You read wrong. The diff has nothing to do with the driveshaft fitment.

the s13 drive shaft should fit perfectly, it dosent matter if it came out of an auto or 5spd, the diffs are the same in both

Actually there are small differences - like using S13 rear cover (4bolt vs 2bolt) and front mounting points require longer bolts as S14 uses bushings vs solid S13
But they are both 6bolt axles and 4.08 gear. so they are same there

a lot of people simply swap the rear cover and bolt it up but there is another difference. The S13 is solidly mounted to the rear subframe with 2 bolts on the cover and 2 bolts on the housing while the s14 uses bushings on the housing, thats why the s14 cover has 4 mounting studs. Youll probably be fine just bolting it up but you may find it more appropriate to take my approach. I had 2 solid steel bushings made that fit snugly in the housing. for the fabrication of both i spent 45 dollars.
since so many people have bolted it up with apparently no issues, do whatever your comfortable with.
45BUX?????
Holly hell you got ripped off.
I made them myself - sort of to resemble the solid subframe ones - 1.1in or 28mm dia hole. Throw a steel on lathe and made the bushings. Only cost was time. I guess I could start making those and sell them for $50 to you guys

your very fortunate to have a lathe. I was happy to spend so little in order to be worry free. Im sure you could sell these as a swap kit.

Make sure you swap covers on the diffs.. they are different, and bieng the s14 diff has bushings in the front, I've read in other places that you are gonna need bigger washers on the front two bolts to hold the diff in place. Otherwise the bolts will be just holding the bushings. The bolts need to be longer too.. look at this url towards the bottom http://www.ka24development.com/vlsd.html

ABS diffs are longer if they come from a J30 and sometimes the non ABS driveshaft won't fit.
