Ok bought my car as-is I take care of smog. 89 240sx. Replaced the cat, vacuum lines, fixed the exhaust leaks, distributor rotor and cap, plugs, wires, all fluids...pretty much a complete tune up. I cleared the ecu and the CEL 32 came up again..I tested the EGR and it worked. (Used the vacuum test and pushed in the diaphram)....anyways...I looked at my EGR and compared it to my friends...well that sensor that goes into the side of it isn't even there on mine. Just a bolt to block it off. I had my car pretested when the CEL wasn't on and the guy said my car was running rich. He said to check my 02 sensor or my engine temp sensor...granted he didn't know about my EGR CEL....any thoughts?? If that sensor isn't going to affect the way my car runs I won't bother with it..but then again I have to do test only smog since I bought it as a gross polluter and all I know is that it's a move advanced and thorough smog check I think.

The EGR sensor your looking for is only for cars originally sold in California.
You said you checked the EGR but did you actually rev up the motor and feel the EGR valve open up on its own? Lifting up on the valve manually doesn't prove the whole system is functioning.
Also, search around and you will find others that have the same problem and the threads may be able to tell you if a rich condition is a problem with the EGR at all.
If you have a SMOG print out and the values that it gave that would also help a lot.
Best,
Dan

It's a california model. The pretest guy didn't charge me. He told me to check a few things out and bring it back to see if that fixes the problem then he'd have me pay for a full pretest with a printout. I'll search into revving the motor to feel if the valve opens. I haven't found anything on it yet.

Okay, upon revving up the engine once warmed up the egr does open on its own. An 02 sensor is in the mail on it's way. And I noticed that if I wiggle the clip on the engine temp sensor that the idle will fluxuate. I'm going to start looking for an injector clip with a fairly long bit of wiring on it and replace that clip. Are there any other issues I can be dealing with? Does timing do anything at idle? btw the idle seems to be right at 750-800 rpm. Should I drop it about 50 rpm? I need this car running perfectly because I have to do test only smog soon.
