I can get it at work but I don't know the quality. I know AMS is good http://www.amsperformance.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=826 but I read somewhere that after market timing sets have issues, like the guides breaking and the chain skipping teeth. So should I pay out the ass at Nissan or get the AMS or the Advanced brand?? I don't know what to do? Help!

if you dont want the guides to break just remove them...as far as finding a timing set i know ams and 240sxmotoring(may not be in website, you have to call them) have them in stock and aftermarket...me personal i would just get the oem set so you dont have the risk of issues like you said

I'm not talking about the top guide. The tensioners is what I should of said. Who has bought what guide where and how much, plus how many miles have you put on it?

Its not that bad considering it comes with a water pump, valve cover gasket plug tube seals, thermostat, cam sprockets, and hoses. But I don't need that stuff because I plan on getting a AMS kit, thermo I can get at work, and I am getting the JWT sprockets.

You can call courtesy and order the parts you need. You dont have to buy the whole kit.

http://www.courtesyparts.com/S13_DOHC-TBKIT.html

Scroll down and just order them individually. upper and lower chain. two guides, two tensions, seals and bolts.

Exactly. It is AMS but I have heard bad thing about aftermarket timing sets. They said get the straight up true OEM from Nissan.

I dont think I'm going to skimp on timing. It may cost a hundred now but it could end up costing hundreds.

try thousands.

On what? Thousands? Dude that is a built motor from the ground up, "thousands" what the hell are you smoking. Even if the valves got bent and the whole head was screwed try a hundred or two for another head. Then say the pistons got fucked up from valve contact 500(forged) and you spit a rod out some how at the same time. So lets see. I could get right now a block/head assembly right now for 400 from a local junkyard. New piston set 500, rods 400, main&rod bearing 110, ARP head studs 110, Timing set 330-450(depending on where you get it) full gasket set 200+/-. 400+500+110+110+450+200=1770. This is as if your WHOLE ENTIRE ENGINE was non salvagable. This isn't the price for a running motor this is a motor capable of huge numbers. :fawk2: . No more input from you. I just need to see if someone has has any complications or a good experience from a non legit OEM timing set.

i think AMS pieces together whats required for a timing chain job with the updated parts with Genuine OEM Nissan parts and sells it as a kit for simplicity on their site since most people who buy their rebuild kits want to replace the timing chain and water pump as well.

i have not priced together individual pieces to see if it's cheaper to buy from some other site like westco justin, courtesy parts, etc., but the AMS kit should have everything needed. although you can possibly look at different sites, add up the prices, and find the savings? probably wont be much? $20 or so?

Yeah the advanced rebuild kit that AMS offers is a great deal. Even their turbo kits are a steal.

The ebay timing chain kits are cheap. The chain that comes with the kit is decent enough, better than the old timing chain, but the lower guides for the bottom are really cheaply machined. It had strange burr marks on the bolt hole for the tension guide and the other lower guide was straight plastic. The nissan one is half metal/plastic. If all you want are the chains and tensioners, the kit is fine, but I would buy new lower guides since it doesn't even compare to quality to the OEM.

Take it for what it's worth, but you can piece together the kit.

Lower Timing chain
Tensioner
Tensioned Guide
Lower Chain Guide (straight guide w/2 new updated 12 mm bolts instead of the hex bolts)

Upper timing chain
Tensioner

I figured why put forged pistons and calico bearings etc, etc and by crap timing components.

well sometimes there's oem standard stuff out there, but alot of you guys only heard this and that. I was providing some info I found out from buying an ebay kit. The only parts i ended up purchasing again was the lower timing guides. I used the new chains and tensioners. Sprockets don't really need replacing, but the kit did come with front main seal and the o-ring oil seal which was nice.

How much are you boosting, rev limit, and how long/miles has it lasted?

Probably in a week, I'll find out. The point is I wouldn't run some of the parts I came across, but I found the chain and tensioners would work fine.

Oh ok gotcha. Let me know how it turns out. I'll see if it would be cheaper to get ebay chain and tensioners and get the rest from Nissan.

I would trust AMS timing chain kits after all there designed to take additional torque on boosted KA's.... I don't think you would ever go wrong with the kit.

I just really can't see myself trusting an ebay timing chain though. I'll prolly just stick with the AMS kit.

As an FYI, the dealer ship near my house (Boston) does the complete KA timing chain replace for 350 bucks. I was like whoa when I saw that, not sure if other dealerships have the same price though.

I just bought the timing chain kit at West Covina Nissan. It comes out cheaper than piecing it together on Courtesyparts.

It was something like $247 (W.C.N) > $330 (Cparts).
