My friend has a blacktop SR going into a '91 240sx chassis, and it's having some problems.
Anyone know what the problem might be? Here are the details:
Starts up fine, idles high at about 1,200 RPM
When revved-up to 5,500 RPM, starts to spit, pop, sputter
When let off throttle - it dies.
s13 Blacktop SR20DET
FMIC
3" cat-back exhaust
z32 MAFS (but tried 2 other 240sx sensors)
Alluminum radiator

cant use a z32 mafs without some sort of tuning device (safc, romtune, etc)
you need the s13 maf for your ecu to read it correctly

I was having the same exact problem when I put my engine in. Don't give up on it, it's not a big thing. Make sure all your vacuum hoses are ok and not leaking, ensure all the sensors are in good working condition, test each and everyone of your spark plugs, MAF should be connected and working, and make sure your timing is really good. Timing was my problem along with some hoses being disconnected. Good Luck.

Yup, that's right too, might be able to use the one from the KA too, not sure.

No Ka mafs. Just the sohc.

So, you can only use the SOHC maf on the sr?

you can use different mafs but you need an safc, etc. to tell the ecu to compensate if its not the mafs that the ecu is told it is

well...you can use the sohc maf without any type of tuning. just make sure you do the maf wiring correctly and the signal doesnt have any interferrance (the wiring wrapped around wires on the stock harness is the isulation for the maf wires.)

Ok, I got you. So, Cut about 2-3feet maybe, of the shielded wire from the KA wiring hardness or get some shielded wire, at a shop and let the magic work, since this cable needs to be extended anyways.

bad coil packs
It could be too, So what he wants to do is switch that suspect coil pack to a different cylinder and do the same test and see if it follows the coil pack or not. If problem not the coil pack then it could be the igniter.

the world would be so much easier if you were issued a power probe at birth. lol

you need to tune the car. you cant just slap on the z32 maf and expect it to magically work. lolz -=)
and yes you can use the single over head maf. just re wire accordingly. im running the same set up on my redtop.

Thanks guys, I told my friend, and he is frantically trying to find a sohc mafs. Is it definitive that DOHC KA24DE Mass Air Flow will not work?
There is no tuning for now. He needs to get the car running first.

Fuck it, see if you can get ahold of a SR maf from who ever you guys got the engine from. It wont kill you to ask. Sohc maf should be your 2nd option and a SAFC is your third.
I have both an SR maf and a SOHC maf and I can't tell the difference between them they are so similar.

you gotta repin the maf plug if you use the sohc maf...:squint:

so yea just to clarify, you can use the sohc ka maf, not dohc ka maf. sr maf (obviously). could be the coilpacks, as well as the coilpack harness. good luck!

or splice the SOHC plug into your wiring. :D

The SOHC and SR20DET MAFS are the Exact same Part. Compare the S/N and they are exactly the same!
You dont need to repin anything to use KA24E MAF.
No KA24DE MAF will NOT work
