SCCA used to chair them right? What suspension do you recommend for a 240sx? 2700 lbls, rwd, 165hp... Something stiffer than stock springs, but softer than 300-400lbs springs commonly found on coilovers? Skid plates necessary? Minimal ground clearance? Tire type?

I really wanted to try this, but Thunderhill is so far :p Maybe once in a while...

OKAY FOLKS... A LITTLE MORE INFO....
The first ThunderCross will be on August 18th. WOO HOO!!!
B) Trucks WILL be allowed, as well as SUV's or whatever else you can think of... the only requirement is that it's 1/2 ton or under... no 3/4 ton duallys or anything. So dex, get out your bronco.

Jy. I believe if you can get a progressive setup you want it softer than stock... as for skidplates etc, they won't be MANDATORY, because the course is fairly smooth. Tire type, depends on what class you want to be in... there'll be a full list of requirements etc. on here very soon. If you want setup tips from people who REALLY know what the hell they're doing (because I am not especially well-versed in rally-setup) go to FormulaRallyX.com That's a sharp crew.

I actually had a bit more success with the soft stock setup on my old superbeater(red car) than when I went last year and tried my S-Tech/AGX combo (black car).

Setup is very site dependent, and I'm used to soft dirt fields here in the midwest. I hear the cali guys run on a looser, rockier surface. I run a skid plate on my car, but I've never really needed it a rallycross, even when lowered. I did put a 3" hole in it while marshaling a stage rally, but that's a different story. The most important thing is tires, second being a good diff. I'm not sure how their legality requirements run vs. SCCA rules, but I run cheap snow tires with alot of PSI in them. The compound is soft on a hot summer day, and they have tons of tread blocks to dig in.

I highly recommend getting out there and trying it. I've done autocross/drifting/karting/etc. and out of all of them, I have the most fun at Rallycross!

Most of our midwest rallyXs are on plowed fields, so they are relatively smooth, since the rallyX rules don't allow for jumps, and there's not much grip, thats about max suspension compression in that 2nd picture.


I run 14x6 +10 wheels off of an old 280Z with 195/70/14 snow tires Front and 14x7 +8 Celica Supra wheels (w/ enlarged centerbores) just because they were less than $30 at the junkyard and the tires were under $40/peice... hell, my old superbeater cost me less than $200 with mods to build :)

About Understeer: It depends greatly on corner entry speeds and wheel placement. That's one of the things I love best about rallycross, is you can use the variable grip of the course to change your slip angle through a corner. If you go in too fast, and hit the loose stuff on the outside of the corner, this happens:

Whereas if you hook the fronts in a rut you can sling around a corner like a slot car with the throttle.

Now that I'm used to it, I can get the car to rotate just as easily on a rallyX course as I can on snow.

Go out and try it, its fun and is likely less stressful on your car than driving through potholes in the city.

looks like thats a left hand turn... and ur countersteering as the car pushes, rite? brakes dont do so much in that terrain huh!? I gotta try for sure... i thot about it a while ago, then i saw this video on the SCCA rally X page where this 510 is drifting through a turn and then pops up on the 2 outer wheels... the driver had balls of steel cuz he didnt lift throttle and pulled out of it! I tihnk if he lifted, he woulda rolled! CRAZZZZZY.

Yup, Ill be there helping the DDNorcal folks at the drift event. Hope for good weather, and good turnout... and hope its not a snausage fest... like most car events... hahah

Attention Rallyrino's!!!!!!!!
Work has begun on the course design for the upcoming ThunderCross event! and what a course it will be!

-We've got more room than the previous rally-x area, so laptimes should be up above 1 minute. I'm hoping for at least 1:30, but we won't know until we test the course.

-We've got great obstacles including but not limited to: Off-Camber turns, Banked turns, a full-360 turn, and an optional jump-line (for those of you who are in need of some air)

For those of you who are coming:
If you haven't been to the track, it's located at 5250 HWY162, Willows CA 95988. You can mapquest directions, or if you're familiar with northern california these should be enough:

Take I-5 north from sacramento for a little over an hour
-Exit on HWY162 in Willows (be careful, there's a town called "Williams" ...thats not it!)
-Make a left over the overpass and continue past the wal-mart west on 162 for 7 miles.
-Turn right into ThunderHill Gates. Rally-X will be in the field directly to your left as you come in.

IMPORTANT! Remember while on public roads that you're representing Thunderhill. The speed limit on 162 is 55, and people have been known to get ticketed for going 60 (the CHP is hiding out there...) so no shennanigans! I like to think that by non-racers seeing obvious race-cars going at sane speeds on the street, it builds the image of racers as respectable members of society.

Be sure to have your tech sheet filled out!

Just a reminder, the first Thunder-Cross event is tomorrow at ThunderHill (about:blank#) Raceway!

General Info:

- Be sure to bring your $40 entry fee, along with your $30 membership (if you choose to participate in the points series)

- Don't forget a helmet! We have rental helmets available at the track for $30

- Be sure that you have teched (about:blank#) your car, and that it is in good working order before you leave for the track. I'll be doing a really basic tech tomorrow, but it's basically just to verify that you teched (about:blank#) yourself.

- Gates open at 7:00AM (about:blank#)

- Drivers meeting at 8:30AM (about:blank#)

- Bring lots of sunscreen and plenty of fluids to drink. I will have cold water/etc. at the track, but it's always best to come prepared.

The Day's Schedule:

I have 6 of you registered in the rally classes (2wd (about:blank#)/4wd (about:blank#)), and I have 6 registered in the stock classes (no street-mod entrants oddly enough...)

I am planning to break you into 2 groups, stock and rally. Here's where your input comes in (we'll make this final at the drivers meeting tomorrow morning): I am planning to give you 4 runs each, so we can do all 4 runs in each group, then call it a day (or do fun runs... because time WILL permit). OR we can do 2 runs for each group, then cycle, so each group will have 2 stints on course, with 2 runs each stint. I imagine it'll be the most fun if we break it up, but if you want all your runs at once, that's fine.

Looking forward to seeing you all, and meeting those who I don't know. Plan for a day of fun in the dirt! I checked the weather, and its only supposed to be 93 deg tomorrow, so it should be very pleasant.
