I bought this 91 Toyota Cressida last year and sold it 3 weeks after I got it. I never got a change to register the car under my name and sold the car with the old pink slip I got from the previous owner.

Today in the mail I got a notice for a parking ticket and I got a notice from the police saying the car was towed.

I don't have any information of the guy I sold it to. Do I have to pay for this ticket and all the towing fees? What else can I do?

Any advice would be great, thx!

Do you have any receipts saying you sold the car?

BTW- that was an extremely dumb thing to do. IMO.

If the buyer has no receipt for the purchase of the car then go get it and pay the fines and re sell it.

^^ yup, apparently its your car now, if he didn't register it. And if he doesn't pay the fines to get it out, it should be your car.

you're responsible for the ticket.
after you sell a car, you're automatically supposed to transfer liablility. for this reason exactly.

* this can be done online.

and to transfer it, you need the miles, cost, and the buyers AND sellers info.

the same thing happened when i sold one of my old CRXs...the new owner didnt register the car in his name right away, he had gotten the car impounded and i recieved a letter in the mail saying that all i had to do was pay $200 and i could get the car back....

LEGALLY...u CAN pay for the ticket/towning and take the car back, because it is the new owners responsibility to register the car in his name ASAP (what you should have done) but u could do what nassin31spr said and re-sell the car

i also have a problem similar to the orignal poster's.

i recently purchased a car and he didnt have a pink slip but i have a bill of sale (and his cell phone has been disconnected). i went to the DMV, got a title-less transfer form, aparently you need the seller's information (which i have) and his signature, but when i spoke with a different DMV worker she informed me that a bill of sale is enough to tranfer the car. i plan on going back to the dmv and trying again, or at least register the car as non-op and not drive it until this is settled. i will do whatever i need to do to register this car under my name but any information would be a great help.

and if the original poster would rather keep this thread solely on his subject then please just ignore this post, (i simply did not want to make a new thread to clutter up the forum, and it didnt occur to me to ask for advise here until i saw this thread)

THX for the advice. I got a permit kind of thing from DMV to get the car back and I will go to the police dept to get the car tomorrow.

My question is will I have trouble later if the guy who bought my car wants to car back? I don't have his information but he does have the old pink slip.

the guy would more than likely give you hell. if he wont give back the title, and if the vehicle is currently registered to you, go there " www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/formsmost.htm ".

download/ fill out neccesary parts REG 227(appl. for duplicate Title) & 256(statement of facts).

put down that you lost teh title. then turn it in with a current registration card. if teh car isnt registered to you then get a REG 135(bill of sales) and turn everything in with that.

*do this only if the guy wont give you back the title.*

i had to register some cars with lost titles for my workplace a few times. thats what the ISA workers ask for so it should be good for privateers as well.

Im confused....so did you transfer the title to your name? and just not register it?

if you didn't transfer the car to your name then how in the hell did the cops know where to send the letter to? This sounds kinda fishy to me.
