! If you look on page #2 post #42 you will see my old set-up with the catch can. That was a vacume style set-up. I added that due to oil being sucked into the intake track and blowing spy hunter smoke out the tail pipe during high RPM driving. After I added the can I was still getting blow-by.

rb25det have a restrictor plug to reduce vacume which I had left out, thats why I was still getting blow-by even with a catch can (oil was being literally sucked out the head and overflowed the catch can). I then had a buddy machine out a plug with a 1/8th hole drilled in the center to reduce vacume. Poof I was still getting blow-by...fuck! Finally I realized there was another line on the intake side valve cover that goes directly to the intake manifold. Upon inspection there was no oil residue inside the line but with no restictor it doesnt help my situation.

After looking in HyperRev mag for gts-t Skylines I finally decided on a breather style set-up. There are many examples of breather set-up's in that mag and seems to be the set-up of choice. I will pull no vacume but any +/-pressure in the case will now be vented out through the filter on the can. The can I am using is a modified Circuit Sports can with a pipe welded on top for a breather filter.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/shanescrap003-1.jpg

As for the line on the intake side valve cover I had a plate welded in place to seal it off. The port on the manifold is plugged as well.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/s13coupedrfter/shanescrap002.jpg

For the finished result this is a effective breather set-up, not only does it clean up the engine bay but it also keeps the intake track oil free.

well the swap looks sweet and so does the car...while looking thru i was hoping you woulda kept it flat black but with the nicer rims i think i like the gloss just as much. either way the car is awesome and definitely gave me ideas on where i wanna go with my cars power plant. +1

It's funny how many people wish I kept it flat black. Actually, when I got the flat black done I was shooting for a bit more glossy look, like the Krylon semi-flat black. Maybe someday I'll do another project with the same color. I always thought an fc TII with the Msport kit would look sick with semi-gloss black.

yeah well most people just call semi gloss flat black but you are correct there is a huge difference. im going for the ratrod kinda color which is more satin black or semi... imo flat black looks too dry i feel like the paint is thirsty

either way it looks good
