I removed all the carpet from my s13 hatch, now i want to remove that hideous hardened pad shit. i was wondering if there is an easy way to get it off. any help would be great thanks.

the method i used was a heat gun and a scraper, it was actually pretty easy, but i did hear that using dry ice made it so simple. next time search though its been covered plenty of times and good luck.

dry ice takes like 45 min.

or use a chisel and hammer, and a weekend.

ya, I have done both methods and dry ice is the way to go! just take a chunk of the dry ice place it on a area and break it up with a hammer and let it sit for min. then get to an edge and try to pry it up...

With much skill and dedication! Dry ice easiest cleanest. Smash it up like snow spread. Works faster than leaving big chunks around.

Ive done it many different ways and dry ice is the best. I get if from the chemical supply shop(Roberts Oxygen) and i hear some supermarkets have it.

I used a heat gun and a paint scraper + bug & tar remover to get the residue off. If dry ice breaks it off without leaving any residue, I'd use that instead

Dry Ice method is the easiest method. Either one will do. Here's a link you can check out how to steps I found couple months ago. Theyre honduh links but it helps.

Heatgun method:

Thats amazing that this question was just asked cause I have been wanting to remove it for weight reduction. I was looking at it today wondering how to get rid of it. I will do the dry ice and let you guys know how it turns out. Word on the street there is 54 pounds of it in the car.

why are you removing it?

performance?

Did your mom drop you on your head?

50 pounds is a damn good decrease in weight, about 1.8% in fact. It all adds up.

Yeah you can get it at some supermarkets, I've gotten it from Raleys in the past.

no its not its fucking stupid.

it makes your car noisery and it will have no impact at all on performance.

everyone on here is poor so whatever makes you feel better about your car.

it adds up if your removing everything under the dash, the heater core, the AC, swapping body panels for wieght and possibly adding lexan

its a race car mode, is more often done in racing to allow for propper mounting points for caging.

dry ice burns so be careful

also -1 for a noisy car

so uncomfortable..

steve shadows is right.

Unless you're making this into a track only car (and you might) don't remove your sound deadening material.

Road noise gets real annoying, real quick.

Unless you need to remove it to do some stitch welding I would advise against it.

I removed mine a while back, and I found that it amplifies the sound of your exhaust in the cab. Not only that, but when it rains, you can hear everything. Like the water is splashing through the wheel wells. It sux.

Yeah I dont recommend it unless its a race car. Its not worth taking it out. I suggest driving in someones car that has it removed and notice the difference. Dry ice is the way to go though.

i hate road noise on my dd.

I did two cars with just chisel and hammer.

Gotta try the dry ice method.

It's fucking loud in the car.

Not the greatest if the car is your DD.

I'm just used to it.

Take off the sound deadening, then put back the full interior...sounds like a genius move to me....

It's annoying with it removed... you hear everything. Ask me how I know. lol

My 240 is a track/sometimes DD car and my interior is stripped. The weight you save makes no difference, and the car becomes that much more un-streetable. It's not worth it.

Noisier is the word you're looking for.

Yes, it does make the car noisier, and I've driven mine for about 30k like that.

Earplugs are the key, I've found. You can still hear traffic noise but the resonance of the body structure is greatly muffled. I drove from Fallbrook to Sacramento in mine and I'm not deaf.

My car is street- and track-driven and weighs less than 2250lbs. I do have a lightweight battery, hood, and trunk lid but the rest was done on the cheap. If it is free and it can increase acceleration, handling, and braking then why the hell not? Comfort is for when you get a cubicle.

If you think it makes no difference, then you're just not driving hard enough.

oh well thank you for fucking enlightening me ill drive "harder"

or i could just add 1.5 psi of boost on my stupid oversized turbo that everyone hates on , on here and make up for 300 lbs.

what did you do to make your car so light while were on the subject? in all respect.

and do you have wiegh slip that you can post or scan so I can belive you.

I wouldnt mind losing another 250 lbs.

I think all the dumb top mount garbage i have supporting my "dumb" oversized turbo has added un-needed wieght

I was going to make a write up for this, this weekend for the premies. I think this is more for looks than performance unless the car is getting a cage or stitch welded.

not to go off topic but would this method work on dynamat as well?

I got a shell and its already for the tack weld.
Hard part was done I would of like to do it myself though.

I'd be interested in seeing how much of a difference eDead makes on a car with no sound deadening... this is what all the SQ Competition cars I've worked on have had applied (works well with full interior):

http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=53

$50 retail for a gallon, easily coats the entire interior, and weighs about 15lbs.

I'll probably do it. I like cheap things that can make a big diff.

Will that work? I was thinking about doing the same thing on my daily, but i heard dynamat only stops vibration, so it wont affect road noise too much.

I weighed the tar that came out of the Green/Silver. Negligible. 50 ish pounds, and you are taking it out of somewhere you actually could use the weight, even distributed across the floorpan, keeping the center of gravity lower.

But.

F that. Science, inertia, newton, einstien.

When you need to modify something next to free, and waste a whole day doing it, do that. Its awesome for trailer queen show cars, especially when you can repaint the cabin, otherwise, pull all the dirt, and extra wires out, replace the carpet and leave it "as-is". I never realized how much a POS a hollowed out S series is until the laddies jumped at the chance to ride in the alfa chariot.

KA24DESOneThree
08-30-2007, 10:58 AM
John... you like to take laddies for rides?

To respond to the "for looks" thing: trust me, a car with no sound deadening in the interior does not look tits. It looks like someone went nuts spraypainting over randomly shaped cardboard cutouts then threw molasses through chickenwire. Even cleaned up it looks like ass unless one repaints the entire interior.

I have a couple posts in the "how much does your car weigh?" thread:
http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=121723&page=2

I have no weigh slip because I weighed it myself on cornerweighting scales at my previous place of employment. Obviously I could have messed up and bound the scales due to their lack of rollers, leading to an incorrect reading, but that is what they told me. I have since lost more weight.

If you're all really interested, I'll find somewhere to have my car weighed with a printout.

When people are doing several hundred dollar cf hoods and stuff to shave 20 pounds, 50 pounds for the cost of dry ice sounds like a pretty good deal to me...

DrFelix

I did this just the other day, and I seriously doubt it added up to 50lbs, more like 20. Still worth it though.

Beware though, all the sound deadening that's on top of seam sealer isn't going to want to come up. Or at least for me. I think ill have to heat gun those spots.

those spots being under the dash and where the floor meets the rear seats.

did a hammer and chisel... it makes your car looks super fugly in the inside if you dont clean up the residue. it also takes a lot of time doing it this method.

dry ice breaks the tar mat in larger patches so there is less residue left over. i recommend dry ice.

like everyone else said, if its a track car.... do it, else bring some ear muffs
