found a rocker arm guide in oil pan but pervious owner said head was serviced and most likely dorpped a guide in engine while doing work on the head. inspected the head and for every cylinder seems to have a shim a guide on either the intake or exhaust valve. dont know much about head mechanical so maybe you guys can confirm my luck. out of the 16 valves there seems to me as 8 shims and 8 guides for the rocker arms in the head. am i right? if not im going to return this motor.

That's correct. The shim/guides will find their way to the oil pan if happen to throw a rocker.

if he dropped a valve guide into the head, and it made its way to the oil pan, you better believe something is fucked up.

I would have returned it when I saw metal engine parts in the oil pan

Is the engine in your car running? Anything weird going on? Something ticking badly? Smoke? If theres nothing seems wrong and shiets already in the car, you can assume that you got lucky. If the shim was dropped while he was working on it and was replaced but he couldnt find it, you could have lucked out and it just fell down the front cover into the pan. What does the shim look like? Did it look like it got fucked up? If it didnt have any chips or anything like that, I prolly wouldnt worry about it too much...like I said, he could have dropped it straight down the front cover.

the guide looks perfect. but camn someone answer the question about how many shims and rocker arm guides are there in a sr motor?

Hey,
Yes, there should be 1 shim and 1 guide for each rocker arm. So since there aer 8 rocker arms, there should be 8 shims and 8 guides.

While you have the oil pan off, check the oil pick up tube. I actually got a blacktop SR that had 2 shims in the oil pan, the pick up tube screen had a hole in it from the shims being sucked up the tube... then it busted a crack through the front cover. I didn't see it until i took off the crank pully , the reason i did not have any oil pressure.. Like you, I was not missing any shims up at the head. Luckily heavythrottle warrantied the parts I needed to replace and the motor is okay and running now.

But like everyone else is saying, if you have the opportunity to return the engine, I would go that route. Otherwise you might be trouble shooting for a LONG time..

Take that crap back. Those guides could have really messed stuff up.
