View Full Version : building dual-headlight popups

i saw a pic of this kit on.. hell, i don't remember. point is, it was a kit to convert your sealed-beam headlights so that instead of having one big rectangle light, you have two little projectors on each side, and the headlights only pop up half as far, and don't look big and dorky. the kit was like 650 dollars, though, so i think i'm gonna get me some sheet metal and build my own using my highschools workshop. as far as i can tell, all i'd have to do is fabricate some sort of metal replacement for the black shroud that surrounds the headlight, mount a pair of projectors in it, and then wire it up proper and get a Pivot headlight thingie. has anyone attempted this? i was thinking using the original socket, converted to H4, and having one pair of H4's and then a set of foglights.
here's what i'm thinking on pricing...
sheet metal, hardware - <$30
headlights - <$100
pivot dealie - $100
paint & primer to match my car - <$10
does this sound about right? if so it comes out to a little under 240 for the project.
also, i think i could mount the new shroud to the stock one's mounting points.... making it reverseable and simple. oooh!

i believe ur referring to the conversion that clearcorners.com (http://www.clearcorners.com) is offering. they're selling that conversion for about $1000. it uses H9's, not H4's, tho. they have a list of all the needed hardware and whatnot, so u can just copy they're list and add it onto ur list, if u don't already have what's listed.
i'd go with the clearcorners conversion, mainly cuz i'm a lazy slob. but also, their other version of the kit gives it those BMW "Angel Eye's" look. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

yes, the second one is exactly what i mean, but the first makes me want to take a different angle. maybe i should go visit the BMW dealer 2morrow, see how much replacement headlights are.

so your car has the suspenion completely done, your making about 400hp...thats a lot of money to drop into a 92 nissan... and you still have enough for headlights.. i envy you

i'm going to assume you're taking the sneaky approach at calling me an all-show no-go riceboy. well, i don't NEED or WANT 400 horse. nor do i have the money to pull that off for my current s13. my hope is that it lives long enough for me to resell it and buy another one after i'm done with college. right now i don't want massive horses. i wouldn't mind a built suspension, so maybe a few paychecks down the line... but until then, i just want some good looking headlights.
also, it's not like i'm bolting an aluminum wing to my deck and welding a 6" fartcan to my pipes....
these headlights are gonna be cool, bite me <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

HAHAHAH Loren thats the funniest post I've ever read of yours. No offense Nerfdude, but it was golden. I think you should just save up and buy the east bear set from clearcorners.com It will be worth it instead of going through all that fabricating trouble.

Mike doesn't sell Eastbear... Its his own design, done in house.

[email protected] headlights are quality. Excellent lighting characteristics. I used to design lighting for M-B and VW and we got to bounce a few ideas off of each other. The guy definitely knows what he's doing, hence why he can charge a premium for a premium design.

I would go with clearcorners.com rather then making them yourself. But then again nothing is better then doing a custom job on your car by yourself.

Except having a professional do a custom job on your car. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
Clearcorners is basically going to be custom work. Mike is a perfectionist and he does all of the cars in house. He WILL NOT ship you parts/conversion for self install. Don't even ask.

This topic's been done before. Just before clearcorners threw out their design.
The bulbs themselves are gonna cost you A LOT more then just $100 each. BMW replacement headlights are about $250^ for most models. You should visit a local junkyard and look at what they might have in stock, you never know what you'll find.

i honestly would try to build y own kit as well before sending a car to get new headlights installed for 1000+ dollers.

I agree. And screw pop ups put them in flush like 300Z lights, but just the same size and space as the flip-ups. Just use some DOT-legal projectors like the Domestic Iron custom street rod guys do.

There is some guy on FreshAlloy who retro-fitted the new BMW projectors into his S14B (97-98) headlights.....and it looks sweet. The only thing is, he paid $500 for a used pair. If you're looking to build some homemade light fixtures, HID will be an expensive route...so you'd better have a design that works to make it worth peicing it together....especially with a S13. If I were you, get ahold of a broken BMW HID projector bulb (but still in one peice) and use it to test fit into what you are building. If it fits nicely...save up for the BMW projectors and install them.
Have you ever seen the Ab-Flug Grim headlights?
http://www.ab-flug.co.jp/abflug_....&max=15 (http://www.ab-flug.co.jp/abflug_shop/item_list.php?id=__33%&page=1&max=15)
You could probably order them from Taka Kaira

..but they sell for $1166.00 on there.

angel eyes come off the 5 series. you cant just buy the the "angel eye" its self. you need to buy the whole lamp assymbly and take it apart. the assymbly is about $500 each. and plus the rings (angel eye/demon eye) are about 3 inches. i was too lazy to read so i just posted <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hehe:'>
