Hey, I was wondering if you guys had any good suggestions for a winter car/truck. I moved to a smaller town recently and can't use the transit system while my car is parked for the winter.
I live in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta so we get a decent amount of snow out here. Most my driving will just be around town and possibly to the mountains for some snow boarding. I'm looking for something around the $5K or less.
Thanks for any ideas.

A 240 that isn't slammed and doesn't have a cheap knock-off fiberglass aero kit should work just fine. Throw a rack on top to haul your boards and you're set.
Drive it all winter, get the body full of ice and road salt, then sell it on eGay to some dumbass drift bandwagoneer.
See it all the time.

get an older legacy outback. awd, lots of room, decent mileage, not an suv, cheap!
or you could get a sedan...

eh screw it....when all else fails get a moped...if Harry and Lloyd (dumb and dumber) can do it through the rockies, you sure can.....just tow your board behind you and go anywhere for the price of a gallon of gas....haha....j/k...

Get a dang Subuaru. You can pick em up cheap. Personally I wouldnt want a truck just because of 0 weight being on the backend...Unless it was awd which you can find the ol Toyota "pickups" as awd.

Rocky Mountain House... Oh man, I drove by there once. The highway there looked soooo perfect. I wanted to tear it up in my car. This was on a school trip though. Hahaha. Did have a pretty sweet hike into a cave though. Good shit.
Winter car? 240 is super fun with good winter tires...If I could though I'd get an AWD car though. Probably a better idea.

Sorry for taking so long to get back. Work has been busy lately. Thanks for the suggestions though. I will have to check out some Subies. Definately won't find one in this town unless I get really lucky so probably end up searching around Edmonton and Calgary.
I did a bit of driving in my 240 this past winter when I had to move out here, but the cabin just wouldn't heat up. Decent heat coming out of the vents. Maybe my doors don't seal properly

Almost what I was gonna suggest. I'm in a similiar climate and I'd like to get a older 2.5 RS. The cool body style ones. I think those are first gens.

You can always buy a 4x4 or do what I'm going to do jack the vehicle up as high as possible without making look ugly then throw some sand bags in the back and your good. You probably lower your suspension life but hey its better and its cheaper. lol

Older AWD subaru's are cheap and reliable. Everything your looking for in a winter car. Big trucks and SUVs are great if you're using them for what they're intended for: hauling alot of people/cargo. If its just you and maybe another person, you don't need a huge truck.
Get a 92-94 awd legacy, some come stock turbo and are <$2000.

4x4 f150 with several sandbags or cinder blocks in the back. if you have narrow spaces/roads/whatever to traverse, then make it a 4x4 ranger. just don't fag it out with a bed cover or any other nonsense. be a man.
