Im 100% sure my compressor is failing on me and works when it wants to. Whats the best method to fix a bad compressor? But the trick is keeping my rare ass non-existant R12 frion (sp?). Any ideas? Thanks

sry you can't. Its a sealed system so as soon as you yank one of those lines off to unhook the compressor all of the freon will leak out. Technically if you could bleed the system into a sealable container that could be pressurized then you could re-use it into the system as long as it had an r12 fitting on it. But realistically, you can't do all that, so either find a mechanic shop that still has r12 (we do down here) or just switch to r134a

Freeze 12 is the way to go.

You can buy it without the ridiculous license you need for R12 and it performs the same (If not colder).

you can find r12 in a refrigerator repair shop or if worse comes to worse you can buy a couple cans off of ebay.
it's kinda taxed tho

Why not evacuate it with a recovery machine, then charge it right back up when done? That's what they're made for, funny no one seems to know that.

Most home appliances use R22, not R12. R22 will destroy the o-rings in a minute.

beat me to it...go to a shop, have them evac the system, change out compressor, and then have them recharge it with the r12 they pulled out originally.

take it to an AC shop and have them pull the R12 and put a difrent compressor on, then just put your R12 back in and presto you shouldnt lose any. if you give them R12 and need it back they shouldnt charge you.

It is expensive if you really convert it, the seals "should" be replaced, as well as some of the components. As well as a r12 designed system will not work as well with r134.

oh and +1 to not putting R22 in a car, lol, that will fuck some shit up.

Don't convert, R134a sucks balls. Have a shop suck out the R12, throw on a new compressor, and put it back in.

If they won't, there is a shop I go to in Costa Mesa that does R12 still. They'll let you do all your own labor, too. They're way cool. It is worth the hour or so drive to keep your R12.

i actually just switched to R134a when I changed out the compressor and I have no problems. It still blows as cold as the R12. All I needed to do was buy an adapter for the high and low side.

I have all the equipment required to evacuate and recharge an R12 system. If anyone is in need let me know (It's too hot this summer).
