I have my engine and tranny out of the car at the moment. While they were both out, I am planning on replacing flywheel and clutch.

Currently the engine is mounted via tranny bolts to a engine stand and the tranny is simply on the floor. Intake and exhaust manifold are already mounted on the head so a side mount is not preferred at the moment.

The plan is to replace the flywheel and clutch, bolt back the tranny to the engine and place back into the car as one assembled unit.

The question is... do you guys just work on the engine on the floor to change the flywheel and eventually mount the tranny? (The engine stand blocks the flywheel). Another option would be to hoist the engine on a crane, and let it dangle around. Either way, seems unwieldy. Couldn't seem to find a writeup or mention on this on Zilvia or google. Maybe it's simply too basic to mention. I don't know.

Hoist it to the crane and rest it on a tire.

Have it on a crane with one person humping the motor if not two. The flywheel will hang lower than the oil pan. Then slide the tranny on and lift the unit into the car.

just put the engine hoist on it, then lower your motor and rest it on the ground, the pavement isnt going to mess up your motor or your tranny, when putting the flywheel and clutch and tranny on, just hoist the motor up a little bit off the ground so you have some clearance. not to high, just enough so the back of the motor is tilted upwards.

IF you are using the stock oil pan then i would rest it on a tire, but if using a cast aluminum pan then np.

Yes engine lift is your best friend! I had a motor/auto tranny hanging on my lift for over a month and it didnt fall - so...

the only time you will use a engine stand is when you are rebuilding the motor - and even if you had a side mount motor stand - you would still have to pull the tranny or it would be top heavy.

if you need any FSM's download as many as you need from my site;

The FSM is your new best friend!

I always lay it on a tire as well, keeps the pan from touching anything.

if you don't have an impact gun for the flywheel bolts, rest it on a tire.

letting the motor dangle a few inches to mount the tranny is what i've done in the past
