View Full Version : Wiring Ignitor to correct Coilpacks - Need clarifying

I started my car a couple weeks ago to see if I wired everything up right, but now I am having doubts if I wired my Q45 ingitor chip properly to my coil packs.
My car starts, but its a little rough. I am thinking its because the engine has been sitting for months (s14 SR20DET).
I followed the directions from here:
http://srownersclub.com/faq/faq_ignitor.asp
In the directions it says the following:
Pin 1 --> Coilpack 1 (Red)
Pin 2 --> Coilpack 2 (Red/Green)
Pin 3 --> Coilpack 3 (Red/Blue)
Pin 4 --> Coilpack 4 (Red/White)
Now my questions are:
How do I know if I wired this correct?
Am I misfiring? If so, how can I tell?
From the pictures below, you can see that I marked my coilpacks with numbers to indicated which coilpack is what. I just noticed that the coilpacks and the plugs have already been marked with dots to indicated which is which from the previous owner.
Are coilpacks 1 through 4 layed out in sequence 1, 2, 3, 4 or are they layed out 3, 4, 1, 2 like I thought they were. I am thinking 1, 2, 3, 4 because thats what the FSM says - Pages EL-264 and EC-121. Does this mean that Heavythrottle's wiring is wrong or maybe its for the s13 SR20DET?
I am really confused. Not sure If I explained myself clear enough. If I didn't, please let me know. Thanks

bump. Anyone? I can try and explain a little better if needed

the fsm is correct in regards to the coil pack positions. If you wired them up the way you have it numbered you will have coil pack timing incorrect.
I cant speak to much being that its an s14 as far as the pinout goes, but the HT pinouts work. I had a buddy follow their write up and it worked out fine. (S13 SR though.. )
good luck.

OK makes sense. next best thing to do would be to wire it up the other way and see what happens I guess? and see which one is better.
Anyone with a s14 SR20DET out there that could give some feedback?
Thanks

bump. Anyone know how to wire Q45 ignitor to the coilpacks correctly on a s14 SR20DET? Theres gotta be somebody out there

I did some more research. This is confusing me as hell. The information on heavythrottle.com about wiring up the Q45 Ignitor just doesn't make sense to me.
The following picture is from heavythrottle's document and the others are traight out of the FSM for the s13 SR and the s14 SR. I looked up both engines. Why? because heavythrottle didn't specify which engine they were talking about or if it even mattered. I am assuming they were talking about the s13 SR since they mentioned the Red/Blue wire.

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k10/dylanw83/coils_s14sr.jpg
Now stay with me for a min..
Heavythrottle's document says to wire the following pins (from the Q45 Ignitor) to.. :
Top Left pin --> Coil pack 3 which is supposedly Red/Blue
Bottom Left Pin -- > Coil pack 4 which is supposedly Red/White
Top Right Pin --> Coil pack 1 which is supposedly Red
Bottom Right Pin --> Coil pack 2 which is supposedly Red/Green
From the FSM:
Coilpack 1 --> Black or Red/Blue
Coilpack 2 --> Red/White
Coilpack 3 --> Red
Coilpack 4 --> Red/Green
As far as I can see, it doesn't add up correctly. If I overlooked something, then please feel free to point it out. As a last resort, I could just wire things up and see if thats the way it should be, but we all know thats a long and painful process of about 16 possible combinations.There must be someone out there who can shed some light on this for me and others. Thanks

OK well no one is responding. I feel like Im talking to myself. Maybe someone can get some use out of the research I've done. I believe heavythrottle just made a typo on their document for the pins-to-coilpacks. Simple mistake, yet I can see how it can mess a lot of people up considering everyone refers to their website for information.
This is how I am going to wire up my Q45 Ignitor:
On 1 side of the ignitor, the 5 wires match up with the corresponding colored wires on the ignitor plug coming off the the SR Harness (which you will modify of course).
On the other side with the 4 wires, I will do the following:
Coilpack 1 - Pink --> Pink (Black or Red/Blue)
Coilpack 2 - Pink/Green --> White (Red/White)
Coilpack 3 - Black --> Brown (Red)
Coilpack 4 - Pink/White --> Green (Red/Green)

To be honest my car is still not running due to certain reasons at the moment, so I cannot say that this is the correct way of wiring it up, but I know that when I wired it like I said above, my engine started up and ran on its own.

i just wired mine( using a Z32) ignitor and its not working. I pretty much did it the same way you did and its still not working. My first coilpack is black instead of red/blue. I might have s13 coilpacks on my car instead of s14. Whatever ill figure it out. Thanks.

could be your z32 ignitor wiring because I think its a little different, but I can't remember

THanks man. I did it and traced my wiring all the way back and got my car running. Thanks man.

i know i'm tardy to the party, but it seems both of you did it correctly. did you do it the ht way or the op's way? i just want to confirm an get a definite answer on what works since i wired mine up like this
wiring a q45 ignitor chip for an sr20: SR20DET Forum (rear-drive): Nissan Forums / Infiniti Forums - NICOclub (http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=451881)
and its not working. this might not necessarily be my problem though so i can't say for sure if mine is wrong. i just want to confirm whats right

just to add 1 more thing, i used ms paint to adjust the q45 diagram. i believe this is correct from the information in this thread, is that correct?

uhh yes i think, but u should say pin 1 to red/blue or black depending on what sr20det u have

ahhh sorry i just did the s13 sr colors since thats what i have. i should change it so that it is universal and other can use it

Slightly old thread, but confirming the information. This diagram works for S14 SR.

That's weird, i used the original heavythrottle wiring diagram on my s13sr blacktop, and it works just fine (been running for 5 years already), and my wiring harness has the same colors as their diagram.

I believe my harness colours were different. It depends on if you are connecting a z32 ignitor or q45 ignitor and if its for a s13 or s14. If you read the above post, Enna confirmed all of my crazy talk was correct
Seeing how I hate idiots, and that guy just made himself out to be one, I'll elaborate once. This is all for S14 SR. If you bothered to read you would've noticed that.
Otherwise this works perfectly fine for Q45 ignitor on S14 SR.
