I drive the living shit out of my car every single day and the biggest problem Ive ever had was I needed to refill my AC so that it would blow cold again.

ya, i think its only your machanic, if they did there job right the first time it should run for a long time if well maintained. i havent had any problems with my car in 4 months and have probably put 10,000 hard miles on my car since then.

They are nissans.... Not the top of the reliability chart to START with. 10-18 years later they sure as hell won't be the most reliable thing on the street.

i've owned four 240's over the years and haven't had any problems out of any of them. i'd beat on them daily and they never gave me any shit. i think some people just don't take care of their cars until shit starts going wrong.

I guess it mostly depend on how the previous owner was with his car !!! (obviously)
If you buy it from a seventeen year old, chances are you are gonna have alot of problem (fuckin big mistake i did, fuel pump, water pump, ps pump, ball joints(3, yes 3, all in front !!!), tie rods(2), calipers (2), transmission oil seals (2), e-brakes cables, fan clutch, knock sensor.... in a year !!!)
So well yeah you're not alone... but once you take care of it, it should be good (hopefully !!!)

Indeed you will, hahahahaha seriously before you go so strongly dissing Nissan. Nissan actually is right up there in the reliability department. I have driven Nissan's all my adult life and they have been completely reliable.
Fact is if you own a car and don't maintain it i.e regular maintenance, its going to fall apart and become unreliable. Thats a fact, no matter what brand it is.
I can personally say, I drove the piss shit out of my Hardbody truck for 9 years all over the city of San Francisco up and down hills and whatnot doing delivery with it for 3 of those years. I changed a couple of starters and one clutch. I drove it socal sold it and its still on the road.
My current S13 daily I bought last January not even running right. Fixed that up right quick and proceed to drive it to the bay area and back . That was 10k miles ago and five trips to the bay area and back. I am about to take it on its 6th trip in the morning. I put 24k on my last daily my old Gun Metal Super Hicas car in a year and a half and 7 trips to the bay area and back. I sold the fucker and year and a half later the guy I sold it to sold it again with the same damn engine! It had 230k on it at the time. It has a SR in it now lol.
Its this simple you buy a car thats mechanically decent you take care of it it will run a long time. Nissans are right up there with Honda and Toyota in the longevity department. Oh wait some of you are to young to realize that Honda was very late to the game and the premier quality Japanese cars were
Toyota and Nissan.
If you think Nissan's are that unreliable then you should just sell your car and shoot yourself. Go ahead get all emo about it.
The car is only as good as the the person who maintains it.

fucking right, mine are just nagging problems, I just passed emissions with super duper readings, and it runs like a champ, all of a sudden today my car just started stalling at idle, I just seafomed the aiiv, and egr stuff, stalling again! and my CEL has been on for like a year, 32 EGR malfunction, hate it. I'm looking into removing it now that I passed smog in the great CA. So just nagging problems, yeah She'll be 15 yrs. old this year, next year she'll be legal!!! haha

08-30-2007, 10:08 PM
id say it depends who used it and how they maintain it. if you got your car from some kid who doesnt know shit about cars and all they care is try to drift and drift. that car needs to get checked out. i have some couple of probs on my car. 230k on the clock.... got it for $500 LoL not
bitching about it.

I've been daily driving my POS S14 since 2002. I beat on it daily and the only thing I had to fixed changed was brake pads, tires, and all the other maintenance parts. I've been waiting for the KA to blow for the last year, but it still going strong. You just have bad luck dude.

Although it is "up there" with toyotas and hondas, it isn't THERE. I maintain all my cars very well. In fact, i change the oil TOO often(every 2k. miles or trackday). I'm not saying they are HORRIBLE, but FROM MY EXPERIENCE, toyotas and hondas are MORE reliable... I beat the living piss out of my first honda for 3 years!!! Basically did nothing to it but change a seal and change oil...
Driving the nissan the same way or NOT AS HARD....Gone through 2 motors, a tranny, and more... Again...its part of the game...but I strongly disagree that Toyotas/Hondas should even be placed in the same category of reliability as NISSANS.... NO WAY>

Fun and great when they work... but they always have there little quirks, and most a jury rigged here and there in some form.
Now we just need Harrison Ford to pick up an S-chassis.

Man u've gone through 2 motors and a trans in how long?????? What the hell are you doing to your car? I've been beating the hell out of my 240 motor for 3 years now, it has 175000 miles and the only major repair was a head job and that wouldn't have been necessary if I would have checked the coolant regularly (water pump had a slow leak). From my experience a well maintained 240 is just as bulletproof as a honda or toyota.

hey
dont blame us because your car is a rolling disaster.
if you want to do something about it, learn to work on it and maintain it.
any car can be a pile of shit if its not properly maintained, especially a pile of shit that is over a decade (or two) old

other than mine leaking out a few drops of oil daily from the oil pan... i've had no problems
my mom uses the nissan hardbody trucks on her postal route. she's owned about 8 of them over the years.. most were the SOHC 2.4.. she has a 02 now with a dohc.. pretty much the same thing as a 240sx with a different intake manifold.. she beat the piss out of them till 200K and had minimum problems.. mostly tranny.
nissans are pretty tough.. just gotta take care of them.

this is true, we are driving older cars here. but once all the annoying little things get fixed and old parts get updapted the 240 is a pretty tough and reliable machine. ive had no issues for about a year now (not including small minor 5 minute fixes....light bulbs, chaning old fuses, replacing old rusty bolts, etc. i really    my 240!!

yeah i have spent sooooo much money on my S13 getting it fixed, but then again i got it in a baaaaad condition. aftre that its been fine. just recently got an sr, only problem was the tps. been runnin like a champ ever since. but now it is in the air getting a suspension overhaul. i beat mine up when it had the ka and never had a problem 169k. i tried to blow it up. well didn't try to hard. but damn near close to it. i got my S13 blacktop sr in june of 05 and have put only about 10k-12k miles on it :D and now i got an S14 thats only has a few problems that need fixing: its an auto, some wheels and tires, better suspension, more power! but it has only 41K miles on it so i'm not gonna give in to the modding demons anytime soon :D

lol, I've had the opposite experience. Had all sorts of problems with the sohc. Since I went SR, 3.5 years of smooth sailing. Except for the turbo-to-manifold bolts like to loosen up every 8 months to a year, but that's it.

when i 1st got my 92, i got it for 600 with a salvage title. never did figure out why it was salvage but i LOVED that car. took my 3 months to get it on the road with a clean title and when i did, i beat the living crap out of it every chance i could :D
never had any serious problems with it besides the mysterious overheating thing. never really figured that out. i was always trying to bleed the air out of the coolant but it never really fixed it... but yea i loved that car and it never really had problems. and you better believe i beat the crap out of it. now its my friend's and has an SR in it.
my 91 never had 1 problem except that it was ugly as crap from being crashed all up by the previous owner. i parted that out.
the 89 that i currently have, is a pos. i bought it with a blown timing chain for 100 dollars. i got another motor... all that crap. put it all in. got it running. and now the clutch is being ghey/. havent really figured it out yet, might be the transmission falling apart. but anyway, i have spare trans laying around so pretty soon ill be drivin this baby with the z31 turbo i put on. this will be my 1st sohc 240sx. i doubt it will have too many probs except for boost related things since this is my 1st time doing my own boost setup from scratch.

people who can't handle basic mechanical or troubleshooting issues on 240sx and have so many complaints should just buy a Pontiac soltics. or that Saturn pile of shit.
RWD, forced induction, good to go.
they even have mechanics who work on it for you! under a warrantee ?! think of that
