Your shit is broke :!:
I don't think it's your inability to drive/shift, it's probably worn synchros and trying to shift too fast. I assume you meant "when you take the car up to sixTY" rather than "six" -- our cars only have 5 forward gears. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
When you shift too hard/fast, you don't always give the synchros (which are probably pretty worn, too) enough time to get up to speed, and your gear will grind. This can be helped by letting the rpms drop a little (by ~1000rpm) before gently pressing the shifter into 3rd rather than power shifting through to 3rd.
The only time I grind is going into reverse sometimes, but I'm a pretty laid back/easy driver so that may have something to do with it.
edit: wait, you're going 60 in 2nd gear?! Do our cars get up to 60 in second? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/eh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':eh:'>

I think he meant 6000 rpms

D'oh.... <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> I never cease to make a fool of myself!
In that case my advice/diagnosis changes: don't shift at such a high rpm or let the rpms fall slightly before shifting.

I get this every once in a while, but it still goes in gear for me while it grinds. Is this the same for you? I think I need new syncros too and is probably why I get this. Anybody know how much these cost? I've heard they're pretty pricey.

i think by 6 he meant rpm's
damnit i was too late with one....i didn't read most of the posts
Try changing our your tranny fluid with some high quality (mobil or other) oil...75-w90 or a weight near there.
If it still does it, either shift slower or get your tranny rebuilt with new syncros...this is a common problem with nissan transmissions.

also try double clutching. i honestly hate double clutching, but it gets the job done.

and that's why i hate it. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> turns a slow car into a slower car. i do have a transmission with 'only' 100,000 on it, waiting to go in this spring.

ack, don't mess with that addative shit. Just drain and fill up again with the weight you want.

hmm, my escort used to do that.. a lot.. and then it would pop out of gear on bumps.. and then it got so bad you had to force in into gear and sometimes even hold it there.
turns out i had a blown synchro, and jamming it in gear bent the shift fork...
ended up having to put a new tranny in. sounds like a synchro problem to me.
also, you might wanna try rev matching a bit... less work for the synchro's (because technically you can drive a car with no synchros if you rev match).

I'd have to agree with whateverjames. My 3rd gear is going (it's innevitable, I've got 100,000+ on the tranny). Double clutching does help. Takes practice, but it works. Slows down the 2-3 shif a bit, but better than chipping some teeth.
Also, go buy a few quarts of Redline manual tranny fluid. Great stuff. Helps smooth the shifts. I just got some.
