I have read a lot of posts saying that having an SR20 in your car is going to make it emissions illegal. My question is what is the difference in a USDM SR20 as found in the Infiniti G20 and a JDM SR20 as found in one of the latter Silvias? I mean asides from horses what makes one illegal and one legal? If the ponies are the only difference why not get a G20 SR20 and do all the necessary mods and be safely street legal?

The turbo is one of the main reasons.

If you wanna be street legal, then just save your money and keep the KA and drive it.
The positive point of the cost to put the G20 SR in a 240SX is the laughter that you would be getting from others that would be on the floor.
Don't do it, just keep your car stock and walk away.
The G20 is a non-turbo front wheel drive platform, while the Silvia is a turbo rear wheel drive platform.

What makes the silvia SR illegal is that the RWD Turbo variant was never sold on US soil. So they are not NHTSA approved engines. FWD NA SR engines on the other hand are stock to cars in the states.

But is there a great deal of work that would need to go into making a usdm sr20 up to par with a jdm sr20 to make it not worth it?

Yeah, i think the best thing you can do, and be legal, is to build an NA ka. ECU, cams, pullies, hi-comp pistons, aluminum driveshaft and flywheel, I/E/H, the usual. Maybe even ITBs if you wanna be a little extreme with it. Idk how legal that would be in the left side of the country, I live in MO, sorry.

your questions were asked and answered back before the Y2K bug came and crashed your megahurtz. I suggest you take a time machine and travel back to then and find out.
Otherwise, Search, noob!™

stop being a pussy and get a ghetto inspection, find the grimiest shop you can, slip the guy some cash, or find a place by word of mouth, and you will pass inspection. i live on long island, and it's real easy hre. but i'm sure you can find some pleace in virginia too, i've been there, seen some ghetto areas.
