I wonder what the speed limit was on that particular road?
Certainly not 172mph, I'm sure.
Have fun in jail!

I like how the article is written with a humorous undertone, haha. They should let him off for breaking the record.

Lol he was going 172 and got caught. He was british, so of course he pulled over. This is how it all went down:
Cop: "I'm terribly sorry sir, but you were going slightly over the speed limit back there"
Driver: "I, too, am terribly sorry. I was speeding, and I shouldn't have been."
Cop: "Quite alright. Well then, im terribly sorry but I'm going to have to take you down to the station"
Driver: "Thats quite alright. I'm terribly sorry for having caused you this inconvenience."
Cop: "Right-o then. Say cheerio to your auto"
Driver: "Cheerio, auto!"
lol stereotypical brits are fun.

I've been there before.
^Yup me to... both jail and 170+. :) Seperate occasions. Depending on the car, road and time of day 170mph is really a non event and boring to be honest. A 4 lane straight as an arrow highway at 0330 am = air strip. Just make sure you have a car with enough balls and brakes. 80mph in the windy hills can be far more dangerous. 90mph on the same hwy in a shit box at 12 noon would be far more dangerous. I have only got one ticket and that was in my truck going 10mph over tops. Fucking cops, go get some drug dealers or something.
didnt a guy in texas get busted for going like 230+ in a koenigsegg?

Driving fast keeping up with a Porsche 911 GT2 cuz you know they got a built in radar detector down I-5 from Oakland to LA in 3.5 hours with your AVC-R showing you hit 273km/h isnt fun at all....

yeah i have hit 174 in a friends audi, but it was at liek 2 am on the 99 north from bakersfield to fresno, it was just to see what the car would top out at, but the twin turbos were still pushin out power, the road just curved a bit ahead so i had to slow down.
what confuses me, is how the hell do you get caught?
i mean you know the police cruiser was a pathetic little euro four cylinder and should never of had a chance to catch the guy.
thats like mike vic getting caught in a foot race buy an overweight 40 year old. its not goign to happen and if it does, its pathetic.
but on the whole street racing is stupid. ( and yes i know going 170+ is stupid too, but it was only once, and it wasnt when there was traffic present, we didnt pass any cars on the high speed run either)

he should have just gone to the autobahn and wait for that part of the road where there is no speed limit and then he wouldnt be in that particular predicament.
but dman 172.....but yeah i thought there was a koeniggsegg that was caught at 240.
after a little info retrieval, yes......in texas back in 2003 one of the gumball drivershad one and did 242. got caught, went to jail, car got inmpounded. co-driver paid bail, got car out of impound. they drove away, noticed smoke, realized while at impound they stole the oil cap. they went to a vw dealer, bought a bug and oil. went back to car, filled with oil, took cap off bug and pout it on (both cars use the same cap.....LMAO) proceeded back on with the race, left the bug on the side of the road, doors open with key in it.....once again...LMAO.
here's the source....good ole wiki.

^being that there is no street car capable of going faster than 242, with the exception of i believe the veyron......i think it's safe to say that, that 242 koenigsegg is the fastest anywhere.

This is the fastest I saw on the net, 205 on a bike
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0922042speed1.html
I would think theres someone out there in a old muscle car that could have destroyed that.
people who say driving fast in a straight line have never driven or been in a really fast car (like 600hp+)
that shit is NUTS

a LOT of the old muscle cars topped out at like 150, they were allll about acceleration, not top speed. also, would you want to go 200 miles an hour in a 40 year old car? A non built chevelle would start disintegrating at that speed.
