Starter is the same for all 89-98 models, auto or manual. Top bolt is best accessed from above. Dropping the transmission is impossible until you remove that bolt anyway, so you're assumptions are incorrect.

Tranny doesn't need to come out. Split your driveshaft at the hanger bearing and remove the 4 bolts that hold the tranny mount to the frame (make sure to tie the front of the shaft to the mount as it will slip out & you'll lose all your fluid). It'll sag enough to be able to get at the top bolt from the rear with a hella-long extension, maybe even a ratchet. PITA but not ridiculously difficult. Worse case, you can use a block of wood and tranny jack under your oil pan for a small bit of extra sag, but I don't think you'll need it if yoyur motor mounts are stock.

I didnt have to go through and of ^^^ shit. Just get some extensions, I've changed my starter 3 times and never had a problem(besides the unit itself)

not that hard, kind of a bitch to do. but meh. do what you gotta do. just lay under there until you can find a way to fit a rachet up there.
