Car will not start...

Car is a 1996 240sx ka24de auto motor completely stock.

It's my girls' and has been driving great, last night we drove quite a bit and even stopped at a gas station about 3/4 of a mile from my apartment. Car turned on like normal and ran fine all the way home.

This morning I was gonna take my girl to work, and the car was just turning over. I figured it was a bad battery since it looked corroded and turned slower than normal. I took the battery to checkers, and auto zone. Both stores confirmed dead battery. I purchased a new one and it cranked over stronger but, still only turned.

It actually smelled like it was flooding but I gave no gas on any of the cranks with the exception of the first before purchasing the new battery. At one point it started but died within seconds, sputtered as if was out of gas. There is over 1/2 tank in the car.

Pulled out plug wires #1 & 2 Had spark coming from them. Also, after having #2 plug wire out testing with a screw driver it seemed to want to crank over much stronger. New plugs have been replaced. No check engine light is on.

Only thing that has been done to the car this week was raising the driver side harness to keep from rubbing. Nothing else has been done other than normal driving. Will list anything else I can think of or have/will do.

Ok, just checked fp fuse and it was good. checked hose after fuel filter/ disconnected it and turned key on. It shot gas quickly and with enough pressure I would say. Still turning over the same as it did before.

let it sit with the plugs out of the car

you may have cranked it too much and mildly flooded the cylinders

heavy gas smell?
take a look in the cylinders as well. wet is normal. a small pool is one particular cylinder is no good.

It sounds like I have the same problem that you do. I'll make sure to keep an eye on this thread. G/L!

Could it be possible for the timing chain to have gone? I mean there were no signs of anything going bad. I just went over in the morning and it was just turning over. I was surprised for the fact usually I would expect some sort of symptom before hand.

What could really just go out over night while parked. Well I will check the cylinders and clean out the cables thoroughly.

Could it also be the starter or even alternator? Was checking in because I am thinking of taking out the starter to have it tested.

give the starter a couple "love taps" with a hammer. its possible the starter has a flat spot.

will do. thanks, also Could the timing chain have busted. I am gonna check the distributor for moisture and cylinders for wetness, and check for bad starter ground connection. Will post back with results.

I pulled out the plugs from 1&2 and they both looked dry even while cranking it. The plugs themselves smelled like gas, but the cylinders looked to be dry, and with debris. Lifted valve cover a bit and the timing chain was intact. Pulled off distributor cap and wipe off excess moisture.

I will have to wait till tomorrow to lift the car to get to the starter ground. I have a lower jack at my parents house.

Does it sound like the fuel pump is not strong enough or maybe injectors? Could these have really gone out over night?

Will be checking back for more advice and will post after I check for better ground tomorrow.
