So I got a redtop s13 sr20det and replaced timing chain tensioner. Somehow the chain got misplaced on the crank. I have literally reset the timing chain nine times since then in an attempt to get the chain correct.

Here's how i'm doing it:

Crank set at 2nd mark from the left facing engine.
Exhaust camgear mark in between 12 o'clock and 1'clock with about 8 pins from head. ZERO slack between exhaust camgear and crank.

Intake cam placed as so there is a 20-pin count between both notches on both cam gears.

Then I set CAS to 2nd dot and slide it in so it aligns with first dot to put the motor at 15deg

Put in tensioner, release it, rotate 2 times CCW. Done

Now when I run the car, it shows an advancement of 10degrees past the fucking 15deg mark, and when I rev it, it backfires at the exhaust manifold.

I've called HT and Enjuku and have followed they're procedures exactly. Every time i follow their instructions timing stays advanced. When I try adjusting the CAS one extra tooth either way the car barely runs.

I can't figure this damned thing out and I'm curious if there is something tricky with my motor.

I have three questions:

1) Is there supposed to be zero slack between exhaust cam and crank and is the 2nd mark from the left TDC?

2) Is there any sensor that could have gone bad to have caused this advancement in timing? (i've tried another CAS)

3) Is there anyone experienced in the VA area that would be willing to help me?

Please help. I'm stumped and carless atm.

TY

Heres what my cam gears look like:

UPDATE:

I just reset timing again, a tenth time, with the two silver timing links lined up with the dots on camgears. Then the needle on frontcover aligned with the 2nd notch from the left on the crankpulley. There was no slack from the crank to the exhaust cam.

Results:

Checked timing with tps unplugged and warmed motor, the needle was at about 5 degrees more advanced then the 5th notch on the crank pulley. (about 25 degrees then.)

Car idles perfect. Car drives like shit. The motor sounds very harsh. Def. not metal on metal though.

What the hell can I do?

Have you called Chris? I assume you called Delta V, but I don't know how much help they could be, lol, busy and Jeff hates SR's anyway.

I left my # for mark and he never called back lol. Its hard finding anyone knowledgable of sr20s in the richmond area. I even tried calling chris too.. I think he changed his number.

So i plugged my ecu up and checked bikirom, my timing was at 15 deg exactly.

Checked timing light on my friends stock sr and it was off too.

Solution: timing light sucked

you can put the inductor clip on the wire two ways to give you two different readings, how are you clamping the clip around the spark wire to check timing?

Yeah, diagnostic lead on the coil pack = FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL

Uh, I could have sworn you should be 12 links apart...

Not the best picture.. I don't have my camera so cell phone is all you get...

Its 20 pins apart, no more no less. 12 links would be 24. = very very bad

it goes from intake to exhaust 5, 20, 8 (is the pin count)

You should be turning the motor clockwise, not CCW. Despite that, your cam alignment looks good if you have it properly set to TDC. You most likely have some other ignition problem. Replace everything below with known working components and see if it changes anything.

Coilpacks
ECU
Ignitor
CAS

Why would his coilpacks be advancing his timing 15 degrees?

Did you fuck with the timing map on your ECU?

i've replaced everything with working parts, its the timing light like i said.
