BERLIN – A woman who had a pencil lodged in her head for 55 years after a childhood accident has finally had most of it removed, which should end her chronic headaches and nosebleeds, her doctor said today.

Margaret Wegner was 4 when she fell while carrying the eight-centimetre pencil, which went through her cheek and into her brain.

"It bored right through the skin and disappeared into my head," Wegner, now 59, told Germany's best-selling newspaper, Bild. "It hurt like crazy."

At the time, the technology did not exist to safely remove the pencil, so Wegner had to live with it, and the ensuing chronic headaches and nosebleeds, for the next 5

decades.

But on Friday, Dr. Hans Behrbohm, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Berlin's Park-Klinik Weissensee, was able to identify the exact location of the pencil so that he could determine the risks of removing it, and then took most of it out.

The operation was difficult because of the way the pencil had shifted as Wegner grew, Behrbohm told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

"This was something unique because the trauma was so old," said Behrbohm, who has also done brain surgery to remove bullets from shooting victims and glass from people involved in car accidents.

Although a piece of pencil about two centimetres long could not be removed, Behrbohm said it does not pose a danger.

And now Wegner, the wife of German boxing coach Ulli Wegner, will no longer have the headaches and nosebleeds, and her sense of smell should return soon, Behrbohm said.

"She shouldn't suffer any longer," he said.

All I can say is WoW!
I had a piece of glass stuck in my leg for about 5 years before it finally grew out of me. I didn't even know it was there until it was almost out. I couldn't imagine living with a pencil for 50 years!
What are some things you guys had stuck in you and for how long?

Wow that sucks. I guess thats why my mom told me never to run with anything sharp.

I just think of all that other crazy shit that people have gotten lodged into their brains and lived... Nails, bullets, pipes... I would hate to have cronic headaches and nosebleeds for 50 years AND have no sense of smell. Shes a trooper lol.

Me? Ive had the usual pencil lead bits, splinters and a few other tiny things. I guess the worst thing that i can think of was when I got a needle lodged into my leg. I was sewing a pair of my pants on my bed, and I left the needle in it. I go to bed, and wake up at 2 in the morning with an inch and a half of needle stuck into my calf. Not a pleasent experience.

I had a kid stuck in me for 10 1/2 months, but then it came out. Painfully, I might add.

It was weird, because 3 years later I had the same affliction. Be awful careful where you stick things- it might come out to be something a WHOLE lot different later.
