Ok so...I sold my S14 and moved my family to Sasebo, Japan. I have been here for a few days now and was wondering, what's the best way to buy a car in Japan? There are several people here on base that are selling their cars but no one has anything that I would want. Any of you other military types have a way to get the cars you want out in town? I don't speak Japanese so going to a dealer is somewhat difficult. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

you should make friends with someone here that lives in japan and see if they would take you to buy a car, and translate. good luck and let us know what you get.

some of the dealers on goo-net speak English. look hard and you may find what/strike gold.
If you had posted earlier, i may have been able to direct you to one of my friends who was visiting who himself and his lady are able to translate/help... but he's gone now.
how much are translators these days?

Your only hope is to find someone that can help you. Don't really know what else to say, seeing that the only way you can find something you want is to go out in town and look around.

Thanks for the advice. A friend of mine from work has a Japanese wife. Maybe I'll ask her to help me out.

Since your close to a Military base, find a dealer that caters to americans. But when I say caters, i mean would butt-rape you with no vaseline. Unless thats just an Okinawan thing...

hehe...not just an Oki thing. There is a car sale coming to the base next weekend but I'm told that not only do they rip you off, but they only have cars like Accords, minivans and non-turbo skylines. I found someone selling a 95 180 on base for $2k with a few nice mods. Maybe I'll go that route and save a pile of cash. We'll see.

Damn it people didn't your boot camp instructors teach you anything.
Never buy cars from dealers within 5 miles of a base.
Their there to ass rape you.
But on the real. The best thing to do is to wait till someone pcs or just make friends at the command and ask them to see if any of their friends are selling their cars.
I got ass raped by that dealership next to gate 2 kadena. Wow I was such a noob then.

the one i'm looking at isnt stock. some of the mods are Kei Office coilovers, blitz BOV, greddy FMIC, and some others. Those parts alone are worth more than he's selling the car for. The body is straight but could use a little love.

I'd say purchase the car !!! Those are some nice mods for 2k ... but make sure it has the JCI (Japanese Compulsory Insurance). That shit gets really expensive when it expires. And whatever mods you got under the hood ... make sure that you'll be able to pass base inspection. I found that it is a lot easier to buy a car on base that has a "Y" plate already. No hassles. Trust me. But do stay away from those dealerships near the base.
Take some pics and do share so we can check it out !!!

It is def. in your best interest money wise to buy a car that is on base, has all of the BS inspections, and most of all...already has a Y plate. It is a royal PIA to get it registered from regular kanji plate to Y. Good luck with it! and welcome to Japan.
