View Full Version : Anyone run amber lights?

Back in the day when people used to race, old skool import car enthusiasts used to wire up their amber lights. If they smoked someone in a race they would turn them on to let the loser know that he got owned. Nowadays people just flash their hazards.
Anyway, I was bored so I wired up the amber lights in my s13 and s14. The factory turn signal socket and bulb in the s13 and s14 (amber lights) has a single filament. It only lights up when you use the hazards or turn signals.
To run amber lights simply swap out that single filament socket and bulb for a double filament socket and bulb (From an s13 in the yunkyard) and hook the extra wire up (Green/White) to a rocker switch on teh console or dash and run power from the cigarette lighter or ash tray light wire. With double filament bulbs the amber lens could stay on and blink at the same time.
I won’t be using them on my stock ka24de powered s13 any time soon but my s14 could use them just in case hehe.

hmm... I'd like to see in person wtf your talking about, LOL..
do you still get to retain the option of "blinking"?

amber lights? bumper signals? sidemarkers?
usdm180sx
08-11-2007, 01:51 AM
Yep. The amber lens stays on when you turn it on via a switch but it gets brighter when you use the hazards or turn signals. The bright filament is the blinker and the dim filament stays lit.
It's like the brake lights turning on when you step on the brakes when your lights are on at night. The red brake lens stays on but it gets brighter when you hit the brakes. I'll show you at the next meet.
The rear amber lights are what you wire up so that people can see them when they get smoked (at the dragstrip, of course haha)

Wait....
What's the point of doing this again?
ricer flash?
Can't you just turn on your parking lights and the "amber lights" will be on?
Did I accidentally log into fucking nico?

lol ^^^ breakin I thought the same thing...
Just flash your hazards. Same shit. Sometimes I like to add a "thumbs down" out the window or sunroof for emphasis.
I do get what your saying though, and yes you can wire in the double filament bulb, just make sure you have the filament that looks like it's "centered" in the bulb as the "constant", and the one off to the side as the "blinker". Otherwise you'll burn the socket/housing/bulb because it'll get too hot.
In all actuality I don't find anyone to race any more, that I would want to race. If you're a Honda, just drive your noisy ass by. If you're a Camaro/Corvette/Viper/Cobra/etc, you won't race me (too much to lose, not enough to gain). It's a vicious circle.

LOL no I did NOT have a NICO moment. People actually used to do this. Read the 1st and 4th posts. I think you're right, Kevin. I AM too fucking old haha

I've seen it done for years, but it's only the ricer kid in a honda who revs up at me and then passes me in traffic and hits them. Like I'm supposed to be impressed that your lane is moving and mine isn't.

Unfortunately you are right. Fortunately the first time I saw them was on old skool 510's and rx-3's.

i somewhat get what your saying and did the same thing with the front signals of my s14. all i did was get some s13 dual filament sockets and wired the blinker the same way, and then spliced the corner parking light so it would be on just like the s13. you can somewhat see it on in the old pic of the s14 i had.
are you talking about the rears? if so nevermind.

LMK we can take a trip to the yunkyard and pick up some double filament sockets. Imagine driving in front of a fanboi then turning on your ambers, hearing a big shotgun "BOOM" then flames coming out of your exhaust. Your shit's gonna be SUPER rad.

people put on their hazards all the time when they race me... because i blow their fucking motors out the sky
and if i dont do that, i make sure they launch their fuckin cars off the canyon and die in a fire-ball hell as they plummet down the mountain in a fiery hell. fuckin assholes.
i hope everyone that races me, or tries to race me, or even THINKS about racing me... instantly dies in a fucking car accident.
now THAT, ladies and gentlemen, would be fuckin AWESOME!!!!#q4325

Well i guess i'm in the older generations...cuz i remember doing this at the street races. We also used the ambers when we were traveling on the freeway at night, if the front lead car saw a highway partrol in front flip the ambers and everybody who was behind slows down.
Great now i feel old...

Are you talking about the turn signals staying in the bright mode when they're on? I've actually thought about doing that with my front ones, I got some really bright bulbs for them and with the clear lenses they're pretty much like fog lights in the bright mode, though I was worried that it could melt the housings since they're made out of plastic.
usdm180sx
08-12-2007, 05:54 PM
The bright filament is for the blinker and the dim filament is for the ambers. If you run them that way the housings won't melt.

Ah yes the simpler times. when "Rockos Modern Life" was actually modern, and when I wanted a Volkswagen Beetle as my first car...
Still wouldn't mind having one...
And if I race anyone, if I win i tap the brakes 3 times.
Who needs amber lights. Shit who needs lights period, I live on the edge... in the daytime.
Other than that, cool thread.

The more I think about it, the more I want them. Not for the street racer status, but it'd be great for the night cruises. (Hazards on through interchanges FTL) Can you post a pic of the dual-filament bulbs/harnesses we need? I've never seen them before. Better yet... write up with pics. :)

Basically a set of brake bulbs+harness off a junkyard car.
