hey guys

well, heres my problem.in my 1995 s14 se,my fuel gauge is "inconsistent"..like the fuel level will go up and down all the time,so i dont know if i have to fuel up or not.like it will be at mid point one minute, then be at the stick below it in about 2-3 minutes, but go back up .anyone have any idea whats causing this?also,is therea warning like when the fuel tank is empty?thanks!

well, from my experience in most cars they judge your gas tank capacity by how fast you're going/how high you're reving. i.e. if you're getting on the freeway and you're accelerating fast then it will drop down a bit and them go back up once you're at a steady pace. There is also a warning light that pops up once you get too low. (For some reason my current 98 S14 doesn't seem to light it up :( any reasons?) But if your needle is moving a lot then i'm not sure what it is.

Most likely the float in the gas tank is loose or broken(If the movement is relatively slow and steady on the gauge). Check the electrical connections on the top of the gas tank too for poor or dirty connections(If the movement is eratic up and down quickly on the gauge). GL

The float may have came off the piece it connects to inside the gas tank. Its a relatively straight forward fix but just make sure you have 1/4 tank left before proceeding. If you have a S14 make sure you get a gas tank gasket as well from the dealer ship. I have found out that the S14 gas gauge is very inaccurate.

From the sound of it you aren't very experienced at cars....?

My first tip would be to have an experienced auto mech or tech present if you're going to be pulling the fuel pump. You can hurt yourself if your not careful.

Yes before you do anyhting, go to the dealer and order a new "fuel pump cover gasket" You will need to replace it if you break the seal on the fuel pump cover.

And yes 240sx fuel gauges are very fickle. If your going into the tank, take out the fuel sending unit and clean the contact points on the fuel sender unit. This is the part that is basically two metal contacts that determine resistance which gives you your fuel gauge reading on the dash. If they're dirty or corroded they will give you jumpy and incorrect readings. Clean them off with some brake clean and a q-tip.

And if your gas gauge is dropping when you hit the gas, check your ground points. Bad ground somewhere.

Oh, and buy a new gas cap...they're 10 bucks.

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I was driving to day and had a little over half a tank.I drive around for awhile and my gas hand reads full. I never got gas or anything. It will move when its on a sloop or i go around a sharp corner. Anyone ever had this happen to them and if so how did you fix it.
