View Full Version : ticking noise underneath intake manifold

ok i just got done with my sr swap yesterday...it fired up perfectly on the first try but if i go real close to the intake manifold i hear a ticking/spark sound...it sounds like its coming from underneath the intake manifold....could it be the starter?
also just today when i went to start the car again it wouldn't start right away and when it did after cranking it several times i went to pressed on the throttle body and it puttered and then rev up...any suggestions?...vacuum leak maybe? i know i didnt have enough gas and my meter isnt working for some reason...could it be that?
Stock SR Swap:
greddy Fmic
hks bov
megan turbo outlet pipe with 3in downpipe
stock fuel pump
no boost controller or gauge
this is what i have so far just to start the car up
heres a video of the puttering...dont mind the whoo!!!

spray some carb clean around the intake manifold, where the upper meets the lower and where it meets with the head, as well as vacuum hoses.
yea that will find a vacuum leak if you have one, you forgot to tell him that. and that itll idle higher slightly when it does find a leak.
the ticking sound is probably your injectors firing.

Yup I always thought the ticking sounds were from the injectors? You should probably upgrade your fuel pump too.

will aftermarket injectors stop that ticking?

so carb cleaner in the intake manifold for the puttering, gotcha....and injectors for the ticking noise...would they make that noise?

I don't think you want your injectors to stop ticking.
I can't tell how severe your ticking is but your engine sounds good from the initial start.
Good luck and enjoy!

so injectors do make a ticking noise...sorry for noobness..this is my first sr swap ive done...actually first swap ever lol...but engine does sound good from what i can here...just need to find the vacuum leak

I'm almost sure of it but if someone else can confirm this please. Oh and make sure you upgrade your fuel pump.

yes injectors make a ticking noise, it happens when they "fire" fuel. It's normal, but you WILL NOT be able to hear it over the motor itself while running. So if you can hear a loud clicking noise coming from the intake side without your ear physically on the injector or intake, it's something else.

little off subject but while you're at it, change your fuel filter to 300zx TT for superior fuel filtration/flow.
When these motors are shipped from Japan, they can be exposed to elements that may deteriorate gaskets, hoses, and sensors. The way they SHOULD be shipped is in a watertight bag with silica gel packets. That's in a perfect world, not to mention not very cost effective for the money they make. Bottom line, there's a reason they pull these motors out at 50K because the efficiency is not up to JSPEC. So we get the leftovers, and have to expect a little money sunk into them bringing things back to spec.

i do have a z32 fuel filter installed and when i got the motor i replaced all gaskets and hoses

are you 100% sure about that? My injectors tick so loud I can hear it when I'm inside the car. Been doing that for 50k miles now...lol

wow really?...so the ticking i have is normal? i mean i dont have to put my ear physically on the injector to hear it....cause i can hear it when im like 8in away from the injector...plus the car is real loud so its hard to tell cause its open downpipe

yeah I'm a %100 sure you shouldn't be able to it hear it. Considering everything is completely right, hence SHOULDN'T. But things do happen, I myself have never ran into a SR or CA or RB, or in general, any motor that I'm able to hear the injectors firing even over a stock exhaust

All of the other S13's that I've owned I've heard the injectors, It's even louder on Honda engines. I've never heard them while sitting inside my car though but maybe try using injector cleaner or something.

That doesnt sound like an injector problem. That sounds like a valvetrain problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong but:
In Japan, the smog regulations are different than here and extremely anal. Being the 2nd greatest fossil fuel consumer, Japan felt they had to step up to the plate some years back and put the smack down on gross polluters. When a motor is beyond 50,000 miles or about 5-8 years, it is no longer "clean." It is past it's smog limit (regardless of condition, even though it may still pollute very little.) The result of this is a stockpile of Nissan, Suzuki, Honda, Toyota motors laying around that cannot be used in Japan, and though illegal in the States, SR's like many other engines are brought in crates. Sold on Ebay or through shops, etc. The most overlooked (and important) components are seals, sensors, and hoses. During shipping, salt which happens to be a great destroyer of all things works it's magic on these parts.
In an ideal world, everything would be covered but it's not and parts are exposed to these elements while taking the trip here in a crate or sitting in a yard/garage near the ocean. My intent is not to bash anyone, but I appreciate the opportunity to share with others, the importance of changing gaskets, seals, hoses, wiring the right way even if you're on a budget.:duh:
ecuastyle, 370's and up are loud like everyone confirmed. when you cranked it several times, do you think you may have flooded her? She sounded tits when you fired her up the first time!

hmm i didnt know that 370s and up are loud....and i dont know if i flooded her but your right it did fire up perfect the first time....i just hope the ticking aint nothing serious...imma post a video of the ticking today so that you can hear what im hearing, might help alittle more

I'll take a vid of the 370's firing away, find a host online and post it. I gotta drop off a trans first but should be later today.
remember the injectors are just a solenoid, if you take a hose and put one end to your ear and the other to block it can help find problems. Or take a screwdriver and do the same thing with injectors, you'll hear them oscillating. Dependant on the duty cycle the computer tells it, the solenoid in the injector will actuate up to several times a second.
what you need to confirm is if the sound is indeed coming from further down on the block.

Injectors always make a slight ticking noise. Some people can hear it, on some vehicles, and some can't. I can BARELY hear it on my SR, but most of my friends can't hear it at all, and think I'm imagining it. When I try the screwdriver trick, I can hear it way louder.
ecuastyle84

i can hear it without doing the screwdriver trick but its not loud and i know def its not coming from the block but ill try that screwdriver trick to make sure

Your timing chain will slap around if oil pressurized adjusters were not there to keep things tight. Think of all the KA's that have the broken chain guide, there's also other guides on the sides to keep it quiet in there. If it is your Lash Adjusters, I would suspect oil pressure do you have an oil pressure gauge?
I must have a trained ear because I know the sound of my 370's and the sound they make. That motor sounds fresh!

I'm pretty sure it's not my valvetrain that's ticking. I've had that problem on other vehicles and it doesn't sound like this. I will add that I sent my injectors to Deustchwerks (sp?) a while ago.
This is what my ticking sounds like:

When I run the KA kinda hard, I can deff hear some slapping as the cams advance or retard. the chain is controlled by the dizzy which says "faster or slower".
the slapping I mentioned is due to the timing going from -8 deg to -20deg for example and the chain has lash. this lash is basically forward momentum and slop from wear and tear over 145K miles. On an already turbocharged engine, this can occur sooner.
Deutchwerks to my knowledge hacks existing injectors, which could possibly affect the noise level. performance/ecnomy balance may be affected.
It seems hard for me to believe that anything is wrong with either engine but check oil level, and put a tee into the oil pressure sender to run an oil pressure gauge. When you start the car the oil pressure has not built up, especially if you're running a light viscosity oil. Once warmed up, the pressure should build a little.

My E36 made the same noise but I didn't think anything of it. I don't think it's the injectors though I think BMW motors just sound like that cause it made that sound when I first bought it and it still made that sound after a full rebuild.
