S13 redtop with 62,500 miles on it.

Pretty good quality recording...

The noise in question is not the ticking from the injectors but the other one. It would be the actual lifters you think? I think the noise occured when I made the switch to synthetic for (2,500mi) and then I went back to the mineral.

It's not timing chain rattle as I have solved that one by upgrading the tensioner and removing the top chain guide.

This is running Castrol GTX 10W40... maybe go to a lighter/thicker weight (10W50)?

I have a related sound to your motor, but i have a rb25det. yea if some one knows what that sound is that would be great.

sounds close to an exhaust leak but the only thing that would be affected by oil would be your HLA's Hydraulic Lash Adjusters, so either they have Air in them (unlikely unless removed and improperly cared for) or your Oil pump is dieing, So check your oil pressure.

But it doesn't sound too bad does it get louder at higher RPM's?

There is no exhaust leak at all. The sound only occurs at idle. At any other RPM it sounds fine.

How bad does a dent in an oil pan have to be for the oil pickup to have a problem?

ohhh.. Your main spot for concern is that retangular flat peice in the middle of the oil pan there is a few MM of clearance between the pic up and pan so make sure its not dented or you'll cavitate your pump

as far as your hydraulic lifters go, they DO produce a ticking sound and it is associated with oil. Lemme ask you something... after the motor warms up does it get better? If it does then your lifters are simply bleeding out and you need to change to a thicker weight oil to solve that problem. If it does not get better, you might have air pockets in the lifters that are preventing them from priming.

Actually I think the noise is more prominent when the motor is warm. When starting cold the motor sounds fine. Do you think the 10W40 is a little too thick for the HLAs? That's what I read.

my s13 blacktop with 45K and mobile1 synthetic 15W50 sounds the same
therefore, i don't think switching to a thicker oil would quiet it down

I had a similar ticking noise from my redtop but I think mine ticked slower than urs.... and it went away at higher revs (or just couldn't hear it cause of the engine noise).... I seafoamed my engine and swapped to Amsoil 20w50 and it seems to have gone away, though every now and then i think i can still hear it faintly....

HLA's DO NOT like thick oil. Stick to 5w30 or 10w30. That sound is normal.
