View Full Version : Cylinder compression test
Just did a cylinder compression test on my redtop, came back at exactly 130 in all four cylinders. All my research on the net has told me that 150 or so is optimal, do I have any reason for concern with the numbers I got? The engine was completely cold when I did the test, is that not a good idea, should I have warmed it up first?
Thanks so much guys in advance. Im just planning on putting an s15 turbo on and want to make sure that the engine will handle it okay :bigok:

Yeah you should have warmed it up. When your engine is warm, the metal pistons and rings expand slightly, and that would give you better compression. So odds are your probably right around your 150 mark. Good find with that engine!
Im doing a comp test on my KA tomorrow with 180,000 miles, and if i get ANYWHERE near 130 on all 4, then I'll be a happy camper... wishful thinking.
Thats what my roomate just told me, sweet!!
Can't believe I got this car for five grand, greddy front mount intercooler, hks exhaust, perfect running sr20det, sick wheels. Im a happy guy right now.

Also if it is a metal head gasket slightly taller than stalk, it will keep the comp test down. At 1.2mm, compression is close to 95psi

as long as they are consistent, your good to go.

I just did a compression test on my ka-e. 150 across the table. My question to anyone that knows: should I Re-ring or rebuild my engine? 180,000 miles. I'm Going to replace all the rings, water pump, oil pump, and gaskets anyhow, and odds are im not going turbo, just a few bolt ons (pullies, cam, header, and what I already have) Money is the motivating factor, but if someone who knows from experience says rebuild, I can work a few more hours a week.
any info is appreciated.
oh yeah, the bolt ons are going to come one piece at a time, and probably very slowly.

Not to that extent! I have a greddy 1.2mm headgasket and I measured 150psi across all my cylinders.
