I just got my car (95 240) out of the shop and was driving it home. About 20 minutes into the drive this loud whining noise arises from under the car it sounds like it's coming from the rear, but it also sounds like it's coming from where the shifter is. Also when I'm driving and the whining starts the transmission where the shifter is sounds like something is loose and it sounds like something isn't catching. I have driven it for about 60 miles because I had no other choice. The car feels like it has the same amount of power and drives fine, but that noise is deafening almost like I have a whistle tip on my car. Has anyone had this happen to them?

also, I can only hear the noise while accelerating.

if the car is a five speed it would probably be your throw out bearing, if your lsd is new it could have been put in wrong but the noise would not be that loud, when a throw out bearing wears out it can get pretty darn loud, makes a high squeeling noise, just ask any local shop and they could tell you what the noise is

would the tob make noise while it's accelerating? because once I let off the gas and push the clutch it the noise goes away.

also it never whines in first and in the first part of second, but once it gets to third it whines all the way to 5th and keeps whining anytime I accelerate. Once I let off the accelerator it stops.

Whining sound almost always is the tranny bearings.....
can you hear it when in 4th or 5th gear?
mine whines when in 1st-3rd, then in 4th i dont hear it anymore, i know its my bearing ,
also you said when you step on the clutch it goes away= even more sure it is the bearing.
what kind of work did they do at the shop?
make sure your tranny fluid is full.
the loose sound could be a broken piece of the tranny, when i first picked up my 240 the clutch was basically in pieces, it grinded, whined , when we took it apart , there were pieces of metal allover the inside of the tranny, it was grinding itself to pieces.

3-5 gear I hear it when accelerating. They do all kinds of work on the shop, but I don't know what kind of work/inspection they did on the car. Especially since he sold it to me as is. I'm probably going to a different shop tomorrow because I'm not close to the other shop and I'll tell you what they tell me.

Whining sound like theirs no tranny fluid in it? Although i don't think that would be deafening... Noticeable, but not deafening.

It's really hard to tell.. What was your car in the shop for first of all?? I would recommend checking the fluid level, but I do not believe it has anything to do with the real problem at hand. Put the car up on a lift, or if you are crazy enough..jack up the rear end, and put the car on stands.. Lay down next to the car, and see where the noise is coming from. Noises thankfully do not usually transfer down.. Vibrations do, so you lucked out :)

well I bought the car with the sr20 swap that was done by the shop. They did all the work and I was told that this car would be in running condition, but I haven't even really gotten on it and it start making this loud ass noise and sometimes it takes about 1-2 minutes to start.

two things to check. this is easiest and the cheapest put the rear of your car in the air use stands to jeep the car in the air also make sure you have plenty of room do you can get to the diff. now hold the drive shaft and giggle it up and down and look and the half shaft on the diff if your see it giggle its loose and i just needs to be re-thightend and thats the end of that problem number two its your bearing know for this you need to remove your tranny and change it and that we fix your problem. hope this helps.
