View Full Version : How much did your paint cost?

For those of you who have had your cars painted, what brand of paint did you get, how much did you buy, and how much did it cost?
I have a quote of $350 for PPG paint for an OEM Nissan metallic pearl paint code, and it includes the clear and all, but not primer (I think). Does that sound a little high, good price, or average? I just don't want to get ripped off and I have no idea what the going price is.
Thanks.

Less than $45 to do the whole car, but it looks like crap, and I don't recommend it to anyone.

He's supposed to be getting a deal on the PPG paint through a connection, and the guy is painting it for me as a side job so it's all supposed to be a good deal. He works at the Nissan port repainting cars damaged in transport, so basically he's on a union-forced vacation right now.
I've already paid $500 for on-the-side body work on pretty much every panel on the car.
WV2 Diamond Graphite is metallic w/o pearl...is that cheaper? Ahh, you said wholesale.
I told myself I'd never own another pearl paintjob car...

It cost me about 150$ to get white paint, hardener, thinner, blah blah blah at some paint supply store.
Rainbow flake from house of color was like 65$
Now... all I need is to actually get the paint ON THE CAR

I got the cheapest black paint i could get, the cheapest primer i could get and i had an army friend paint it for me giving him 3 guns i got for free and a pack of newports...
and it came out good. I still gotta wetsand and get some clear on it (cheapest shit, again) but it'll turn out better than any maaco paintjob ive seen lol.
But my car is worth a whole 200 bucks. If you want a good paintjob, get a professional to do it, and fork over the 2500 or so.
oh yeah www.paintforcars.com (http://www.paintforcars.com). I had a friend get some paint from them, and it turned out REAL nice. Pretty good quality paint for how cheap it is. He got the bright red. 1982 Camaro with a 305 crate engine bored .30 over, a few bucks worth of mods, mated to a 4 speed tranny. Something like 390hp to the wheels. Too bad i never got a pic of it.

Flat is the shit, but I decided it's probably not a good idea on my daily driver. You get a light scratch on your shiny paint job, you rub it out. On your flat paint job, you're screwed.

my paint costed me ~700 w/o clear. Thats ppg and my bro who has a shop buying wholesale. A paint job like mine will run 2500 to 3000 depending on the amount of body work. Btw, its pure black with now pearl.

Hot Rod Flatz is the shit! Gallon kit (hardner, reducer, mixing supplies) $140, Quart Clear $30, Quart High-build Primer $40 = $210

But can you rub anything out on a flat/matte/satin clear coat finish without making a glossy spot? Guess you just rub off a thin top layer and it's still matte beneath it, huh? I searched all over the web for info on how you can maintain flat paint, and didn't find anything. Definitely post some pics and let me know how your paint goes.
I like flat on coupes better than hatchbacks anyway. The black trim behind shiny glass on the hatch greenhouse is a little too contrasty with flat paint for me.
I got candy apple red paint, primer, reducer, clear, etc... everything but the actual labor to do the paint job... 50 bucks :D can anyone say HOOOOOOKUP

Well, it depends on the quality of the job. Also, there are more than one line of ppg paint just to let you know. Also, layers and clear coat too. What im trying to say is that unless you know the body shop well, its probably low quality comparing to the cost of paint alone. Most importantly, Ive been at the shop for a while and can see the diff. in quality jobs, if you cant tell then it doesnt matter on anything else, anything will be good. Trust me, you need experience to see the diff. in paint jobs.

As I mentioned earlier, the painter and body guy both work at the Nissan port. They work on brand new Nissans and Infinitis that get damaged on the ship, so they're good because the cars have to look new. I've seen the painter's work on his own car, and it's good. He recommended PPG over DuPont because he likes how it goes on better. He knows what he's doing and he's no half-asser. :)
I'm going back and forth on how much of the interior to paint. He wants to do it all. It's completely stripped except for wiring, under-dash guts/steering wheel, shifter & ebrake handle. But I'm never going to strip it again or make it a racecar. I was thinking just a couple inches into the floor pan and the places where you might pull a corner of the carpet up or something. I'm the perfectionist type though... Argh.

I think if you paint, you should do it all the way. That way, you'd never look back. Also, whats the price diff. if you paint everything. If you ever sell the car, it would be a much stronger selling point to say that the car is one color instead of 2, especially for our cars because a lot of buyers want to make it full time race cars. Lastly, if you were to paint that far into the body, it isnt much more work to paint the whole car, just a bit more sanding, since the paint will just fly over and this will mean that they dont have to tape off anything.
btw, 350 is a heck of a deal for painting a whole car, inside and out. Ask him how many coats he will do and the price for labor, I am very curious.

i over paid for my enigne compartment($800) cause i wanted it done right.. i had them use dupoint and it worksed out great...
if you are painting jsut the out side then a gallon should be fine. I bot a quart for the engine bay and i am buying a gallon for the exterior. however my frend painted the inside of his truck, interior was stripped and painted the hole car in and out every little inch and he bot 2 gallons... so it depends what you do

$550 for outside/door jambs/trunk black with gold flake at Earl Scheib baby! Honestly though, I did it like 8 months ago and I still think that was the best $500 bucks Ive ever spent on my car.

He would have to tape off a lot on the inside - I'm not removing the wiring, HVAC system, firewall sound deadening, etc etc. He hasn't given me a price diff. Since he's doing it all on the side and doesn't know how long it'll ultimately take, I don't think he really knows what he's going to charge me yet. He originally quoted me $800-900 w/ bodywork, but it's going to be more than that since bodywork + paint is already $850.
My car is going to be way too nice to buy for making into a racecar. The interior should never come out again until the car is so old and beat up it's worthless. :) By that time, it'll need to be repainted anyway. haha

Yeah, it's unfortunate my car came with a Chevy Storm Gray engine bay and a Cherry Red Pearl exterior. We swapped in an engine before I even had a Silvia front end, and the color I would eventually want to paint it was only a twinkle in my eye. Painting wasn't even on the radar. It is what it is. At least it's a neutral color.
SCC Project Silvia has a toothpaste green engine bay. Would that keep you from buying it? :bigok:

1,400 bucks at Maaco.......you just have to do some of the prep yourself if you want a decent job from them. remove trim, lights, etc.......
If they like your car, they will do a better job.....sad but true. Otherwise, they dont care and you get overspray on your windows, tires, muffler etc....

That price for PPG sounds pretty good. I bought my PPG paint from a guy at wholesale price but it was the vibrance color series.(which is all their pearl/tri coat colors). I spent $1675 on just the paint at wholesale price.....PPG FTW....

My first paint job was $400 at Earl Schieb. I did all the prep work beforehand so it turned out pretty good. A lot of people just take their cars in with no prep work, expecting a good paintjob only to find it flaking off 3 years from them because of no adhesion. Mine lasted about 2 years and was super shiny after a nice wax, but it chipped easily especially when I pulled my fenders (even after heating up the area).
I would never again get my car painted there ever... unless it was a $800 car, which my first s13 pretty much was...

It was a good car. Just fast enough to have some fun, but not fast enough to get into too much trouble.
