View Full Version : Anyone mountain bike?

I just started. Its looking like it will be another great hobby. I have an old Trek 7000 hardtail, but I want to add the front shocks. Today when we were going down the hills, my arms were vibrating so bad, I think they should help out.

We were out on different trails for about 4 hours riding a bunch of trail. We started on one that was all uphill, we ended up turning around because it was torture on my legs. We found another trail with some hills that werent as bad. I still had to walk up some :keke: but Im addicted.

The bike is about 13-15 years old and it really needs a tune up. I was checking up how to do it online, but it looks like it takes some time and skill. Anyone in the bay area want to lend a hand? ahaha. I was thinking just to take it to a shop. I mainly have problems shifting the front gears, and shifting the back lags. When I shift the front I have to push the lever in so far before it goes up.

just replace the front de-railer...(thats what we call them over here) The thing that changes the front sprocket gears...But I mountain bike every once in a while

just replace the front and rear deraileur cables and go from there.
that bike in its prime went for about a grand.
front suspension, and a few newer components and that will be great a ride, providing all the welds are good.
+1 for biking!!

i used to be a lot more into it, but in recent years i haven't ridden much. i've got a trek 850 hardtail, a generic y-frame with some decent hardware, and i'm in the middle of converting my old Specialized Hard Rock into a single speed road bike... which i'm planning to start riding every day just for exercise.

http://photos-762.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sctm/v71/186/17/15912762/n15912762_34714147_353.jpg

i've got new brake levers, tensioner, all the spacers and crap to convert the rear cassette... all i need are my new handlebars and brakes and it should be ready to go :D

it's a dark blue-purple, it's kinda fruity actually >.<

but, sadly, not for sale. if you want a good bike deal, pick one up on craigslist in your area though :d

When I looked up how to do stuff for the bikes it seems simple, but I dont want to sit there for an hour adjusting the derailers. If I did buy new ones, can I just get anything or do they have to be specific? Same question for the forks. Can you make a recommendation for some derailers and CHEAP front forks, Im still a beginner so I dont need anything crazy.

Its really surprising that this bike went for that much. We had it forever. I used to have a specialized also, but someone stole it. That one was steel and quite a bit heavier.

Not_Nissan
07-01-2007, 11:06 PM
speacialized are typically heavy...lol...as far as the "ders" i honestly coulnt tell you...For the fork...Make sure you get one that accomedates both your wheel size and your tree length

go with low end shimano equipment, it all works fine and costs nothing.

yep, lots of cheap big box bikes have shimano shifters and brakes. and they work great for a recreational biker. like in all sports, hobbies, whatever, the higher end stuff really isn't needed for 99% of the users. people just buy it to say they have it, or because they've been lead to believe they need it. most people don't need fucking disc brakes on their weekend bicycle, but look around. they're standard issue on even lower midlevel bikes now, like the current Hard Rock.

....of course, once they're super cheap, i'll wind up with a set on one of my bikes...

You assholes, as if my car wasn't about to take so much of my money, now I am wanting to take my bike apart and throw parts at it too.

... fuckers

HalveBlue
07-01-2007, 11:39 PM
I ride my bike everyday and take it for 6-7 milers or more occassionaly, including up in the Colorado mountains. I fucking love it!

The first week or two suck, mostly because your body isn't used to it. But I start riding I could go on forever.

I have a Trek 4300 that cost me just under $400 with a couple of accessories. Not the most expensive or lightest bikes in the world but it's perfect for my needs.

My suggestion is to take your bike to a local bike shop and see if they can do a tune up for you. Usually really old bikes will need their chain replaced and have their brake and gear cable tightened. Also, you need to make sure all the moving parts are properly lubricated.

Actual bicycle maintenance isn't that hard and doesn't require a lot of tools. If you've worked on cars you can work on bicycles. But a shop can at least tell you what to pay attention to if you've never worked on a bike before.

I don't know if you're planning on getting a new bike or just upgrading the one you have, but I suggest you with a front fork that has some decent shocks. Don't worry about rear suspension unless you do a lot of down-hill riding. In most cases it's actually detrimental.

Also, make sure your bike is sized correctly. Nothing will kill your body quicker than riding for prolonged periods on an improperly fitted bike. If you go to a bike shop (go with a specialty shop and not a place like Wal Mart or Target) I'm sure they'll help you out.

BustedS13
07-01-2007, 11:44 PM
yeah, if you're wanting to do some trail riding, then a rock shox front fork wouldn't hurt... if you stick to the pavement or a gravel trail or anything remotely smooth though, just keep it rigid, no need for extra moving parts.

