Well i just got my 90 240 coupe yesterday :2f2f: and one of the issues and as to why i got a deal on it is the speedo dont work was told that just the speed sensor on the trans neded to be replaced, so i went to nissan earlier and got the quote and then was told that was typically half the prob in my situation so has anyone dealt wit this that could shed some light on this for me cuz right now i feel like nissans just turnin me upside to shake out all the lose change
thanks Jade

What do you want to hear. If it dosent work then fix it. Did you call around and get multiple quotes. They arent the only ones that sell them. Also try and find a used one.
or your HUD could be fukked. thats the other half.
hard to say with so little info

havent had much time to call around had to work to specify my needle is constantly pinned and while im driving will start raising up backwards to about 95 (speedo only goes to 115) if i let off throttle it'll drop back down

had the same problem in my 97, worked when i bought the car, 2 days after it just dead, when im going freeway speed, the speedo just goes crazy and bounce up to 80, i replace the speed sensor in the tranny and still no luck, might be the cluster itself.

i had that prob in my 89 when i got it. i put in the speedometer that matched my new engine (74k miles) and that didnt fix it. so then i put in the speed sensor from my 91 trans and that fixed it! about a 10 minute job!

happened to me as well. on my sr tranny. just check your connections. but just goto the junkyard and five finger discount a speed sensor and try it out. save your money and do it yourself. if thats not it then its yours cluster or fuses.

I assume your engine is a stock SOHC engine, if so you probably just have a failed speed sensor, or you have a SR20DET engine in a 89-90 SOHC chassis.
Well if you need a S13 manual trans speed sensor I have one for $60

With all due respect to the posters above, please read my post carefully as it contains correct information:
1) the VSS is the same across all S13 with E, DE, or SR, provided they are all manual. The transmission gearset is the same.
2) The speedo/odo combo is known to go bad very easily on S13. The cheap fix would be to get a used speedo/odo from the junkyard.
3) The VSS rarely goes bad. It's just a sensor that spins and generates a signal.
Here's your best options:
1) Check all your fuses underhood and underdash. Make sure the accessories are running correctly. Typically an inop speedo due to a bad fuse would result in other stuff not working as well because they are tied together in the same circuit.
2) Pull the VSS harness located near the fuel filter. Check with a multimeter. The 2 pins should read 200-300 Ohms.
3) Swap out the cluster with a known-good. See if somebody locally can help you out.
What is the speedo doing?

threadjack!
^^ hmm i should try that multimeter idea. my speedo works, but its just really slow.... and no its not the car. by the time i get to about 70 it almost stops working. and when im fully stopped, the needle takes about an extra 10 seconds to get back to 0...
its done this with 2 speedos :mepoke:
