transmission problems

ok so it acts on and off,it will get stuck in gear or wont go in if i hold my foot down for a few seconds (on the clutch pedal) then when im depressing the clutch pedal it sounds like theres rocks or somthing like inking noise from the tranny, what could this be from? i out 3 quarts of oil in there and it doesnt do it half as bad as earlier today, i think that ruber boot riped and the fluid came out

Okay to answer your question, you have a bad throw out bearing causing the noise, and a bad pressure plate causing the inability to shift gears.

As far as adding oil, that little rubber boot (I'm assuming you're talking about the rubber boot that wraps around the clutch fork on the side of the tranny), IS A DUST BOOT. I hope for the love of God you didn't pull that boot off and pour oil in the hole. To properly check the oil in the tranny you need to pull the fill plug on the left side of the transmission and feel for the fluid level. Basically you should just add fluid until it starts to seep out of the fill hole. that means its full. And if you put 3 quarts of oil in your tranny you put too much, especially if you didn't drain the old oil out first. the FSM calls for about 2 1/2 quarts.

A little piece of advice, get an FSM and read it! If that is just too much work for you then you need to get a qualified tech to work on your car, or you're just going to end up breaking it further.

no i meant the one at the top where the shifter is, i was told its ok to add in there, there was no fluid in it atall and it started raining so i had to drop it and put it in that way. so does tha tmean i gota pull the tranny? roughly how much would that cost? parts wise. i dont wana do it and replace 2 things when it mayt really need 5

You need to do a clutch job. Most shops will charge you around 600 parts and labor. Parts wise you just to buy a clutch kit, anywhere from 100 bucks to 300 for a good kit. If you do it yourself you will need to have a pretty good set of tools, some jack stands, jack, friends, and alot of patience.

Since I have no friends my tranny jobs are just plain lonely. :(

You can fill your trans this way, but you need to have the check/fill plug (previously mentioned) removed or you'll overfill the trans.

Sounds like you've got a mess on your hands, time to start from scratch, eg.
Clutch job, fluid change, clutch fluid flush.

A rookie in a garage clutch job will probably take like 12 hours.

The tough spots will be: removing the top bellhousing bolts, pulling the trans off the back of the motor, breaking flywheel bolts, shooting the input shaft back into the new pilot bushing (putting the trans back onto the motor).

Tips:

Removing the pilot bushing: fill the cavity in the back of the crankshaft, where the bushing sits completely w/grease, use a socket that will fit the hole in the bushing (filled w/grease) and an extension and a hammer to force the bushing out hydraulically.

Drain the trans prior to the start of the job (duh); it'll make the trans lighter and easier to manage when removing and installing. Also it won't drain fluid all over once the driveshaft is removed.

Make sure the tranny vent and crank position sensor are removed first and last, they can get messed up if they are on the trans when you're removing or installing it.

Don't disregard the flywheel. Make arraignments with a local machine shop before you start, know how long they'll take, their hours, cost, etc. It would be a waste to put a fresh clutch on a beatup flywheel.

It's doable to one-man this job (but a big PITA), the KA trans isnt ridiculously heavy, but be careful, dropping trannys on one's chest isn't so bad, dropping on one's face can be dangerous. If you can do push-ups you drop your own trans, but it will test you...

thanks for the replies, im gona get the car towed back tomorow morning and pull the tranny and see whats up, im gona get a new clutch probly. i know whats needed now, its more of a money problem then a technical one (so far) i hope its just the pressure plate or somthing and just needs a new clutch

same problem happened when my pilot bearing was shattered inside the crankshaft, took a weekend to pull tranny out, put a new pilot bearing in and voila noises gone.

the pilot bearing is the round thing on the end of the crankshaft the flywheel bolts to correct? so id just pull that stuff off, replace, reinstall? where ddi you get a new one?

The pilot BUSHING can be found pretty much anywhere that stocks auto parts.

And if you think that replacing the pilot bushing is a simple 1 hour job you've got another thing coming. You might want to make sure you have someone with car knowledge that exceeds yours be present when you do this job.

I get the distinct feeling we're going to be hearing from you after this weekend...... "I can't get the pliot bushing out....I can't get the tranny back on.....The car won't go into gear now....." :(

lol, my uncle is a mech so he will be helping me i fi need him to, which i will, im having a hard time getting the tranny out because i gota do it in the driveway (gravel) and i gota work so its going slow, hopfully be done tomorow, if anything serious ill post up pics

well i pulled the transmission out and amazingly the bearings are fine. but, the piece the bearing connects to, and the frotn cover of the trany is bad and needs replaced, also need a clutch disk.