BustedS13

here, for your enjoyment and to ease my own boredom as i wait for this nyquil to kick in, here's a breakdown of my singlespeed conversion:

Specialized Hard Rock Sport - dug it out of my parents' garage, had it since i was like 12, so "free"

two cans Krylon satin black - 8.00

http://www.performancebike.com/product_images/500/50-6550-NCL-TOP.jpg
Forte single speed conversion kit (spacers, tensioner, cogs, cassette lock) - 20.00

http://www.performancebike.com/product_images/500/50-6636-NCL-ANGLE.jpg
Forte road bars - 30.00

bar tape (oldschool marble cork) - 5.00

cheapo ebay road brake levers - 20.00 shipped

Shimano Deore v-brakes - 20.00 shipped

misc shipping - like 10.00

so, so far i've dropped under 100 bucks to build a singlespeed road bike on a mountain bike frame. i'm gonna need some new pedals, probably a taller stem, a roll of hockey tape to keep the chain from ripping up my paint, and i'm sure a million other little things, but all in all the cost is still pretty low for a specifically built bike like this.

if you're just getting into biking, don't waste your money and go all out on a brand new top of the line bike, as much as you might want to. surf craigslist, go to garage sales, get a decent frame and build it up with cheap quality parts, and see if you like it.

adjusting deraileurs is a pain in the ass, i just have my local shop do mine when they get out of whack. i hate when i'm standing and pedaling in top gear and they slip a gear, which tends to happen a lot when i try to tune them. any shop should only charge like 10 bucks or so at the most to get them lined up right. you could get your whole bike looked over and cleaned up for under 50.

as far as cheap front shocks... rock shox makes some low-end ones, check ebay.

yea ebay actually isnt bad...Id pick up some used ones...or just re-search and find some low-grade new ones....

And i understand about slipping of the der's...Espcially with after market pedals that are supposed to grip...Then your foot slips and the grip your bone and make you limp for 2 weeks...

yeah, i love when i'm pedaling hard and the chain slips, and i wind up with huge gashes down my calf from the pedals. but... that's the price i pay for using BMX pedals on my mountain bike, i guess >.<

Not_Nissan
07-02-2007, 12:31 AM
i forgot what kind of pedals i use...they're for off road racing...but i usally slip off the back of the pedal and crush my shin....and boy boy boy...it HURTS! Well there was this one time i went off roading on my mountain bike...came up to this hill...Went down it (probably about a 15% grade slope) Hit a rut from 4x4 trails...cracked my balls....so i just fell over and layed in the mud for 30 minutes (not joking) and i still felt bad a day later

95Blue240sx
07-02-2007, 12:37 AM

I used to get cut up with my bmx when I peddle hard and it slips.

Oh yea...thats why mountain bikes are better for up hills...although sometimes its a downfall because people think they have to shift to the highest gear (or lowest...how ever you look at it...but lets just say 1st gear) and it actually hurts them...they use more energy making more rotations with the crank and having to go faster

Hey guys, I am glad you made a thread about this. I have been riding free-style for a few years now. I started out on BMX, but after seeing a couple of my friends hit some gaps on mountain bikes I had to switch. I now ride a Specialized Big-Hit Comp. It's a crazy full-suspension down-hill bike. i also forgot how fucking disgusting working on bikes can be, especially when you're focused on the gearing. i don't get this dirty working on cars. got the singlespeed done, not sure if these are the gears i'll want, not sure if it's perfectly aligned or if i took out enough links or whatever, i'm sure it'll need some adjustment, but it's on. and for 20 bucks, this forte conversion can't be beat...

pics.

a singlespeed crankset wouldn't hurt, as this one's pretty beat, but we'll see how much i enjoy it before i throw more money at it. i may build myself a multi geared road bike yet, we'll see.

still to do:
exchange bars, wrap bars
replace tube in front tire
mount brakes, cut lines, mount levers
wrap rear fork in hockey tape
fine tune
beat the shit out of it

nice jonnie. you still have the 850? Ive been wanting the old cannondales with the huge tubing.

Your gears are greazy busted! maybe too much oil/lube??

it's a combo of spraying wd-40 on the gears after every wet ride for like 8 years, and letting my ex girlfriend borrow this bike for two years back in college. it's pretty dirty.

I've got a mountain bike, but no mountains. :( It's a Trek 4300 or 4400 I bought last year. So much nicer than the cheapo bike I had before. My old bike had front and rear suspension, but I didn't like the way the rear suspension felt, the bike felt loose and sloppy to me, so my new one is a hard tail. I really need to get out and ride more.

Nice bike bro, I built a custom Azonic DS1 a while back, had like 2 grand in it, set up like yours. Had a 26"/24" stagger, hit dirt jumps like a dream. I used to be pretty competitive racing Dual Slalom(Mountaincross when Slalom got killed off).

Great fun, wish I still had mine, sold it to fund my other money pit, car. I'd like to get another bike sometime though. Shit I live on Mt. Tam, I'm obligated to go buy another bike, haha...

I recently purchased an Ironhorse Maverick. It was only $200, but its gets the job done for me. I figured it was a better buy than the Schwins at Target.

I wanted something more expensive of course, But once I got it home I was 100% satisfied. The only upgrade I may do is change the grip shift to the trigger shifter (or whatever you call it).

if you just need levers, depends on how nice you want. retail, maybe 80 bucks a set for some decent shimanos... ebay, maybe 40.

yeah, if you're just replacing your grip shifters, all you need are those... if they don't come with new cables, you can pick up a new cable set for 10 bucks on performancebike. might not need them, but it doesn't hurt to replace them...

Im about to get some new tires, are there different sizes or widths that wouldnt fit my rim? The one I have on there now it all old and cracking and the tube has a few holes. Its a 26x1.95. Would it be a problem just to buy a 26x2.1?

Well I just got another bike. Its maybe 12 years old! LOL it was free from my cousin. Another Trek, a 930. Hard tail, aluminum chassis, rock shox up front. Only thing is it doesnt shift the rear derailluer :duh: I couldnt really do much because it wont shift anywhere. Its suck on the very last or second to last gear.

Another thing is the front breaks squeal LOUD! I dunno whats up with it.

Any advice on where to go with these two issues? Thanks!

blackflag_Rms13
08-03-2007, 03:09 AM
Well the front brakes are probably squealing because the wheel isn't true. If you're asking about it, it's probably safe to assume you won't try and fix it yourself, but if you decide to, look online for a guide, it's really quite easy, just adjusting spoke nipples.

The deraileur is much the same I'm assuming. Barring it being broken, you probably just need to play around with the adjustment screws to get it to shift. I guess what would be even more basic is you just need to replace the cables. I guess there's nothing else i can tell you without more information. Bike shops can be a bitch about labor, but if the problems are as simple as I assumed they were it shouldn't be too much if you decide to take it in. Anywho good luck with that...

95Blue240sx
08-03-2007, 10:27 AM
What do you mean the wheel isnt true? Do you mean its warped or just dirty?

The only thing I can think of when using "true" is when you true a commutator on an electric motor.

I've adjust the der's on my other bike and got it to shift, but the guides say its suppose to be in a certain spot before adjusting it. Another thing I noticed, is some of the cables are rusted. So Im not sure if I want to spend the money to get them replaced just yet.

blackflag_Rms13
08-03-2007, 11:56 AM
Yes, warped. Flip your bike upside down and spin the front wheel. If it's wobbling then it's not true. Which could be causing it to rub up on the brake pads, making the squeal.

It squeals when I apply the brakes, only on the front. Not when it is free spinning.

Another thing about it not shifting is the actual shifter has zero tension.

blackflag_Rms13
08-04-2007, 12:03 AM
Well then you just need new pads, thats it. And yeah no tension is pretty self explanatory...

95Blue240sx

Im still not sure about the shifting. Is it just the shifter that isnt working? Or would it be the derailuer?

either find a 1 inch threaded suspension fork, or get a 1 inch threadless stem fork and headset.

Can you or anyone else recommend me a new stem and headset? If threadless is the new standard, I wouldnt mind getting them since there are probably more on the market.

Im also planning to get new rockshock forks when I find a good deal on them.

make sure your break pads have a slight toe out so you wont have that squealing. rock shox dart 2 is a good entry fork w/ lockout so you wont be bobbing around when climbing. bought the bike mainly for fitness, im now down 203 from 220 and what to break 200's soon.

Nice Balmo. I almost got the Hardrock, it was about 350ish and the 6000 was 640ish, but I got a 10% discount so I just coughed up the extra dough. I have the Dart 1 on mine, no lockout =\. Couple of my friends that I ride with have the Rockhopper. After riding their bikes, I had to upgrade. The 6000 fit me better and felt better. Its starting to get expensive, just like cars :(

Yeah, the only thing I want to do is change everything over to carbon fiber just because Im a ricer LOL and to lighten up the ride, but with the prices of parts, it wont be anytime soon.

I did buy a Diamond Back Comp Pro from Sport Authority before getting this Trek and ended up returning it because they really were incompetent with bikes. It wasnt shifting properly and there was a huge chip in the paint, but it was a 100 less with almost the same components.

In the end Im so much happier buying from a REAL bike shop that can support what they sell.

Sun Bikes is #1!

+1 for local bike shops.

Carbon is great for trail riding. Always nice to lighten up the bike. Just be sure to get quality carbon peices. I've seen alot of carbon parts (bars, stems, and posts) fail under hard downhill riding.

I have a 2004 Giant VT 2, 2004 GIANT AC 2, 2002 GIANT AC AIR, and 2003 GIANT IGUANA. All bikes have been upgraded. Hmm, maybe I should sell one of my bikes...

I bought some shimano clipless pedals and fell in my driveway the first time out  but Im getting used to it. Pretty scary though.

Im looking for a decent wheelset if anyone can recommend me one. Maybe $300 max. I was looking at getting the Mavic Crossride. I have seen some decent reviews on them.
