OK so I got all the bolts off the exhaust manifold except the two on the bottom in the center. How do you get those out? I tried using a box wrench but they are so tight and a socket doesn't fit in there. Other thing how do you reinstall the studs cause two of them came out instead of the nut loosening up. Thanks in advance for the help.

when i was doing mine i just used an extension and a deep socket 14 i think it was. after that you just gotta do it. as for reinstalling studs try pb blaster to get the nuts off the stud or you could just put it back in like that. iono its kinda ghetto though

Stubby wrench + patience. And to get the nut off of the stud, use 2 nuts on the other end, tighten against each other, remove the one that was stuck. Then do the opposite to thread it back into the head.

When I put the studs back in should I use some red threadlock or something or just put them in there dry?

yeah i just took mine off too, i didn't have any problems, except only one of the studs came out, but it went right back in, umm if you plan on taking the studs out anytime soon, use high heat anti seize i guess? like the other guys said on the stock manifold, the box wrench did the trick. i'm not sure why you're having problems. make sure you clean the mating surfaces with acetone if you're replacing the gasket you don't want shit in there to prevent a tight seal.

I had to do this when swapping turbo's. Good luck.

get an swivel head (elbow to some people) and a shorty 14mm, use a 5" extension and go from the bottom.

Bumping old thread. I got every single bolt of except one bolt. The bolt on the passenger side closest to the firewall. I removed the stock oil catch can and still can't get into it..
(part a) i can't remove that bolt on top of that gasket illustrated.

I've taken mine off probably 5 times. Every time the same studs are in the head and the same studs are always not in the head.
I always assumed that the 4 innermost holes are studs that remain in the head and the 4 outermost are studs with lock nuts on them that you put INTO the head.
Either way, you can get to those hard-to-reach ones with a closed end wrench, just doing little tiny turns until you can use your fingers.

i can't get it with a closed 13, i tried stubbys also and still won't fit.. Maybe my hands are just too big.. i need to replace my gasket asap and that one bolt isn't letting me.. the arrow is the one that's giving me truoble.

Liar!!!!!!!!!!!
You kept saying exhaust manifold, so I thought you meant exhaust manifold---->
But you are talking about exhaust manifold------>turbo?
FUCK THAT SHIT!
I would never try to take the turbo off the manifold without having them both out of the car.
Way too hard....better off just taking the manifold off and disconnecting from the downpipe and pull the whole deal out

Agreed, it wont happen with the exhaust manifold on the engine.
