so im about to buy this shortblock because my block has a hole in it :bite:
im buying it with ARP headstuds and cometic 1.2 86.5 HG...for 500$
now the thing is , the guy doesnt know if the block is good or not but if it isnt , he will give me a full refund...
he said he bought the car with the head off because the previous owner thought he heard something and took it off...so he's unsure if the bearings are bad or what...
should i buy it or not? and if i do...should i just replace the bearings? i dont know , i just want to buy a longblock but the guy is local

:ugh:
Honestly the only thing you need to really worry about would be these worst case senarios:
1. main bearings failed
2. rod bearings failed badly
3. cracnk walk (rare trust bearing on sr issue)
is the short block still assembeled?
Pull the lower oil pan and check for any brass colored or other metal shaving, youll see them if it had any kind of catatrophic failure.
If it was making noise then it was probably rod bearings, you will need a late model oil pickup upgrade, possibly a new crank and rod for the cyl that it failed on.

try to spend another 300 bucks ontop of your 500 just save up.
buy a good condition long block that you know has compression and at the time of sale pull off the lower pan to check for metal shavings.
Have the seller do a compression test in front of you.
This is what i do for all long blocks.
I I keep the long block in stock condition for racing now, I will pull the rod caps and mic the bearings to make sure they are in good shape also.
This requires removing the oil baffle very carefully and having the engine on a stand.
just some thoughts.
Im rebuilding a block of mine next month that ate a rod bearing last season.
I havent had the crank inspected but in my experience (thanks to shty oil pan and early model oil pick up breakage) if you can hear the rod knock from inside the car then the crank and rod are probably scored beyond simple polishing.

you should just by a long block for a few hundred more thats the best option unless your going for a full rebuild

SR cranks don't do well with spun bearings, the two I've worked on were both scored beyond polishing, requiring extensive turning and oversized bearings. In other words, it's a waste of money. If a main bearing spun then you're really fucked, the SR block can't be repaired without welding/milling the damaged area.
Basically either way you're better off looking for a new shortblock that's proven good. Any kind of light damage requires double the money you've got in it just to bring it back right.

open the pan and look at it... if all things check out... knock it down to 250... and rebuild the bottom end. id do that.. its fairly cheap to rebuild a bottom end...
