I have a stock Garrett t28 that came with my s14 S220DET.

I searched online for some rebuild kits and I came across this website which gave me a little bit of useful information:

http://www.gpopshop.com/garrettt2kits.html

My turbo is currently spitting oil out like a mofo. I want you guys to know I am on a strict budget as well. My goal for my car is to spool up quick and have a HP goal of around 300-350 rwhp.

I am not sure if I should dish out the cash for a new turbo or to rebuild the T28 that I have. If I get a new turbo, I was considering the Garrett GT28RS Disco Potato. I know a lot of you guys will say to get the next step up which is the GT2871R. Like I said before, I want it to spool as fast as I can and have a max hp of about 350ish and thats why I am thinking of the Disco Potato.

That website I listed above says that there 2 different kinds of seals. Because my turbo was on a s14 engine, I am assuming that I am to go with the dynamic seal. Correct me if I am wrong at anytime.

For those of you who have rebuilt your turbos if you could answer some questions of mine:

1. If I was to rebuild my T28, would it be like new again? EDIT: The kit I am looking at is a genuine Garrett rebuild kit.

2. Would I be a fool to think I could rebuild it myself?

3. After all is said and done, how much did it cost you to rebuild the turbo even if you had to send it to a shop to get it done + the price of the rebuild kit + taxes.

Thanks

around where i live it costs and arm and a leg to get someone to rebuild a ball bearing turbo. for the price i would suggest just upgrading to even a gt28rs but the 71r is freaking sick on a sr with the proper supporting mods

1. if it's a genuine rebuild kit, your turbo will basically perform like new unless your turbine wheel and housing, or compressor wheel and housing have damage to them. Get it rebuilt by a shop since they'll have the right tools. If not, you risk damaging the shaft or turbine blades.

2. You can rebuild it yourself if you had the right tools, which you probably don't. This applies to both ball bearing and journal bearing turbos.

3. I've never had a turbo of my own to rebuild, so I wouldn't know.

good luck man.

depends on the model of t28 you have from the s14 there is one that is journal and one that is ballbearing. if its ball bearng then the center section is going to probably cost as much as a new turbo plus the price of the rebuild anyhow its kinda your decision as to whether you are happy with that turbo or whether you want more.

You could probably get away with rebuilding it yourself. The only issue would be properly balancing everything to spec properly. Its always good to just re-balance after any rebuild.

where are you located maybe I can help you.

Buy a new one.

Remember, pick two;

Fast and reliable. Money is important, but It wouldn't cross my mind unless I thought that the new upgraded turbo was not much of an upgrade from my stock turbo

I am in Canada. I think thats far from you, but thanks anyways ;)

I guess I could try and do it myself and then get a shop to rebalance it afterwards? How much could that possibly be?

If I choose to rebuild this turbo, It won't be a temporarily thing. I want it to be like-new-ish. I'll only boost at a max of 16 psi through it.
